Cral reefs (珊瑚礁) are filled with a diverse range f fish. Sme fish are mre beautiful t humans than thers, and many peple firmly believe that beautiful fish deserve mre cnservatin than the uglier species. Is the “firm belief” true? Yu can get the answer frm a new paper published in the jurnal PLOS Bilgy.
Researchers shwed 481 phtgraphs f ray-finned reef fish t 13,000 members f the public. With that data, they then trained a cmputer mdel t generate predictins fr an additinal 4,400 phtgraphs f 2,417 f the mst cmmn reef fish species. They next cmpared the aesthetic rating f each species with ther characteristics, including evlutinary histry, distinctiveness frm ther fish, cnservatin status and imprtance t fisheries.
After analyzing the numbers, researchers fund that the fish humans rated as the mst beautiful tended t be less eclgically and evlutinarily distinct. Prettier fish were als mre likely t be listed as species f “least cncern” n the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature(IUCN) Red List.
On the cntrary, the fish that humans fund t be the least attractive were the mst eclgically and evlutinarily distinct, and they were mre likely t be listed as “threatened” n the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species als tended t be mre imprtant t cmmercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk fr verfishing.
“The less attractive species have the highest eclgical distinctiveness, and thus prvide the highest diversity f eclgical functins,” they write in the paper. “We need t pay mre attentin t the extinctin risk f the less attractive fish species, r that might have verlked effects n reef ecsystem functining.”
“Therefre, t minimize the impact f aesthetic biases, scientists, cnservatin grups and plicymakers may need t change hw they cmmunicate abut wildlife,” the researchers write. “Making peple mre aware f the rles uglier fish play in reef ecsystems culd help them gain mre supprt.”

A culture’s values can be mirrred by its humur. Humur has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thmas Hbbes, wh disliked humur, and thught laughter is nthing else but sudden glry arising frm sudden thught f feeling far better than thers. He thught humur t be a negative quality f human narrw-mindedness.
Hwever, Mrdechai Grdn, PhD f Educatin, insists that humur allws us t view the wrld frm an angle that is amusing rather than serius. I agree with Grdn. Learning t lk at the wrld thrugh humur is imprtant.

Televisin shws like The Daily Shw have becme imprtant parts f American culture. They are affecting the masses by uncnsciusly inputting plitics int their minds. They make plitics fun.
Of curse, plitics is nly ne type f humur. Scial humur helps peple thrugh the twists and turns f the human cnditin. American pp culture prmtes an unhealthy self-image. On the tpic f self-image, Hari Kndablu stands ut. He has a jke abut the ppular musical grup The Pussycat Dlls, describing their hit sng Dn’t Cha as a negative representatin f wmen. He pints ut the bvius ffence in American culture.
A study frm Lyla University Maryland has shwn that humur is ne determining factr in selecting a partner. Amng ther things, peple lk fr an utstanding funny bne in a ptential partner.
Of curse, humur is nt always used fr gd purpses. Humur can be linked t vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has the ptential t unite human beings by allwing us t laugh at urselves, ur failures and ur cnnectins with ne anther.
Thugh life may seem tugh and depressing at times, all I have t d is lk in the mirrr at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) t knw that there is cmedy ut there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware f. With that in mind, remember t laugh with humanity.
32. What did Hbbes think f humur?
A. It resulted in the narrw-mindedness f human beings.
B. It was nly a way t laugh at thers t make neself feel better.
C. It had the pwer t mirrr persnal glry and natinal values.
D. It made peple view the wrld frm anther angle.
33. What is the authr’s attitude twards plitical humur?
A. Wrried.B. Disappinted.C. Curius.D. Appreciative.
34. Hw is the furth paragraph mainly develped?
A. By describing the prcess.B. By giving an example.
C. By cmparing.D. By classifying.
35. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. Chaplin wasn’t aware f being laughed at.
B. The authr feels helpless and sad abut getting lder.
C. Never be the ne wh laughs at ther peple.
D. The authr is determined t face life with a sense f humur.
