Wheat and rice — which benefit frm mre CO₂ in the atmsphere — culd see grwing utput, while crn and srghum culd see a decline with warmer temperatures.
Farmers can adjust their practices t a warmer climate in fur key ways:
A recent study by experts mdeled three adaptatin methds-changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing bth f them. The chart belw shws their impact n the utput f crn, rice, srghum, sybean and wheat.
These three adaptatin methds can already g sme way t relieve climate pressures in sme cuntries. But f curse, we dn’t nly care abut crp prductin at the glbal level. If farmers in particular regins — especially thse that are mst fd-insecure — cannt adapt t climate change, this is still a majr prblem. S there is mre we can d in the future.

There is a particular srt f bx that hides in every hme, full f “memrabilia” r “mements”. Baby teeth, divrce certificates, spare keys fr lcks unknwn; the whle thing is filled with assciatin, emtin, nstalgia (怀旧) and pain. That bx is my rival. That bx is my dm (劫数).
But listen t me: yu can get rid f these things. Yur child’s receptin maths bk? Put it in the recycling bin, my friends, and feel that burden lift. That secnd cheese grater given t yu by a well-meaning uncle? Take it t a charity shp and delight in the feeling f relief.
Gd, I lve thrwing things away. Nt the irrespnsible rush f puring perfectly usable items int landfill, f curse. But taking a bx f tys t a charity shp when my sn is at schl? Delicius. Handing ut unwrn clthes t friends and neighbrs? Delightful. Recycling early drafts f my bk? Incredible. Frankly, I hpe we will all have better things t d than read thrugh ur ld ntebks, diaries r letters. S, I put them in the recycling. That sweet unburdening release can cheer me up fr the rest f the day.
I grew up in a huse where sentimentality (多愁善感) was a disease. When ur ld gas ven brke, my sister made my parents bury it in the garden with a full, flwery ceremny because she wasn’t yet ready t say gdbye. My father cries every time he lks at ne f the blankets knitted by his mther — despite the fact that it is n his bed. In this envirnment, it was inevitable that at least ne child was ging t g the ther way.
There is still plenty in my hme that is ugly and wrks badly, but sadly I haven’t sld enugh flwery wallpaper t be able t affrd t replace it. But when the pprtunity arises, d I leap at the chance t thrw that stuff ut f my huse and mve n? Yu bet yur bx f dm I d.

Used since the 1930s, cmpressin (压缩技术) is nw a cmmn trick in the music industry. Althugh it has lng been suspected f psing a threat t human ears, there has been little experimental evidence until the publicatin f recent research in guinea pigs (豚鼠).
The cmpser Claude Debussy called music the space between the ntes. Offering structure and distinctive phrasing, these pauses give the listener’s brain vital leisure time that helps auditry neurns — the nerve cells invlved in hearing recver. Cmpressed music interrupts this recvery because making the quiet parts luder can fill many millisecnd-lng gaps in the signal with nise. As a result, many music enthusiasts find listening t cmpressed music quite tiring.
T test whether cmpressin can negatively affect hearing, scientists turned t Adele’s “I Miss Yu”, whse distinctive frequency spectrum (频谱) results in all restrative pauses being wiped ut after cmpressin. They als turned t guinea pigs, animals that can hear similar sund frequencies t humans while als being able t sit calmly fr hurs t listen t the same sng n repeat.
The guinea pigs were divided int tw grups: One grup listened t the regular track, while a cmpressed versin was played t the ther grup. Imprtantly, the music was played t bth grups at an average vlume f 102 decibels (分贝), uncmfrtably lud but just belw Britain’s Health and Safety Executive’s recmmended maximum average fr live music.
Tests f the stapedius muscle (镫骨肌), which cntracts t prtect the inner ear frm lud nises, revealed that bth nrmal and cmpressed music reduced the muscle’s ability t cntract t 40% f its riginal level. Thugh the animals that heard the standard track recvered fully within a day r s, thse expsed t the cmpressed versin did nt. Their stapedius muscle respnses were still at less than half their strength by the time the experiment ended a week later.
Althugh the study des nt address the level at which cmpressin starts t be harmful, the results d suggest that the average decibel level might nt be the nly harmful prperty f music.
      8. Hw d cmpressed sngs affect listeners?
      A. By remving distinctive musical patterns.
      B. By rbbing auditry neurns f rest perids.
      C. By making the musical structure repetitive.
      D. By increasing the gaps between musical ntes.
      9. Why was Adele’s “I Miss Yu” selected fr the experiment?
      A. Its repeated pauses are vital fr auditry neurn recvery.
      B. Its sund frequency can make guinea pigs calm dwn fr hurs.
      C. Its distinctive frequency spectrum makes it ppular amng peple.
      D. Its restrative pauses will be cmpletely remved when cmpressed.
      10. What cnclusin can the researchers draw frm the experiment?
      A. 102 decibels are universally damaging t animals’ hearing.
      B. Expsure t cmpressed music hurts ears in a lasting way.
      C. Auditry neurns can adjust quickly t cmpressed signals.
      D. Bth nrmal and cmpressed music reduced the muscle’s ability.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Lst Pauses: Hw Audi Gaps Prtects Ears
      B. Decibel Levels: The Leading Factr in Hearing Lss
      C. Cmpressin: The Hidden Health Cst Between Ntes
      D. Mdern Music: The Chief Cause f Hearing Damage

