“Blw, seven ’clck.”
The clipped vice cmes frm Peter Beamish, the scientist wh wns the bat. 14 heads turn. Our eyes pick ut a whale’s spray beneath the dark grey cliffs.
Beamish slips engines int gear (挡位) and the bat leaps twards the spray. Clse by, a huge, circular dish f water starts t widen. “That’s where she dived. She’ll shw in abut anther tw minutes." Beamish again. He is studying animal cmmunicatin, cncentrating mstly n the whales alng the Newfund-land cast, where he runs a scientific inn. Every trip ut frm there is a cntributin t his research, paid fr by turists like us.
Minutes ticking by, I can hear the blw clse up. It is like the cut-shrt burst f steam frm a huge engine. In the vast sea, lifting, lifting, the whale blacks ut the sky. Her black sides are glistening, curving ut smth and rund, lking like an upturned ship.
“She’s ging t dive. Wait fr the tail.”
The whale eases a little t ur left. Her back arches slwly, the water spilling ff it in curtains. And then ne f the mst memrable sights n Earth: the tail unflds frm the surface in endless slw mtin, the immense flat flukes (鲸的尾叶) puring dwn water and light. Fr a mment it seems t pause; then the tail slwly slides dwn, melting little by little at the base. The sea rushes in, faming, leaving the trail f bubbles behind her disslving t nthing; and she is gne.
“That was Barbara.” Beamish gives every whale a name while it is here. “She’s a 40-ft female, smewhere between seven and 15 years ld. She came here last mnth with the rest f the herd up frm the Caribbean.”
The surfacing f a whale beside a small bat in the sea is an experience that cannt be vershadwed by any televisin dcumentaries. It is nt nly the creature’s size, nr even its pwer and grace. It is the sense it cnveys f all time cntinuing; f living by sme ther clck, less hurried and mre certain than ur wn.

Mm always said, “Chse yur friends wisely.” Nw a study led by a Rutgers-Health prfessr shws she was nt smething: Their traits can affect yu — especially nes that are in their genes.
The genetic make-up f adlescent peers may have lng-term cnsequences fr individual risk f drug and alchl use disrders, depressin and anxiety, the grundbreaking study has fund. “What ur data illustrates is the lng reach f scial genetic effects,” said Jessica E. Salvatre, an assciate prfessr f psychiatry at the Rutgers Rbert Wd Jhnsn Medical Schl and lead authr f the study published in the American Jurnal f Psychiatry.
Sci-genmics — the influence f ne persn’s gentype n the bservable traits f anther — is an emerging field f genmics. Previus research suggested that peers’ genetic make-up might influence health utcmes f their friends. T test this, Salvatre and her clleagues used Swedish natinal data t assess peer scial genetic effects fr several mental disrders.
With an annymus (匿名的) database f mre than 1.5 millin individuals brn in Sweden between 1980 and 1998 t Swedish-brn parents, the first step was t map individuals by lcatin and by schl during their teenage years. The researchers then used medical, pharmacy and legal registries dcumenting substance use and mental health disrders fr the same individuals in adulthd.
Having cntrlled factrs such as the target individuals’ wn genetic tendencies and family sci-ecnmic factrs, the researchers still fund a clear assciatin between peers’ genetic tendencies and target individuals’ likelihd f develping a substance use r mental disrder. The impacts were strnger amng schl-based peers than gegraphically defined peers.
Salvatre said mre research is needed t understand why these cnnectins exist. But what is clear, she said, is what the findings mean fr interventins. “If we want t think abut hw t best address these scially cstly disrders, we need t think mre abut netwrk-based and scial interventins,” she said. “It’s nt enugh t think abut individual risk.”
This research als underlines the imprtance f disrupting (中断) prcesses and risks that extend fr at least a decade after attendance in schl, Salvatre added. “Peer genetic influences have a very lng reach,” she said.
