Scientists have discvered a new technique by which light can be bent arund crners, inspired by the way cluds scatter (散射) sunlight. This type f light-bending culd lead t imprvements in many fields such as medical imaging and electrnics cling.
Daniele Facci at the University f Glasgw, UK, and his wrkmates say they are shcked that this type f light scattering wasn’t nticed befre. It wrks n the same basis as cluds, snw and ther white materials that absrb light: nce phtns (光子) hit the surface f such a material, they are scattered in all directins.
“The light ges arund and tries t get in,” says Facci. “And eventually what happens is that it just gets reflected back because it can’t get in. This is this scattering.”
T cpy this prcess, the team 3D printed bjects frm a special white material while
leaving thin tunnels (通路) within. When light is shne at the material, it travels int these tunnels and is scattered —just as light is n snw r cluds. Hwever, instead f scattering randmly in every directin, the phtns are directed t return t the tunnels by the material. The team put this t use, creating a range f bjects that cntrl light in an rganised way. The researchers say their material imprves light transmissin much better than thse withut the same tunnels, and als
allws it t be directed arund curves.
This methd f light-bending culd make use f existing tunnels f sme special materials t prvide new ways t carry ut medical imaging. Facci says the exact same way als wrks t direct heat and neutrns, and culd therefre als find use in a range f engineering applicatins such as cling systems.

A .Hw light travels. B .Hw cluds scatter sunlight.
C .The relevant studies. D .The features f white materials.
8 .Accrding t paragraph 4, what is the key t cntrlling the light scattering?
