Night after night, lng after rehearsals ended, he culd be fund in the dimly lit practice rm, diligently studying each instrumental part and experimenting with different cnducting techniques using nly a pencil as his batn.
The turning pint f Liang’s career came unexpectedly during the rchestra’s 2003 Eurpean tur. Minutes befre a scheduled perfrmance f Beethven’s Fifth Symphny in Vienna’s distinguished Knzerthaus, the principal cnductr fell ill with severe vertig (眩晕). As panic spread backstage, Liang calmly stepped frward. What fllwed was nthing shrt f mysterius — his ecnmical, almst thughtful gestures drew frm the rchestra a perfrmance f such depth and clarity that many in the audience wept penly. The nrmally reserved Viennese critics credited it as “a revelatin f Beethven’s true intentin,” and the twenty-minute standing applause brke the hall’s recrds. Yet when jurnalists rushed t interview this unknwn substitute, Liang had already slipped away, later insisting the credit belnged entirely t the musicians.
In the years that fllwed, he established the “Listening First” initiative, traveling t remte prvinces t teach underprivileged students his philsphy that “the mst imprtant music happens in the silence between ntes.” Liang transfrmed an abandned Beijing textile factry int a perfect training center, where he develped innvative techniques emphasizing cllective unity ver individual mastery.

Bridging the gap between prmise and practice, Jann Spiess, an assciate prfessr at Stanfrd Graduate Schl f Business, is explring hw algrithms (算法) can be designed t mst effectively supprt — rather than replace — human decisin-makers.
“We dn’t have much wrk — yet — that takes design f the human-AI interface really seriusly,” says Spiess. “Our debate abut AI and the capabilities f AI is really misplaced, because it’s all abut ‘Is AI better than the human?’”, he cntinues. “I think instead we shuld be asking, ‘What are the cmplementary (互补的) uses f AI?’”
If users rely t heavily n an algrithm, they may ignre relevant cntext r infrmatin the algrithm may nt knw. On the ther hand, if users view recmmendatins as verly cmplex r irrelevant, they may dismiss them altgether, frging any advantages algrithmic recmmendatins may prvide.
“Therefre, the best algrithm shuld take int accunt hw a human will interact with the infrmatin it prvides,” Spiess says. In a recent paper, Spiess utlines a cnceptual (概念的) design framewrk mdeling hw humans respnd t algrithmic recmmendatins — and presents a different apprach t building AI tls. This apprach is knwn as cmplementarity.
The researchers tested different recmmendatin strategies in an experiment, where participants made 25 hiring decisins with different levels f algrithmic assistance. Peple using a cmplementary algrithm — which ffered selective recmmendatins in cases where a human was likely t be uncertain r incrrect — made the mst accurate decisins, utperfrming thse using a purely predictive algrithm and thse using n algrithmic supprt.
It’s an encuraging result. “There’s much prmise arund AI imprving decisins,” says Spiess, wh’s particularly interested in applicatins that affect hw services are allcated (分配) in resurce-limited envirnments, such as placing teachers in underserved schl districts with limited budgets. “If yu culd use algrithms t imprve resurce allcatin, there are many high-value use cases in areas where we dn’t have ready r clear slutins,” he says.
28. What is the main issue with current AI debates accrding t Spiess?
A. Ignring the ptential f AI.B. Overemphasis n AI’s superirity.
C. Misunderstanding AI’s purpse.D. Lack f fcus n AI’s efficiency.
29. What des the underlined wrd “frging” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Abandning. B. Stressing. C. Admitting. D. Assessing.
30. What des Spiess think is the key t effective AI design?
A. Enhancing algrithm cmplexity. B. Reducing human dependence n AI.
C. Cnsidering human-AI interactin.D. Imprving AI’s independent capability.
31. What des the experiment n hiring decisins shw?
A. Predictive algrithms were the mst helpful.B. Human judgment alne was the mst accurate.
C. N algrithmic supprt was cmpletely the best.D. Cmplementary algrithms were highly effective.

(社会热点)What makes a genius? We might say it’s a cmbinatin f extrardinary talent and drive, ften accmpanied by madness. Thmas Edisn, Albert Einstein and Pabl Picass all made pineering breakthrughs in their respective fields while living legendary lives. Helen Lewis’s The Genius Myth, hwever, argues that sciety wrngly admires figures like them. She claims the “genius” label excuses immral behaviurs — alchlism, abandnment, drug abuse. But des her criticism really make sense?
In her bk, Lewis links the idea f innate (天生的) genius t the harmful histry f intelligence testing. This field, started by figures like Francis Galtn, is cnnected t racism. She criticises his later fllwing thinkers, like Hans Eysenck and William Shckley, fr their ignring scial factrs affecting success fr supprting racial rankings. Fr them, she suggests, “genius” becmes a cver n extreme r even evil thinking, a characteristic increasingly seen in sme nline fans.
Her slutin? Stp admiring individuals. Call specific wrks genius, nt peple. But I questin whether the public really believes this “genius myth” as desperately as Lewis insists. Her sweeping statements abut “ur” blind lve fr “trublesme individuals” feel frced — like she’s prjecting her wn views n everyne else.
The bk has significant drawbacks. Lewis essentially invents a term “weak mdel f genius” t dress up a lng-knwn bvius pint — imperfect peple can be talented — as new insight. It feels like she’s selling a cure fr a disease she invented. Besides, her attempts at a friendly, TED-Talk-inspired style feel awkward rather than genuine. The heavy use f italics (斜体字) makes the writing feel struggled, as if she is trying t hard t cnvince bth readers and herself.
Mre trubling is the disrespectful attitude twards cmplex art that surfaces in Lewis’s writing. Her rude view n Jyce’s literature (“what-if nvels, but harder t read”), her dislike fr pineering films, and her cnfessin f finding the Beatles music “bring” imply that her prblem with “genius” might partly be a persnal hate fr difficult art and its creatrs. Wrse still, these dislikes g withut strng prf. Her unjust claim that Picass is admired because f his imperfectin, nt despite them, reads mre like an angry pinin than reasned argument.
While sme nline fans might admire sme superstars uncritically, true faith in innate genius has been weaker since the 1960s. Lewis jumps n a train that is already slwing.
32.Accrding t The Genius Myth, Helen Lewis wuld mst likely agree that ______.
A.peple like Picass have never made any real achievements
B.sme figures’ evil behavirs are excused by the wrd “genius”
C.many s-called geniuses cannt pass intelligence testing
D.nthing in this wrld is wrth the genius label
33.What des the writer think f the Genius Myth?
A.Its writing style is engaging, sincere and humble.
B.“The weak mdel f genius” is an innvative term.
C.Its criticism f the “genius myth” lacks evidence.
D.It fails t explain the rt cause f peple’s passin fr genius.
34.What des the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?
A.Lewis is criticizing an idea that is n lnger influential.
B.Lewis’s bk is thughtful despite sme drawbacks.
C.Lewis’s criticism is fresh but faces the public’s resistance.
D.Lewis is aware that the public’s faith in genius is declining.
35.What is the main idea f the passage?
A.Sciety’s admiratin fr geniuses is dangerus.
B.Lewis criticism f “the genius myth” is uncnvincing.
C.The public shuld hld a critical view n geniuses.
D.Specific wrks instead f peple shuld be admired.
