embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbl f everything I thught I hated abut my life in the rural Suth. I feared it wuld disqualify me frm being a nted
magazine writer. I wuld have t talk less “cuntry”. S I killed a piece f myself. I’m ashamed f it, but I’m mre ashamed that I tried t kill that part f smene else-change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in cllege. She was determined t wrk fr the student newspaper, which was
where I spent mst f my waking hurs, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her
rts. Early in ur friendship, her mther asked where I was frm, assuming it was smewhere up nrth. Then I felt my effrts paid ff and even wanted t ignre the mistake.
Emily is tw years yunger and she cared abut my pinin. I advised her t be mre like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that thrughut ur cllege years, ften by making fun f her vwel (元音) sunds. I tld myself I was helping her achieve her dream f wrking as a reprter. Nw, I see that it was actually abut justifying my hiding part f myself.
Grandma Carlyn used t tell me, “Girl, dn’t frget where yu cme frm.” Nw I truly understand that. Many things have faded frm memry, but this sticks in my mind with

Scientists at Purdue University created the wrld’s whitest paint — a discvery that nt nly adds yet anther chice t the “which white shuld we paint this wall” dilemma, but als might help the climate crisis.
The paint was develped by Purdue mechanical engineering prfessr Xiulin Ruan and his team. It wrks thrugh a passive cling technlgy that ffers great prmises t reduce space
cling cst and glbal warming. “When we started this prject seven years ag, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind,” Ruan said in a pdcast (播客) episde f This Is Purdue. They wanted t create a paint that wuld reflect sunlight away frm a building,
dramatically decreasing the need fr air cnditining.
Heating, cling, and lighting accunt fr 28 percent f the wrld’s ttal greenhuse gas
emissins. And verusing air cnditining can verwhelm a city’s pwer grid and cause blackuts (停电). In a Queens blackut in 2006, 175,000 peple were left withut pwer, which lead t 40 deaths. This paint culd effectively be an alternative t air cnditiners in sme places.
The paint reflects 98. 1%f slar radiatin while als giving ut infrared (红外线的) heat.
Because the paint takes in less heat frm the sun than it gives ut, a surface cated with this paint is cled belw the surrunding temperature withut using pwer. Cvering a rf area f 1,000
square feet with the paint culd create 10 kilwatts fcling pwer, the researchers fund.“That’s mre pwerful than the air cnditiners used by mst huses,”Ruan tld This Is Purdue.
Yu can’t buy the paint just yet, but researchers are partnering with a cmpany t put the paint n the market. While individual actin t fight elimate change can help save ur planet, it’s imprtant t nte that the vast majrity f the wrld’s greenhuse gas emissins can be traced
back t 100cmpanies. Maybe we can duse(浇) thse cmpanies with this white paint, t — it culd be wrth a sht.
28 .What is knwn abut the paint?

C .The imprtance f air cnditining. D .The result f glbal warming.
30 .Which aspect f the paint is talked abut in Paragraph 4?

C .Its cmpsitin. D .Its disadvantage.

When we’re angry, we ften lk fr ways t blw ff steam - a vent (发泄) sessin with a friend, a lng run, r even a few runds f bxing are cmmn ptins. But, accrding t new
research, this actually isn’t the best way t cpe with anger. These activities can have the ppsite effect.
A study published in Clinical Psychlgy Review shws that mindfulness activities, such as yga, meditatin, and deep breathing, are much mre effective in reducing anger. Sphie
Kjærvik, an expert at Virginia Cmmnwealth University, led the study at Ohi State University. She was inspired by the rise in ppularity f rage rms, which prmte smashing things as a way t cpe with anger. “I wanted t disprve the thery f expressing anger as a way f cping with it,” she said.
Kjærvik and her team analyzed ver 150 studies invlving 10,189 participants f different backgrunds. The analysis was guided by the Schachter-Singer tw-factr thery, which states
that emtins are guided by physilgical arusal (激活) and cgnitive assessment.
Kjærvik wanted t see hw arusal levels affect peple’s abilities t cpe with anger. The team analyzed activities that increased arusal, such as hitting a bag, jgging, cycling, and
swimming, versus arusal-decreasing activities.
They discvered that mindfulness activities like deep breathing, relaxatin, meditatin, slw-flw yga, prgressive muscle relaxatin, and taking a timeut all decreased anger levels.
“I think it’s really imprtant t break the myth that if yu’re angry yu shuld blw ff
steam - get it ff yur chest,” says Brad Bushman, a prfessr at Ohi State University. “Venting anger might sund like a gd idea, but there’s nt a shred f scientific evidence t supprt
catharsis (宣泄) thery. T reduce anger, it is better t engage in activities that decrease arusal levels.”
While these findings might cntradict ppular instincts, the best apprach is t use the same strategies we adpt t cmbat stress. “Prgressive muscle relaxatin and general relaxatin might be as effective as mindfulness and meditatin,” Kjærvik says. “The same strategies that wrk fr
stress als wrk fr anger.”
32 .What was the main purpse f Sphie Kjærvik’s study?
A .T prmte the Schachter-Singer tw-factr thery.
B .T cmpare different physical activities in reducing anger.
C .T challenge the idea that expressing anger can manage anger.
D .T cnfirm the functin f rage rms in cping with anger.
33 .Which is crrect accrding t the discvery f the study?
A .Rage rms wrk in releasing anger.
B .Reducing arusal helps t alleviate anger.
C .Arusal plays the rle as an anger extinguisher.
D .Deep breathing and meditatin can bst arusal.
34 .What is Brad Bushman’s attitude twards catharsis thery?
A .Supprtive. B .Neutral. C .Indifferent. D .Skeptical.
35 .What might be the best title fr the passage?
A .Venting Anger: the Brken Myth fr Anger Management
B .Mindfulness Activities: an Alternative t Reducing Anger
C .Arusal Increase: Mindfulness Activities Outperfrming Venting
D .Managing Emtins: Physical Activities as an Effective Apprach
