Future Yu was created by scientists frm different research institutes (机构), including the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) in the US. Pwered by AI, the prgram begins by asking users questins abut their persnalities, current lives and future plans. It then uses this infrmatin as “memries” t create a simulatin (模拟) f the user at the age f 60. This allws users t ask questins and get advice fr the future frm “themselves”.
The platfrm can als prduce a pht fr each user, shwing hw they might lk at age 60. “The system makes the simulatin very realistic (逼真的). Future Yu is much mre detailed than what a persn culd cme up with by just imagining their future selves,” said Pattie Maes, a MIT scientist wh wrked n the prgram.
Accrding t the platfrm’s fficial website, Future Yu is designed t “help users develp mre lng-term thinking” by imprving their “future self-cntinuity” (未来自我连续性). This term describes hw cnnected a persn feels t his r her future self. The strnger the cnnectin, the mre likely a persn is t make decisins that benefit their lng-term well-being, in areas such as mney, educatin, r health.
The scientists tested Future Yu n 344 vlunteers. Thse wh interacted with Future Yu fr 10 t 30 minutes felt less anxius (焦虑的) and mre mtivated (有动力的) abut the uncertain nature f the future cmpared t thse wh chatted with a general AI r nly filled ut surveys.
Hwever, Future Yu has its limits. “It is nt clear whether peple have dne anything different [r] changed their behavir (行为) as a result f interacting with their future self,” Iv Vlaev frm the UK’s University f Warwick tld Eurnews. In additin, the AI prgram can nly ffer a lk int ne pssible future, rather than make varius predictins. At the end f the day, “it’s all a big pretend”, nted an article in Frbes. We shuldn’t take Future Yu’s wrds as cmpletely true.
