WEIGHING IN ON WEIGHT: CALCULATIONS TOOLS
Many peple check their bdy mass index (BMI) t see if they are verweight. Hwever, this health tl can smetimes be misleading. Nw, a mre accurate alternative, the bdy rundness index (BRI), is available t assess excessive visceral fat cntent What is BMI?
BMI = weight (kg) / height2 (m)
Limitatins f BMI.
* BMI, which nly measures yur height and weight, cannt distinguish between muscle and fat, which might lead t misleading results.
* Athletes, wh have less bdy fat and mre muscle, tend t have a higher BMI because muscle weighs mre than fat.
* The BMI f peple with thin limbs (四肢) and a pt belly may be nrmal r even lw, althugh they pssibly have excessive visceral fat.
What is BRI?
Advantages f BRI
* BRI is used t assess whether the bdy’s visceral fat cntent is within the nrmal range. It is calculated based n height and waist circiumference measurements. The higher yur BRI, the mre visceral fat yu have.
* Cmpared with BMI, BRI can effectively filter (过滤) ut thse with large muscle mass. This enables it t mre accurately determine peple with high visceral fat cntent.

【答案】21.C 22.A 23.D
标题下面的信息“BMI, which nly measures yur height and weight, cannt distinguish between muscle and fat, which might lead t misleading results. 故选A。
根据Advantages f BRI标题下“It is calculated based n height and waist circumference measurements. (它是根据身高和腰围计算)”以及“Cmpared with BMI, BRI can effectively filter (过滤) ut thse with large muscle mass. This enables it t mre accurately determine peple with high visceral fat cntent.

When 16-year-ld Mei began vlunteering at the migrant children’s library, she felt like an utsider. The children, with their warm laughter and rapid rural dialect, frmed a tightknit circle that her textbk-perfect Mandarin culdn’t penetrate. During strytelling sessins, little Wenjing wuld vanish behind twering bkshelves, her small frame swallwed by shadws. Mei’s attempts t engage her with classic tales fell flat, the unfamiliar syllables (音节) buncing ff Wenjing’s silence. The library supervisr explained that many migrant children, having left parents behind in villages, ften retreated int slitary wrlds — a cping mechanism Mei reslved t understand.
One strmy afternn, rain drummed against the windws as Mei fund Wenjing hunched (驼背的) in a dim crner, clutching a pencil. On a sheet f paper, stick figures danced — a rund-faced wman, a tiny girl, and a lnely huse. “Wh’s this?” Mei whispered in halting dialect, stringing tgether phrases she’d heard frm her grandmther. Wenjing’s pencil frze. Fr the first time, she met Mei’s gaze. “Mama... city... far,” she breathed, tapping the stick wman. Mei nticed calluses (老茧) n Wenjing’s fingertips — marks f lng hurs helping at her fster family’s vegetable stall, where spken wrds mattered less than quick hands.
The next day, Mei arrived armed with wrdless picture bks. They built twers f giggles with finger puppets. staged silent dinsaur battles, and traced star signs n fgged windws. Language became unnecessary — a raised eyebrw, a shared grin, hands shaping imaginary wrlds. Wenjing began leaving small drawings in Mei’s bag: a flwer after lunch, a star befre leaving — each a silent thank yu.
At the farewell gathering, Wenjing pressed a paper int Mei’s palm. Stained crayn strkes shwed tw girls, ne tall and ne small, their jined hands arching int a rainbw that swallwed strm cluds. N translatins required. The rainbw’s clrs bled utside the lines, just as their friendship had transcended language barriers t paint smething brighter.
24.Why did Wenjing initially avid Mei?
A.She feared crwded spaces.B.Mei criticized her drawings.
C.Mei’s frmal speech felt alien.D.She disliked Mei’s strict rules.
25.The wrd “halting” in paragraph 2 mst likely means .

根据第一段中的“The children, with their warm laughter and rapid rural dialect, frmed a tightknit circle that her textbk-perfect Mandarin culdn’t penetrate. During strytelling sessins, little Wenjing wuld vanish behind twering bkshelves, her small frame swallwed by shadws. Mei’s attempts t engage her with classic tales fell flat, the unfamiliar syllables buncing ff Wenjing’s silence.(孩子们用温暖的笑声和快速的乡村方言形成了一个紧密的小圈子,梅那教科书般标准的普通话无法融入其中。
根据第二段中的“Mei whispered in halting dialect, stringing tgether phrases she’d heard frm her grandmther. Wenjing’s pencil frze. Fr the first time, she met Mei’s gaze. “Mama... city... far,” she breathed, tapping the stick wman.
根据第三段中的“The next day, Mei arrived armed with wrdless picture bks. They built twers f giggles with finger puppets, staged silent dinsaur battles, and traced star signs n fgged windws. Language became unnecessary — a raised eyebrw, a shared grin, hands shaping imaginary wrlds.(第二天,梅带来了无字图画书。
根据最后一段中的“Stained crayn strkes shwed tw girls, ne tall and ne small, their jined hands arching int a rainbw that swallwed strm cluds. N translatins required. The rainbw’s clrs bled utside the lines, just as their friendship had transcended language barriers t paint smething brighter.(蜡笔的痕迹描绘了两个女孩,一个高一个矮,她们牵起的双手化作一道吞没乌云的彩虹。

Few stamp and cin cllectrs desire t becme prfessinals, yet many enjy cllecting. Last and mst imprtant, d nt think f giving up as a failure, but as a chice. Yur time is limited. Try new activities, rediscver previus interests, and revise yur ambitins. Be hnest with yurself abut yur chances, and chse the gals that best suit yu. And remember that, when yu give up a gal, yu d nt fail. Yu make a chice t free up yur time fr ther pssibilities.
28.What result may “selectin bias” bring t peple?