8. Why did Salvatre and her clleagues cnduct the research?
A. T check frmer research n sci-genmics.
B. T test the effectiveness f sci-genmics.
C. T figure ut adlescents’ current health cnditin.
D. T explre the field f adlescents’ mental disrders.
9. What methd did Salvatre and her clleagues apply in the research?
A. Analyzing statistics frm a database.B. Referring t previus studies.
C. Cnducting surveys amng teenagers.D. Using a mapping tl t track individuals.
10. The significance f the research lies in that ________.
A. It stressed the urgency f cnducting mre relevant research
B. it reveals the scial cst f mental disrders
C. it highlighted the necessity f mre effective interventins
D. it envisined the pssibility f disrupting risks in a decade
11. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Genetic influences: The Hidden Fundatin f Friendship.
B. Peers’ genetic make-up: The mst influential factr.
C. Wise Friends: Determinants f Yur Persnality.
D. Yur Schl Friends: Their Genes Matter t Yu.
D
Yu see a fantastic ffer, like a htel rm. Yu decide t bk. Then it turns ut there is a service fee. Then a cleaning fee. Then a few ther extra csts. By the time yu pay the final price, it is n lnger the fantastic ffer yu thught.
Welcme t the wrld f drip pricing — the practice f prmting smething at an attractive headline price and then, nce yu’ve cmmitted t the purchase prcess, hitting yu with unavidable add-ns that are “dripped”.
In mst cases, yu see thrugh all additinally added mandatry fees, and even thugh yu culd relinquish the deal, yu chse t bite the bullet and cmplete the deal. Resistance t the idea f starting the search all ver again is nt simply a matter f laziness r indecisin. There’s a prfund psychlgical mechanism at play here, called the present bias.
In the paper, Ding It Nw r Later, ecnmist Matthew Rabin defines peple’s present-biased preference via an example f chsing between ding seven hurs f unpleasant activity n April 1 r eight hurs tw weeks later: If asked n February 1, mst peple will chse the earlier ptin. But cme April 1, given the same chice, mst f us tend t put ff wrk till April 15. In simple terms, the incnvenience f ding smething “right nw” ften feels disprprtinately large. Beynd the challenge f starting ver, there’s anther psychlgical phenmenn that drip pricing uses - lss aversin. Imagine yu’re bking tickets fr a shw. Initially attracted by the headline price, yu’re nw presented with different seating categries. Seeing a VIP ticket is within yur budget, yu decide t frk ut. But then, during the checkut prcess, the drip begins. Yu realize yu culd have chsen lwer-categry seats, but by this stage, yu’ve already imagined yurself enjying the shw frm thse nice seats. Ging back t a cheaper seat will feel like a lss.
Buyers wuld benefit frm a ban n drip pricing. Many cuntries are taking steps t prtect cnsumers frm drip pricing. The effectiveness f such measures, hwever, is uncertain. Nnetheless, yu can hpefully make a mre infrmed decisin by understanding why the strategy wrks.
12. Which f the fllwing is an example f drip pricing?
A. Flight Hub intrduces a bnus after yu chse their flight.
B. Airbnb ffers yu a membership accunt when yu bk a trip.
C. Rent-A-Car charges wear and tear fees beynd the advertised price.
D. Ticketmaster prvides ptinal items at later stages f yur purchase.
13. What des the underlined wrd “relinquish” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Reach.B. Abandn.C. Sign.D. Expand.
14. Hw will Rabin explain peple’s refusal t cancel an rder and remake ne?
A. Peple are likely t blindly stick t their initial intentins.
B. Peple like t grab earlier rewards and delay immediate csts.
C. Peple struggle t make a decisin amng multiple chices.
D. Peple tend t tlerate additinal csts within their budget.
15. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the text?
A. T explain why peple fall int the drip pricing trick.
B. T educate custmers n hw t deal with drip pricing.
C. T call n gvernments t prtect cnsumers’ interests.
D. T intrduce tw psychlgical phenmena abut spending.
