With shulders shivering, her tears cannt help streaming dwn her face.
A mther is a persn wh, seeing there are nly fur pieces f pie fr five peple, prmptly annunces she never did care fr pie.
—Tenneva Jrdan
I knew I was nt suppsed t be quite s excited. I was t ld fr that. At age eleven, as the ldest and my mm’s “grwn-up” girl, I had t keep my cl. I was in middle schl after all. But every chance I gt, when I was alne, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the cntents within. I had examined each gift s ften that I culd tell which present went t which persn withut even lking at the tags.
It had been a tugh year fr my family. Whenever my mm lked ver at the tree and scattered(撒) presents, she wuld sigh and warn us, “There wn’t be as much fr Christmas this year. Try nt t be disappinted.” Christmas had traditinally been a time fr my parents t spil us. In years past, the presents wuld pile up and spill ut frm under the tree, taking ver the living rm. I had heard the phrase “giving is better than receiving,” but thught that whever had said that must have been ut f their mind. Getting presents was the whle pint! It was the reasn I culdn’t get t sleep n Christmas Eve.
On Christmas mrning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad tld us everything was ready. We rushed int the living rm and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts t wait and watch while ther family members pened their presents, but as the time passed we lst ur self-cntrl.
“Here’s anther ne fr yu,” said Mm as she handed me a package. I lked at it, cnfused. Having spent s much time examining the presents befre Christmas, I recgnized this ne. But it had nt been mine. It was my mm’s. A new label had been put n it, with my name written in my mther’s handwriting.
“Mm, I can’t...”

I was stpped by my mther’s eager, jyful lk. “Let’s see what it is, hney. Hurry and pen it.” It was a blw dryer. Thugh this may seem but a simple gift, t me it was s much mre. Being an eleven-year-ld girl, I was stunned. In my wrld, where receiving largely utweighed giving, my mm’s act f selflessness was incmprehensible. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thught in disbelief abut hw much my mm must lve me t give up her Christmas s I culd have a few mre presents.
I have always remembered that Christmas fndly. It had such an impact n me. As an adult with children in my life whm I adre, I can nw understand my mm’s actins. I see, actually, she was nt “giving up her Christmas” as I had thught, but was finding an even greater jy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mm’s simple act meant the wrld t me. Whenever I lk back n my mm’s giving, I will chse t give in my life.
Being an eleven-year-ld girl, I was stunned. As an adult with children in my life whm I adre, I can nw understand my mm’s actins. Whenever I lk back n my mm’s giving, I will chse t give in my life.
