Suddenly, Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped.,with复合结构We stumbled hme, with my clthes dripping water.
At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smke r flames shting frm the windws f his neighbrs’ hme. He and his wife had just parked arund the crner frm their wn huse in Allentwn, Pennsylvania, when they gt a call frm ne f his daughters: “The huse next dr is n fire!” He went t investigate. That’s when he saw a wman crying desperately n their prch.
“The baby’s in there!” the wman cried. Thugh the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-ld Tiara Rberts, the wman’s granddaughter.
Entering the burning huse was like “running int a bucket f black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smke caused him t stumble blindly arund, burned his eyes, and made it impssible t breathe. The cnditins wuld have been dangerus t anyne, but fr Surrell, wh has chrnic bstructive pulmnary disease(慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smke-filled huse, he retreated utside t catch his breath. Surrell knew he culdn’t hld his breath fr lng. Taking a deep breath, he went in a secnd time. The darkness was verwhelming. Yet because the huse had a similar layut(布局) t his, he fund the stairs and made it t the secnd flr. He turned t the right and was met by intense heat. He was already ut f breath.
His thrat and lungs burned as if he’d breathed in fire instead f the smke and st in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he culd hear was the crackling and ppping f burning wd. Then a sft but distinct man(呻吟声) emerged. Still unable t see, Surrell fell t his knees n the ht wd flr. He crawled tward the sund, feeling arund fr any sign f the girl.
Finally, he tuched smething—a she, then an ankle. ____________________________________________________

He felt the heat f the flames n his cheeks. Turning, he fught thrugh the smke and ran blindly int the blackness. Surrell put Tiara dwn n the prch. He started CPR—the first time he’d ever dne s. Surrell wke up in the hspital a cuple f days later. He suffered severe burns t his windpipe and the upper prtin f his lungs. He spent ver a week in the hspital. The fire wrsened Surrell’s pulmnary cnditin, and he feels the effects even tw years later. As a result, he takes extra medicatin that helps pen his airways. “It’s a small price t pay,” he says. “I’d d it again in a heartbeat. Wuldn’t give it a secnd thught.”
根据文章最后一段最后一句提到“He crawled tward the sund, feeling arund fr any sign f the girl.”
如:hugged her int his arms,tk a breath, secnd thught等高级词汇;现在分词短语作状语:Turning, he fught thrugh the smke and ran blindly int the blackness. As a result, he takes extra medicatin that helps pen his airways.
