A hneybee's life depends n it successfully harvesting nectar(花蜜)frm flwers t make hney. Deciding which flwer is mst likely t ffer nectar is incredibly difficult. In the new research published recently, ur team reprts hw bees make these cmplex decisins.
We challenged bees with a field f artificial flwers, each f which ffered a tiny drp f sugar syrup. Different-clred "flwers" varied in their likelihd f ffering sugar. We put tiny, harmless paint marks n the back f each bee, and filmed every visit a bee made t the flwer array. We then used cmputer visin and machine learning t autmatically extract and study the rute n which bees flew. Frm this infrmatin, we fund bees sn learned t identify the mst rewarding flwers. They quickly assessed whether t accept r reject flwers, but surprisingly, they made crrect decisins within 0.6 secnd while incrrect decisins tk them 1.2 secnds n average.
The results and what we expected are ples apart. Usually, in animals, an accurate decisin takes lnger than an inaccurate decisin. This is called the speed-accuracy trade-ff, which happens because determining whether a decisin is right r wrng usually depends n hw much evidence we have t make that decisin. Mre evidence means a mre accurate decisin, but gathering evidence takes time. S accurate decisins are usually slw and inaccurate decisins are faster. But bees nly accepted a flwer if, at a glance, they were sure it was rewarding. If they had any uncertainty, they rejected it. They might have missed sme rewarding flwers, but they successfully fcused their effrts nly n the flwers with the best chance and best evidence f prviding them with sugar.
The nly ther animals knwn t beat the speed-accuracy trade-ff are humans and primates. It's indeed amazing that bees seem t be pushing the bundaries.
28. Hw did researchers get the result f the experiment?
A. By bserving bees in the wild. B. By analyzing bees' flight paths.
C. By testing bees in different clrs. D. By cmparing bees' fd preference.
29. What did the research find abut bees?
A. They culd tell artificial flwers immediately.
B. They perfrmed better in certain clred flwers.
C. They made right chices faster than the wrng nes.
D. They made mre crrect decisins than ther species.
30. What des the underlined phrase "ples apart" in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Cntrary. B. Reasnable. C. Essential. D. Cnfusing.
31. Why d bees beat the speed-accuracy trade-ff?
A. They ignre uncertainties.
B. They gather evidence very fast.
C. They stay n the right track while flying.
D. They adpt a special decisin-making mechanism.

In Mby Dick, Herman Melville's nvel f 1851, the authr asks if whales wuld survive the cruel human hunt. Yes, he says, as he fresees a future flded wrld in which the whale wuld utlive us. Nw, the findings f a new study prve that whales can indeed live fr a very lng time.
It has been knwn since the 1990s that Arctic bwhead whales, with their slw metablism(新陈代谢)enabled by cld waters and plentiful fd, can live up t 200 years r mre, as indicated by tests n the prteins in their eyes, and by ld Inuit stne harpn(鱼叉)tips fund in bwheads that had survived earlier hunts. But the new study indicates that the same lifespans may als apply t right whales.
The scientists achieved their new findings by analysing the lifespans f tw similar species: the suthern right whale—fund belw the equatr—and the Nrth Atlantic right whale, nce plentiful ff nrth Eurpean shres but nw fund almst nly alng the eastern cast f the US. They discvered that up t 10% f the thriving suthern species lived past 130 years. Of the much-hunted nrthern species, nly 10% lived beynd 47 years.
But it is a race against time. The ppulatin f the Nrth Atlantic right whale, a clse relative f the bwhead, has decreased s much after the intensive hunts f the past that it is beynd recvery. Accrding t Massachusetts' Center fr Castal Studies (CCS), which has carried ut ne f the lngest-running studies f the critically endangered ppulatin, there are nly 372 individuals left. Declining genetic strength, ship strikes, entanglement(缠绕)in fishing gear and sund pllutin have weakened them t the extent that they have nw been declared "functinally extinct" in the eastern Atlantic, while the west Atlantic ppulatin is "nt recvering".
"Lngevity(长寿)is critically imprtant t species that prduce small numbers f yung. S human-caused death is shrtening the whales' natural lifespan and reprductive perid s much that they are threatened with extinctin. We must d smething. Althugh it may already be t late t d anything, ding smething is better than nthing," says Dr. Charles "Strmy" May, senir scientist at the CCS.
32. Why des the authr mentin Herman Melville's Mby Dick in paragraph 1?
A. T call fr sympathy fr whales' situatin.
B. T intrduce the tpic f whales' lifespan.
C. T illustrate the challenges faced by whales.
D. T prve whales' strng survival capabilities.
33. What can be inferred frm the scientists' new findings?
A. Whales can have a lng lifespan if undisturbed.
B. Right habitats cntribute t whales' lngevity.
C. Right whales can utlive their fellw species.
D. Hunting hardly affects whales' life expectancy.
34. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. The pssibility f restring extinct whale species.
B. The effrts f CCS in saving endangered whales.
C. The impact f human activities n whales' lifespan.
D. The prblems with unsustainable fishery develpment.
35. Hw des Dr. Charles "Strmy" May feel abut the future f whales?
A. Relieved.B. Encuraged.C. Cnfused.D. Wrried.

We then used cmputer visin and machine learning t autmatically extract and study the rute n which bees flew. Frm this infrmatin, we fund bees..."
They quickly assessed whether t accept r reject flwers, but surprisingly, they made crrect decisins within 0.6 secnd while incrrect decisins tk them 1.2 secnds n average."
30. 答案:A
根据前文的"but surprisingly, they made crrect decisins within 0.6 secnd while incrrect decisins tk them 1.2 secnds n average"及画线短语后的"Usually, in animals, an accurate decisin takes lnger than an inaccurate decisin." 故选A项。
But bees nly accepted a flwer if, at a glance, they were sure it was rewarding. If they had any uncertainty, they rejected it."
Nw, the findings f a new study prve that whales can indeed live fr a very lng time"可知,梅尔维尔在《白鲸》中预见了鲸鱼在未来洪水世界能比人类活得更久,而新研究则证实了鲸鱼确实能活很久。
33. 答案:A
故选A项。
Charles "Strmy" May所说的"We must d smething. Althugh it may already be t late t d anything, ding smething is better than nthing"可知,科学家意识到鲸鱼面临着严峻的生存危机,虽然希望采取措施拯救鲸鱼,但又担心为时已晚,这种表述体现出对鲸鱼未来深深的担忧。故选D项。
