An El Niñ-less summer is cming
El Niñ is a natural climate pattern marked by warmer than average cean temperatures in the equatrial Pacific. When the water gets cler than average, it’s a La Niña. Either phase can have an effect n weather arund the glbe.
By June, frecasters expect thse cean temperatures t hver clse t nrmal, marking a s-called neutral phase, befre La Niña builds in early summer, accrding t NOAA’s Climate Predictin Center.
But the strength f El Niñ r La Niña’s influence n US weather isn’t unifrm and varies greatly based n the strength f the phenmena and the seasn itself.
The influence f El Niñ r La Niña n US weather isn’t as clear-cut in the summer as it is in the winter, especially during a transitin between the tw phases, said Michelle L’Heureux, a climate scientist with the Climate Predictin Center.
Temperature differences between the trpics and Nrth America are mre extreme in the winter, L’Heureux explained. This allws the jet stream t becme quite strng and influential, reliably sending strms int certain parts f the US.
In the summer, the difference in temperature between the tw regins isn’t as significant and the bvius influence n US weather wanes.
But we can lk back at what happened during similar summers t get a glimpse f what culd cme this summer.
      In shrt: It’s nt cl.
The summer f 2016 was ne f the httest n recrd fr the Lwer 48. La Niña cnditins were in place by midsummer and fllwed a very strng El Niñ winter.
Summer 2020 fllwed a similar script: La Niña cnditins frmed midsummer after a weak El Niñ winter but still prduced ne f the httest summers n recrd and the mst active hurricane seasn n recrd.
Then there’s the fact that these climate phenmena are playing ut in a warming wrld, raising the ceiling n the extreme heat ptential.
“This bviusly isn’t ur grandmther’s transitin ut f El Niñ – we’re in a much warmer wrld s the impacts will be different,” L’Heureux, said. “We’re seeing the cnsequences f climate change.”
Current summer temperature utlks fr the US are certainly bringing the heat.
Abve-average temperatures are frecast ver nearly every square mile f the Lwer 48. Only prtins f the Daktas, Minnesta and Mntana have an equal chance f encuntering near nrmal, abve- r belw-nrmal temperatures.
A huge prtin f the West is likely t have warmer cnditins than nrmal. This frecast tracks with decades f climate trends, accrding t L’Heureux.
Summers have warmed mre in the West than in any ther regin f the US since the early 1990s, accrding t data frm NOAA. Phenix is a prime example. The city’s average July temperature last year was an unheard-f 102.7 degrees, making it the httest mnth n recrd fr any US city. It was als the deadliest year n recrd fr heat in Maricpa Cunty, where Phenix is lcated.
Frecasts als shw a wrrying precipitatin trend fr parts f the West.
Large sectins f the West and the central US are likely t be drier than nrmal. This dryness, cmbined with abve-nrmal heat, which nly amplifies the dryness, culd be a recipe fr new r wrsening drught.
Wetter than nrmal cnditins are in the frecast frm the Gulf Cast t the Nrtheast. Strmy weather culd be a cnsistent cmpanin fr much f the East – but whether it cmes frm typical rain and thunderstrms r trpical activity wn’t be knwn fr mnths.

两者合称 ENSO(厄尔尼诺-南方涛动),是地球最重要的年际气候变异模式。

      Passage 1
(24-25高二下·重庆·期中)Chinese scientists have created starch (淀粉), a type f cmplex carbhydrate fund in plants, using carbn dixide, hydrgen and electricity.
Experts say if such technique can be scaled-up (大规模) t the level f industrializatin, it may revlutinize hw this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is made, since it des nt require farming and prcessing a large quantity f starchy crps such as sweet ptates and crn, thus saving mre water, fertilizer, and arable land.
It may als be used t recycle carbn dixide int a cnsumable prduct. This will help reduce carbn emissins and fight climate change, especially if the electricity used is frm renewable surces like slar and wind.
In space explratin it may prvide a sustainable fd surce fr astrnauts as they travel lng distances in space and try t clnize ther planets where grwing fd is impssible. Future space travelers may simply turn the carbn dixide they breathe ut int fd they eat.
Ma Yanhe, the directr f the Tianjin Institute f Industrial Bitechnlgy f the Chinese Academy f Sciences, says starch and ther cmplex carbhydrates make up 60 t 80 percent f the human diet.
“Our breakthrugh demnstrates that creating a cmplex cmpund like starch is achievable in a lab, and there are many industries that can benefit frm this technlgy,” he says.
Plants create carbhydrates like starch thrugh phtsynthesis (光合作用), which is an extremely cmplex prcess, says Ma, adding that it will take a plant abut 60 steps t turn carbn dixide, water and sunlight int starch.
