Last Octber I was n a diving hliday in the Philippines with seven ther advanced divers.
I dived ff the bat slwly sinking t abut 20m.
After nearly 45 minutes, the sund f my breathing was drwned ut by a lw rumble like an engine and I felt deep pwerful vibratins (震动) as if a big bat was passing verhead. The
instructr and I bth swam next t each ther, staying clse t the side f the reef (礁石), because the situatin felt extremely sinister.
Then the vibratin, became s intense that I culd feel it in my bnes and then the sund
turned int a deafening rar. Suddenly, a few meters belw us, breaks began frming and the sand was sucked dwn. That’s when I gt what it was. The nise was the sund f the earth splintering pen and grinding against itself.
The instructr and I held hands and lked int each ther’s eyes, and I felt cmfrted by his presence. My bdy went n high alert, ready t react. But I had n pwer ver whatever this was. The nly ptin was t stay very still and let it d whatever it’s ging t d.
It tk enrmus willpwer t resist the urge t swim t the surface, which was nt sensible as the situatin n the surface at that time was ambiguus with ptential threats pending. Sn we saw ther divers.
The sund and vibratin lasted nly tw r three minutes. We all held hands t avid
decmpressin sickness (潜水病), which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief t see all the divers safe.
Back n the bat, we rushed t check the news and discvered we had witnessed a huge
earthquake, measuring 7.2 n the Richter scale. It released mre energy than 30 Hirshima bmbs,
thugh it seemed that we were nt at the epicenter (震中). I was high and felt extremely lucky nt because f my recent survival miracle, but t have experienced nature at its mst stunning and its mst frightening mment.
24 .The underlined wrd in the secnd paragraph is clsest in meaning t ________.
      A .urgent B .dangerus C .cnfusing D .harmnius
25 .Why didn’t the authr rise t the surface befre the vibratin stpped?
A .Because he was very afraid f big waves.
B .Because he had lst all the strengths t swim.
C .Because he tried t avid unexpected danger abve.
D .Because he culd sense the unclear water situatin.
26 .Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE accrding t the passage?
A .At the beginning f the event, a big bat passed by causing big vibratin.
B .All the divers used the reef as the prtectin against the vilent vibratin.
C .Pwerless t fight nature, all the divers tried t cperate and help each ther.
D .I felt relieved as the instructr was experienced in handling situatins like this.
27 .Why did the authr feel frtunate n the bat?
A .Because he culd witness a rare natural phenmenn.
B .Because he finally survived a huge earthquake.
C .Because he was nt at the epicenter f the earthquake.
D .Because he didn’t suffer frm decmpressin sickness.

