I step ut the back dr and the blackness f night swallws me. There is n mn t light my way t the clthes-line and my frgtten wash. I’m pilted by the memry f a thusand trips alng the familiar path. Sn my arms are piled with night-damp pants and shirts that have danced all day t the pwerful wind.
The trip back is easier. The lights f the huse guide me — great squares f amber light suspended in the darkness. Everything inside the huse appears transfrmed. The kitchen cabinets lk warmer, richer; the rws f jars and bttles are hmier. Even the pine wall behind the stve glws with a new persnality.
I back up farther int the yard. Frm here, I can see the living rm. Jhn’s head is bent ver a spelling bk, his hair glden in the lamplight, his face set with a frwn f cncentratin. Rbert kneels by the sfa, pushing a wheeled Leg alng the cliff-edge f the cushin. The crner f a newspaper flaps int sight and disappears as Richard’s invisible hands turn the pages. I picture his absrbed face, studius-lking in new reading glasses. Fr a split secnd, I am a stranger peeking int a hme I have never seen befre.
What if I culd never again tuch Jhn’s springy (有弹力的) hair r see Rbert’s bright smile? Deep inside me, a dr pens that barrier we set up t guard ur secret selves and withut cnditins, I let my family in. All the annyances that families are likely t feel, all the twists and stumbling blcks in ur relatinships, all the difficulties f living tgether in harmny becme unimprtant — verwhelmed by the simple fact that we lve ne anther.
Mments like this dn’t ccur every day, and maybe that’s the way it shuld be. It wuld be exhausting t live ur lives weighed dwn by such intensity f feeling. But the memry sustains me, just as the smell f fresh air clings t the clthes in my arms.

Say a friend texts yu with tw tickets t a sld-ut cncert the upcming weekend. Naturally, yu pause fr a mment, then type back a single wrd: “Maybe”. It feels like the safest respnse. Yet, unknwingly, with that ne wrd, yu have left yur expectant friend in limb— his wn plans nw stuck, dependent n yur final decisin.
As a matter f fact, peple ften misread what smene extending an invitatin wants t hear. We cnsistently fund that peple verrate an inviter’s likelihd f preferring a “maybe” ver a “n”. Mrever, they fail t realize hw much mre disrespected peple feel when they receive a “maybe” in respnse t their invitatin.
Naturally, we wanted t figure ut why this awkward situatin plays ut. We fund that it’s largely due t smething called “mtivated reasning (动机推理)”. Mtivated reasning ccurs when a persn interprets infrmatin in a ne-sided way t arrive at a cnclusin that matches their wn wishes. In ther wrds, invitees cnvince themselves that inviters want t hear “maybe” instead f “n”, because a “maybe” is better fr the invitee, allwing them t leave their ptins pen. Saying “n” right away leaves them with n chice and can cause FOMO — the fear f missing ut.
Even s, there were certain situatins that made peple mre cmfrtable saying “n” t an invitatin. In ne study, we had invitees put themselves in the shes f the inviters. This made them mre likely t realize that inviters wuld prbably prefer a clear answer. In anther study, we had peple get invited t d smething they didn’t want t d. We fund that mtivated reasning didn’t wrk then.
S next time yu get an invitatin, remember: a quick and clear “n” beats a lng, unclear “maybe”. It’s a win-win: yur hnesty saves the inviter frm limb as well as secures yu future invitatins.
8.What des the underlined wrd “limb” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
      A. Excitement.B. Regret.C. Uncertainty.D. Relief.
9.Why d invitees ften chse “maybe” instead f “n” accrding t the passage?
      A. They fail t decide quickly.
      B. They allw inviters decisin time.
      C. They want t shw respect.
      D. They hpe t keep ptins pen.
10.What is true abut “mtivated reasning”?
      A. It leads t a direct refusal.
      B. It results frm ne-sided thinking.
      C. It causes FOMO f invitees.
      D. It wrks regardless f the situatin.
11.The authr writes the passage mainly t ______.
      A. share tips fr a graceful refusal
      B. shw hw being turned dwn hurts
      C. encurage clear replies t invitatins
      D. explain why FOMO affects decisins