A.Accepting failure with ease des make sense.
B.One can make a hbby ut f an unattainable gal.
C.Turn t prfessinals when realizing persnal gals.

31.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.Identity Crisis: Be True t Yurself.B.Gals r Hbbies: Make Yur Chice.
C.Never Say Never: The Key t Success.D.Winners D Quit: Be Wise Abut Yur Gals.
根据第二段“Stries f achieving childhd dreams thrugh perseverance might be uplifting, but they suffer frm “selectin bias”. Put simply, they are nt infrmative, because nbdy tells stries abut the many peple wh persevered but failed after wasting a gd part f their lives.(通过坚持不懈实现童年梦想的故事可能令人振奋,但它们受到“选择偏见”的影响。
根据第三段“Recent studies have shwn that being able t give up sme gals and dreams and redirect yur energy tward mre reasnable nes is imprtant fr mental well-being and leads t higher quality f life in the lng term. At tp universities, there’s a phenmenn knwn as “Stanfrd Duck Syndrme (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear t mve gracefully (优雅地). Hwever, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately t keep up.
Experts frm Stanfrd’s Health Services uncvered this trubling trend: during the day, many Stanfrd students are seen scializing in cafés, seemingly withut any stress r the need t study. Hwever, at night, they start studying, smetimes fr the entire night, trying t maintain the image f effrtless success. This cmes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermre, it leads t a cmmn miscnceptin: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while thse wrking hard are less capable.
In an effrt t challenge this miscnceptin, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked t bserve a series f clrs carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity thrughut the prcess. The experiment was divided int tw parts: ne with easily distinguishable clrs and the ther with clrs that were quite similar, requiring mre effrt t differentiate. As the difficulty f the task increased, there was a nticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked t memry and abstract reasning.
The study reveals that as tasks require mre effrt, mre areas f the brain becme engaged. Grwth desn’t cme frm talent alne but frm the cnsistent applicatin f effrt. Our brain functins like a muscle. Withut effrt, even ur inbrn talents will fade ver time.
This pushes us t recnsider the underlying culture that might lead t this phenmenn. Instead f fcusing t much n utcmes r singing high praise fr inbrn talents, we shuld emphasize the learning prcess and cntinuus imprvement. By encuraging a culture that values effrt, we can help students realize that intelligence is nt fixed but grws thrugh hard wrk. Such a shift wuld nt nly reduce the pressures assciated with the “Stanfrd Duck Syndrme”, but als have a prfund impact n persnal develpment and the future f educatin.
32.What phenmenn des the “Stanfrd Duck Syndrme” prbably describe?

C.Displaying graceful images t attract thers.
D.Hiding hard wrk t appear naturally gifted.
33.Hw des the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge the miscnceptin?
A.By shwing effrt fuels the brain activity.
B.By prving fcus enhances brain functin.
C.By linking clr recgnitin t intelligence.
D.By assciating careful bservatin with talent.
34.What is the authr’s main cncern abut “Stanfrd Duck Syndrme”?
A.It values the learning prcess ver utcmes.
B.It causes stress and false ideas abut success.
C.It prevents students frm recgnizing their talents.
D.It makes students priritize scializing ver studying.
35.Which f the fllwing might the authr agree with?
A.Frtune favrs thse with a clear visin.

【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.B
由文章第一段“At tp universities, there’s a phenmenn knwn as “Stanfrd Duck Syndrme (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear t mve gracefully (优雅地). Hwever, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately t keep up. 和第二段中“Experts frm Stanfrd’s Health Services uncvered this trubling trend: during the day, many Stanfrd students are seen scializing in cafés, seemingly withut any stress r the need t study. Hwever, at night, they start studying, smetimes fr the entire night, trying t maintain the image f effrtless success.
由文章第三段中“As the difficulty f the task increased, there was a nticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked t memry and abstract reasning. 和第四段中“The study reveals that as tasks require mre effrt, mre areas f the brain becme engaged. 故选A。
由文章第二段中“This cmes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermre, it leads t a cmmn miscnceptin: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while thse wrking hard are less capable.
由文章倒数第二段中“Grwth desn’t cme frm talent alne but frm the cnsistent applicatin f effrt. Our brain functins like a muscle. Withut effrt, even ur inbrn talents will fade ver time. 和“By encuraging a culture that values effrt, we can help students realize that intelligence is nt fixed but grws thrugh hard wrk.
