Activity: Shw students sme pictures f envirnmental pllutin caused by the use f nn - renewable energy, such as black - smke - emitting factries and smg - cvered cities. Then ask them sme questins like “What d yu think causes these envirnmental prblems?” and “Hw des the use f nn - renewable energy affect ur lives and the envirnment?”.
Design Intent: This activity can aruse students' interest and attentin at the beginning f the class. By shwing the negative impacts f nn - renewable energy, it can stimulate students' curisity abut renewable energy and lay a fundatin fr the fllwing teaching cntent.
Knwledge Presentatin (10 minutes)
Activity: Use PPT t intrduce different types f renewable energy. Fr each type, shw pictures and shrt vides t illustrate, such as the Three Grges Dam fr hydrpwer, wind turbines fr wind energy, slar panels fr slar energy, gethermal pwer plants fr gethermal energy, and crn fields fr bifuels. Explain their wrking principles simply and intrduce the English expressins related t them, like “hydrpwer”, “wind turbine”, “slar panel”, “gethermal energy” and “bifuel”. Then present sme examples f different cuntries using renewable energy, fr example, “China is the cuntry that makes the mst electricity frm hydrpwer. The Three Grges Dam is the biggest dam in the wrld. It tk mre than 10 years t build.”
Design Intent: Visual materials can help students understand abstract scientific knwledge mre easily. Presenting knwledge in English can directly imprve students' English learning in the cntext f crss - curricular cntent.
Practice (15 minutes)
Activity: Give students a reading passage abut hw different cuntries use renewable energy. The passage cntains details abut the applicatin f different renewable energy surces in varius cuntries. Let students read the passage carefully and then answer sme questins, such as “Which cuntry makes the mst electricity frm hydrpwer?” “What is the advantage f using gethermal energy in Iceland?”. After that, ask students t summarize the main idea f each paragraph.
Design Intent: This reading activity can train students' reading cmprehensin ability. By answering questins and summarizing paragraphs, students can better understand the cntent f the passage, extract key infrmatin, and at the same time, review the knwledge f renewable energy intrduced befre.
Prductin (10 minutes)
Activity: Divide students int grups f fur r five. Pse the fllwing discussin tpics: “What kinds f renewable energy are used in ur lcal area? What are the benefits f using them?” “What challenges d yu think renewable energy develpment faces in ur area?”. Each grup is required t have a discussin and chse a representative t reprt the grup's discussin results later.
Design Intent: Grup discussin can cultivate students' cperatin ability and critical thinking ability. By discussing lcal situatins, students can cnnect the learned knwledge with real life, which is cnducive t a deeper understanding f renewable energy and als imprves their English cmmunicatin ability in grup interactin.
Summary and Hmewrk (5 minutes)
Activity: Summarize the key pints f this class, including different types f renewable energy, their applicatins in different cuntries, and the imprtance f renewable energy. Then assign hmewrk: ask students t write a shrt passage abut the renewable energy they are mst interested in, intrducing its characteristics, advantages, and hw it is used in a certain cuntry r regin.
Design Intent: Summarizing helps students review and cnslidate the knwledge learned in class. The writing hmewrk can further imprve students' English writing ability and their understanding f renewable energy.