Cai Ta, ne f the first authrs f the study, says fr six years, his team has been fcusing n a single prject: hw t make starch, but d it at a higher speed. He says their methd invlves first cnverting carbn dixide and hydrgen gas int methanl (甲醇). Scientists then piece these single-carbn mlecules like a puzzle int bigger and mre cmplex mlecules via enzymatic (酶的) prcesses.
With the help f supercmputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch making prcess frm abut 60 int 11 steps and prduced starch. Thellab-made starch is chemically identical t starch in nature.
      1. Which is NOT a ptential benefit if the technique can be used n an industrial level?
      A. It will have a psitive influence n climate change.
      B. It will help prduce renewable resurces such as slar and wind.
      C. It will ffer a practical fd slutin fr astrnauts.
      D. It will help save several surces frm water t farming land.
      2. Which might be the biggest difficulty in creating the lab-made starch?
      A. Making starch faster.
      B. Cllecting enugh raw materials.
      C. Repeating the phtsynthesis f plants.
      D. Invlving methanl in the making prcess.
      3. What’s the best title fr the passage?
      A. Starch, an imprtant cmplex carbhydrate.
      B. The great benefits f starch.
      C. Chinese scientists successfully turn carbn dixide int starch.
      D. Chinese scientists make cntributins t climate change.
      4. In which part f a newspaper culd yu mst prbably read the text?
      A. Science.B. Lifestyle.C. Envirnment.D. Health.
B 2 .A 3. C 4. A
根据第二段“Experts say if such technique can be scaled-up (大规模) t the level f industrializatin, it may revlutinize hw this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is made, since it des nt require farming and prcessing a large quantity f starchy crps such as sweet ptates and crn, thus saving mre water, fertilizer, and arable land.(专家表示,如果这种技术能够大规模推广到工业化水平,它可能会彻底改变这种关键营养素和工业原料的生产方式,因为这不需要种植和加工大量的淀粉类作物,如红薯和玉米,从而节省更多的水资源、肥料和耕地)”可知,该技术在工业化水平上的潜在好处包括节约水资源、肥料和耕地,D选项正确;根据第三段中“This will help reduce carbn emissins and fight climate change, especially if the electricity used is frm renewable surces like slar and wind.(这将有助于减少碳排放并对抗气候变化,特别是当所使用的电力来自太阳能和风能等可再生能源时)”可知,该技术对气候变化有积极影响,A选项正确;根据第四段中“In space explratin it may prvide a sustainable fd surce fr astrnauts as they travel lng distances in space and try t clnize ther planets where grwing fd is impssible.(在太空探索中,它可能为宇航员提供一种可持续的食物来源,使他们在进行长途太空旅行及尝试殖民其他无法种植食物的星球时得到补给)”可知,该技术可以为宇航员提供实际的食物解决方案,C选项正确。
根据文章倒数第二段中“Cai Ta, ne f the first authrs f the study, says fr six years, his team has been fcusing n a single prject: hw t make starch, but d it at a higher speed.(该研究的第一作者之一蔡涛说,六年来,他的团队一直专注于一个项目:如何制造淀粉,但速度更快)”和最后一段中“With the help f supercmputing, Chinese scientists have simplified the natural starch making prcess frm abut 60 int 11 steps and prduced starch.(在超级计算的帮助下,中国科学家将天然淀粉的制造过程从大约60个步骤简化为11个步骤,并生产出淀粉)”可推知,团队六年专注于提高制造淀粉的速度,将自然生产淀粉的60步简化为人工合成淀粉的11步,可推知制造实验室合成淀粉最大的困难可能是更快制造淀粉。故选A。
故选A。
      Passage 2
(24-25高二上·浙江G5联盟·期中)Brn in Sudan in 1990, Hamza Yassin is a wildlife cameraman and TV presenter.
He was eight when they landed in the UK. Besides the changes in climate, he als had t adjust t the change in pets: “Where’s everyne’s pet lins and mnkeys? It was all cats and dgs. I hadn’t realised what a special upbringing I had had. But it was the UK that cemented my lve f wildlife. At first glance, it desn’t lk like there is a lt f wildlife, especially in the winter. But if yu peel back the layers, there is s much.”
Thugh his dctr parents didn’t have time t clsely teach him, they did turn n the televisin; in particular, the Discvery Channel. David Attenbrugh’s The Life f Birds was an eye-pening experience, and Steve Irwin was a huge inspiratin, t. While he thught they had cl jbs, he never thught he culd be a presenter. He never saw anyne like him in frnt f the camera. He was a teenager wh wasn’t white.
It was still a lng rad t establishing his career, thugh. It was nt until after he became an assistant fr the incredible wildlife cameraman Jesse Wilkinsn that he realized he needed t create his wn jurney.
