      A few years ag I tk my sns fr ice cream, and while my lder sn went inside t buy us ur milk shakes, my yunger sn and I waited n the bench (长椅) utside.
      At a certain pint I realized that sitting right next t me were a little girl with a facial defrmity (畸形), her friend (r sister), and her mther.
      When my yunger sn lked up and saw her, he reacted exactly the way yu might think a three-year ld wuld react when seeing smething that scared him: he started t cry - pretty ludly, t.       Fr the rest f the day, I culdn’t stp thinking abut hw that scene had played ut. It ccurred t me that they prbably went thrugh smething like that hundreds f times a day. What wuld that be like? What culd I be teaching my children s they culd understand hw t respnd better-next-time? What I shuld have dne, instead f trying t avid the situatin, was invlve the girl and her mther in cnversatin. If my sn cried, s be it: kids cry. I shuld have set a better example fr him, and shwn him there was nthing t fear.
      As I was thinking abut the scene, the sng Wnder by Natalie Merchant came n the radi that night, and smething abut the wrds t the sng just gt t me. That very night, I started writing Wnder, a stry abut a by with a facial difference.

      Every day, we face a range f decisins; frm picking a shirt fr wrk t chsing a jb. Sme f these decisins have far-reaching cnsequences that may influence the rest f ur lives. These chices can be difficult, and we aren’t ften aware f the reasns behind why we make certain chices. A new study explres hw we make decisins when it cmes t shrt and lng-term rewards (回报). It fund that we were mre impulsive (冲动) with decisins that may bring abut an immediate reward than these that have lnger-term cnsequences.
      The study was cnducted by Prfessr Pleger frm Ruhr University Bchm. The team wanted t knw hw we make decisins abut what t eat and hw t make a prfit. They asked subjects t chse between smaller immediate rewards and larger rewards that they had t wait fr. The lnger they waited, the bigger the reward. Brain activity was bserved using functinal MRI, which shws which parts f the brain are active during decisin-making.
      The brain bservatin shwed interesting differences when it came t each type f reward. When peple made decisins abut mney, brain areas respnsible fr thinking abut the future and self-cntrl were mre active. When deciding abut fd, the areas that are linked t immediate satisfactin were mre invlved. This means that ur decisin-making pattern depends n the type f reward that we are presented with.
      By understanding hw ur brains respnd t different types f rewards, we may develp better tls that cntrl hw we make thse decisins that may have serius cnsequences in ur lives. Prfessr Pleger believes that understanding these differences can lead t new treatments fr impulsive behavirs and addictins (瘾). Fr example, Neurfeedback (神经反馈) can bserve real-time brain activity t help individuals manage their brain functins; which can help them make particularly difficult decisins, specifically surrunding unhealthy r addictive chices.