There are between 6 and 8 basic human emtins, r s mst theries suggest. Psychlgist Paul Ekman lists jy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise, while psychlgist Rbert Plutchik adds trust and anticipatin t the mix. These basic emtins can be cmbined in multiple ways – fr example, fear plus jy, the cmbinatin f tw cntrasting emtins, creates excitement. Cnsider the feeling f waiting in line fr a rller caster ride: yur heart races with bth fear and jy.
Emtins can mix r cntrast much like clurs in art. Primary clurs such as red, yellw, and blue cmbine t frm new shades like range, green, r purple. When these mix further, we get in-between tnes such as red-range r yellw-range, ften given mre vivid names like scarlet r amber.
In 1962, Plutchik went s far as t arrange his eight primary emtins n a wheel, inspired by the clur wheel, placing cntrasting emtins ppsite each ther (jy ppsite sadness; surprise ppsite anticipatin). Each primary emtin has three levels f intensity. Jy, fr instance, can range frm serenity at lw intensity, t jy, and finally t ecstasy at its peak. Anger can similarly range frm mild annyance, thrugh anger itself, t full-blwn rage — the emtinal equivalent f fire-engine red. The ‘spaces’ between primary emtins are filled by mixtures f tw emtins: jy cmbined with trust prduces lve (much like red and yellw make range), while fear and surprise tgether can create awe.
Althugh Plutchik’s ‘Wheel f Emtins’ may be smewhat simplistic, it underscres that emtins exist alng a spectrum (光谱), vary in intensity, and ften ccur in cmplex cmbinatins rather than as islated states. Just as an artist carefully brings tgether different shades when creating an artwrk, ur lives, t, are shaped by emtinal cmbinatins. By cnsciusly adding mre psitive emtins — like serenity, acceptance, and interest — we nt nly increase ur capacity fr jy, ptimism, and lve, but we can als sften the intensity f the less favurable emtins that we experience in life.
Emtins can hijack ur minds. They prepare us fr actin, and they neighbur ur perceptin. But they als reveal what matters t us mst. […] The basic emtins — anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, and happiness — are universal, recgnisable acrss cultures and even species. They are shrt-lasting but pwerful, autmatic respnses that help us deal with ur scial wrld. But we als develp cmplex emtins that mix these basic nes. And imprtantly, we can learn t recgnise the micr-expressins and tiny hints n peple’s faces t understand their emtinal states. This is nt just useful — it carries mral significance. Being emtinally literate increases ur capacity fr understanding, and peaceful cexistence. Emtinal awareness, then, is nt nly abut cntrl but abut cnnectin.
      — Paul Ekman, Emtins Revealed
      12. Why des the writer mentin clur thery?

      C. Acceptance can be a mixture f basic emtins.
      D. Primary emtins ccur at a fixed level f intensity.

      B. It dwnplays emtinal cmplexity but cnveys a key idea.
      C. It prvides a detailed and scientific explanatin f emtins.
      D. It fcuses mre n artistic imagery than n emtinal reality.
      15. What des Paul Ekman mean by “Emtins can hijack ur minds”?