On Earth Day — April 22 — the XPrize Fundatin, which hlds cntests that encurage peple t cme up with new ideas t slve big prblems, annunced the winners f its Carbn Remval cntest. A cmpany called Mati Carbn wn the $50 millin prize. Their methd is simple, but it culd remve huge amunts f carbn dixide and als help farmers grw mre fd.
The cmpany uses a very cmmn kind f vlcanic rck called basalt. Basalt is used wrldwide t cnstruct rads and buildings. Cmpanies that break up the basalt ften have a fine pwder f basalt left ver that they can’t use.
Luckily, this is exactly what Mati Carbn needs. The cmpany remves carbn by spreading this rck pwder n farm fields. The pwder pulls CO2 ut f the water in the sil and stres it in a way that will last fr thusands f years. Mati’s methd f carbn remval is called “enhanced rck weathering”.
The results aren’t just gd fr the envirnment — they’re als gd fr the farmers. Farmers wh use the basalt pwder n their fields grw rughly 25% mre fd. In areas with pr sil, farmers can grw as much as 70% mre. Mati Carbn is already spreading basalt pwder n farms in several cuntries, including India, Tanzania, and Zambia. The cmpany is fcused n wrking with small farmers in prer cuntries, putting the pwder n their farmlands fr free. T pay fr this, the cmpany sells “carbn credits”. Since Mati Carbn is remving pllutin, large cmpanies that create pllutin buy credits t “ffset” their pllutin s they can be “carbn neutral”.
One f the things that impressed the XPrize judges is hw the cmpany carefully tracks and recrds the impact it is having. S far, Mati Carbn has remved ver 1,000 metric tns f CO2. But the cmpany believes that number will grw rapidly. It is planning t begin wrk in three mre cuntries sn and allw ther cmpanies t use its methds t reach even mre areas.
12.What is the material used by the winning cmpany?
      A. Cnstructin waste.B. Rare vlcanic ashes.
      C. Industrial prduct.D. Farm carbn dixide.
13.Which wrds best describe Mati Carbn?
      A. Newly-built and cnserved.B. Far-sighted and aggressive.
      C. Prfit-driven and successful.D. Ec-minded and sympathetic.
14.What can we learn abut Mati Carbn accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. It has expanded its business acrss the wrld.
      B. It has develped mre methds t remve CO2.
      C. It intends t share its patent with ther cmpanies.
      D. It plans t invite XPrize judges t track its impact.
15.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Jint Effrt Pays ff in Breaking up the Basalt
      B. Great Chance Exists in the Green Agriculture
      C. Mati Carbn Has Mre Carbn Credits t Sell
      D. Pwerful Idea Wins Carbn Remval XPrize

The nly bad thing abut a gd creative day is that it ends, with n guarantee f repeating that prductivity tmrrw. 16 These methds nt nly prevent creative gaps but als help build a cntinuus rhythm, making inspiratin less dependent n luck.
Ernest Hemingway had the smart trick f always calling it a day at a pint when he knew what came next. 17 What a creative rganizatinal tl! Knwing what cmes next is like crcheting (钩针编织): The end f ne day knits int the next, and yu wind up with a garment (毛衣) that is flexible but strng.
18 Think abut experienced stand-up cmedians: they never perfrm until they’re ttally tired. Instead, they end their shws when the audience is still begging fr mre. Apply this t yur creative wrk: stp while yu still have a little energy left. That unused fuel will becme yur perfect starting pint tmrrw.
Try this simple exercise fr a week: every day, end yur wrking day when yu still have smething in reserve. 19 Is it a few half-frmed ideas yu haven’t explred yet? Or a thught yu wanted t share with smene but didn’t? Write dwn exactly what it is n a small card, put the card away, and dn’t think abut it fr the rest f the day. Start the next day by lking at yur nte.
Harry Truman had a wise habit: whenever he wrte a letter in anger, he’d put the letter away in a desk drawer fr twenty-fur hurs befre rereading it. 20 It’s the same with yur nte. When yu lk at it the next day, yu’ll nt nly pick up yesterday’s reserve but als see rm fr imprvement with a fresh mind.
A.He built himself a bridge t the next day.
B.Dn’t push yurself t the pint f ttal exhaustin.
C.This pause lets him check if his initial anger still hlds.
D.Writing dwn ideas immediately helps avid frgetting them.
E.The key is knwing what exactly yu’re saving fr tmrrw.
F.Frtunately, there are practical ways t keep creativity flwing.
G.Many creative peple struggle with keeping cnsistent inspiratin.
