This unit fcuses n the theme f inventins, aiming t explre the rigin f innvative ideas, the qualities f inventrs, and the driving frces behind inventins. In the "Understanding ideas" sectin, students will read abut the stry f Eastn LaChappelle's inventin f an artificial arm. Eastn, a 14 - year - ld student, was inspired by Jenny, a girl brn withut an arm whse artificial arm was expensive and nt suitable fr children's grwth. Thrugh cntinuus effrts, frm building with plastic blcks and fishing line t using a 3 - D printer, Eastn finally invented a lightweight and lw - cst artificial arm at the age f 23 and made his design freely available nline. This stry nt nly shws the prcess f inventin but als cnveys the spirit f perseverance and the value f helping thers.

3 Grammar: Infinitive and Gerund as Objects
Sme verbs are usually fllwed by the infinitive, such as "decide", "want", "hpe", "wish", etc. Fr example, "He decided t pst his design nline."
Sme verbs are ften fllwed by the gerund, such as "enjy", "finish", "practice", "mind", etc. Fr example, "He enjyed fixing prblems ne after anther."

1 Lead - in (5 minutes)
Shw students sme pictures f great inventins, such as the Suth - Pinting Spn, the wheel, the cmputer and the mbile phne. Ask them: "What are these inventins? Hw have they changed ur lives?" Encurage students t share their ideas.
Then, shw a picture f a rbtic arm and ask: "D yu knw hw this inventin came abut? Let's read a stry abut it."
2 Pre - reading (5 minutes)
Present a wrd clud with wrds related t the text, such as "Eastn", "Jenny", "artificial arm", "3 - D printer", etc. Let students predict what the passage is abut.
Teach new wrds and phrases briefly. Use pictures r simple examples t help students understand the meanings f "rbtic arm", "artificial arm", "3 - D printer", etc.
3 While - reading (20 minutes)
Skimming: Let students read the text quickly and answer the questin: "What is the main idea f the passage?" Guide students t find that the passage is mainly abut Eastn LaChappelle's inventin f an artificial arm t help peple like Jenny.
Scanning: Ask students t read the text carefully and answer sme detailed questins:
"Why did Eastn decide t invent an artificial arm?" (Because he met Jenny, whse artificial arm was expensive and nt suitable fr children's grwth.)
"What did Eastn use t build the first rbtic arm?" (Plastic blcks and fishing line.)
"When did Eastn get a 3 - D printer?" (Fr his 16th birthday.)
"Hw much did Eastn's final design weigh and cst?" (It weighed 0.5 kilgrams and cst arund $500.)
Intensive reading: Analyze the text structure with students. The text fllws a time - line rder: 14 - year - ld Eastn met Jenny at a science fair (beginning), then he started t invent and imprve the artificial arm (\(16^{th}\) birthday - gt a 3 - D printer, kept wrking), and finally succeeded at age 23 (ending). Als, analyze sme imprtant sentences, especially thse with the infinitive and gerund as bjects, and explain their usage.
4 Pst - reading (10 minutes)
Grup wrk: Divide students int grups. Let them discuss the fllwing questins:
"What qualities did Eastn have? Hw did these qualities help him succeed?"
"Can yu think f ther inventins that have changed peple's lives? Hw did they d it?"
"If yu were an inventr, what kind f inventin wuld yu like t make t help peple?"
Each grup selects a representative t share their discussin results with the class.
5 Language Pints Summary (5 minutes)
Review the key wrds, phrases and grammar pints in the text. Write sme sentences n the blackbard with blanks, and ask students t fill in the blanks with the crrect frms f the wrds r the apprpriate verb frms (infinitive r gerund). Fr example:

教学反思
In this class, thrugh varius teaching methds such as picture - leading, predictin, reading fr different purpses and grup discussin, students' interest in learning has been effectively stimulated. Mst students can actively participate in classrm activities and shw a certain understanding f the text cntent and language knwledge.
Hwever, there are still sme prblems. Fr example, when discussing in grups, sme students are nt very active, and their English expressins are nt fluent enugh. In future teaching, mre time can be allcated fr grup cmmunicatin, and sme sentence patterns and expressins can be prvided in advance t help students express better.
In terms f grammar teaching, althugh students have a certain understanding f the usage f the infinitive and gerund as bjects, mre practice is needed in the fllw - up classes t strengthen their memry and crrect applicatin. Teachers can design mre practical exercises, such as writing shrt passages r making up dialgues, t let students use grammar knwledge in real - life situatins.教学目标