Despite decades f indr smking bans and restrictins which serve t prtect
nn-smking peple frm expsure t secnd-hand smke, a new research frm Drexel University suggests that third-hand smke, the chemical residue (残留物) frm cigarette smke that attaches itself t anything and anyne nearby, can make its way int the air and spread thrugh buildings
      where n ne is smking.
Peter DeCarl, an atmspheric chemist at Drexel, revealed the new expsure rute fr third-hand smke—thrugh aersl particles (气溶胶颗粒) which are cmmn particles
suspended in the air—they cme frm varius surces and are harmful t health. “In an empty
classrm, where smking has nt been allwed, we fund that 29 percent f the entire indr
aersl mass cntained third-hand smke chemical species. This shcked us and raised many
questins abut hw that much third-hand smke culd cntinue t exist in a nn-smking rm,” he says.
T investigate the cause f this surprising finding, DeCarl and his cwrkers first made
cigarette smke flw int a Pyrex cntainer, allwing the smke chemicals t stay inside. Then
they made any residual smke flw ut f the cntainer befre pulling utdr air thrugh it t
clear ut any secnd-hand smke. After a day, purified utdr air was passed thrugh the
cntainer and the researchers measured the chemical cmpsitin f the aersl particles it
acquired and cmpared it t utdr air that hadn’t passed thrugh the cntainer. They fund a 13 percent increase in third-hand smke chemical species in the air that went thrugh the Pyrex
cntainer, which meant that, thugh it seemed as thugh the smke had cleared, a chemical residue still existed and fund a way t attach itself t passing aersl particles.
This means that the discvery was by n means unique t that classrm; in fact, it’s likely quite a widespread phenmenn. “While mst peple expect that they’ ll be expsed t air
pllutin frm cars, r ther chemicals in lw cncentratins when they’ re utside—they tend t think that they’ re escaping all that when they step indrs,” DeCarl says. “Understanding that we are cnstantly expsed t these chemicals, even in ur wrkplaces, is a challenge t
      cmmunicate t the public.”
28 .What des the research shw?
A .Third-hand smke spreads widely. B .Smking bans functin well.
C .Smke residue exists temprarily. D .Indr smking is strictly restricted.
29 .Why was the discvery in the classrm surprising?
A .Smking was permitted there. B .New aersl particles appeared there.
C .Chemical species there raised a debate. D .Partial aersl particles there carried smke.
30 .Hw did the researchers carry ut the study?
A .By bserving chemicals in the lab. B .By cmparing indr and utdr air.
C .By mdeling third-hand smke expsure. D .By measuring air quality in cntainers.
31 .What des DeCarl imply in the last paragraph?
A .Peple face new wrking challenges.
B .Their discvery is against expectatins.
C .Smke expsure raises widespread cncerns.
D .Staying indrs frees peple frm air pllutin.
      D
A theme at this year’s Wrld Ecnmic Frum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the
perceived need t “speed up breakthrughs in research and technlgy.” Sme f this framing was mtivated by the climate emergency, sme by the pprtunities and challenges presented by
generative artificial intelligence. Yet in varius cnversatins, it seemed t be taken fr granted
that t address the wrld’s prblems, scientific research needs t mve faster. The WEF mindset is similar t the Silicn Valley dictate — t mve fast and break things. But what if the thing being brken is science? Or public trust?
In recent years we’ve seen imprtant papers, written by utstanding scientists and published in celebrated jurnals, retracted because f questinable data r methds, hence a questin: Are
schlars at supercmpetitive places such as Harvard and Stanfrd rushing t publish rather than taking the time t d their wrk right?
It’s impssible t answer this questin scientifically because there’s n scientific definitin f what cnstitutes “rushing.” But there’s little dubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendus pressure t prduce results — and a lt f them —
      quickly.
The prblem is nt unique t the U. S. In Eurpe, frmal research assessments — which are used t allcate (分配) future funding — have fr years judged academic departments largely n the quantity f their utput. A recent refrm urging an emphasis n quality ver quantity allwed that the existing system had created “cunterincentives.”
Gd science takes time. Mre than 50 years passed between the 1543 publicatin f
Cpernicus’s On the Revlutins fthe Heavenly Spheres. And it tk just abut half a century
fr gelgists and gephysicists t accept gephysicist Alfred Wegener’s idea f cntinental drift.
There’s plenty f evidence that scientists and ther schlars are pushing results ut far faster than they used t. Cnsider the sheer vlume f academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at mre than seven millin a year, cmpared with fewer
than a millin as recently as 1980. Sme f this grwth is driven by mre scientists and mre c-authrship f papers, but the numbers als suggest that the research wrld has priritized
quantity ver quality. Researchers may need t slw dwn if we are t prduce knwledge wrthy f trust.
32 .WEF meeting in Switzerland advcated that ________.
A .WEF and Silicn Valley reach an agreement t mve fast
B .public trust in science is nt suppsed t be easily brken
C .researchers need t achieve breakthrughs mre rapidly
D .climate emergency and AI push scientific research hard
33 .Which f the fllwing examples fails t prve that gd science takes time?
      A .High-prfile schlars’ tremendus utput. B .Publicatin f Cpernicus’s thery.
C .Retractin f imprtant papers. D .Acceptance f the idea f cntinental drift.
34 .The underlined wrd “cunterincentives” in para. 5 prbably means ________.
A .measures t increase quantities f utput B .cntradictry mtives fr future funding
C .rewards fr leading universities’ research D .discuragements f high quality papers
35 .Which f the fllwing is best title f the passage?
A .WEF Cincides with Silicn Valley B .Truble in the Fast Lane
C .Chice between Quantity and Quality D .Cllapse f Public Trust

At the cncert, hwever, we faced an unexpected prblem. My eldest was already taller than me; my yungest, n the ther hand, was nt s tall at the time. This meant that when the cncert started and the peple in the rw in frnt decided t stay standing, he culd nt see past them, nly catching sight f the stage between their bdies. It was bvius that he was
disappinted. It was tearing my heart that he was nt able t enjy the shw, and I, f curse, culd nt either.
I did ask the grup in frnt if they were ging t stay standing, and the answer was a
definite yes. They weren't ding anything wrng, s as much as I was disappinted, I understd that they had paid their mney t and wanted t enjy themselves.

根据 Hw It Wrks 部分“Brrw a bk and return it n time; get 1 reading stamp.(借一本书并按时归还,可获得 1 枚阅读印章)”可知,Emma 按时归还了4 本书,可获得4 枚常规印章。根据 Special Bnus Stamps 部分“Glden Stamp: Finish any bk frm the “20 Classic Reads” list; Inkwell Stamp: Write a shrt review (50-100 wrds) in the app; E-Reader
Stamp: Brrw and finish an e-bk; Attentin: Only ne special stamp per bk, even if it
根据 Stamp Sets & Rewards"部分“Wisdm Set (12 stamps): Chse a new bk fr the library + yur name n the “Reader’s Wall”(智慧套装(12 枚印章):为图书馆挑选一本新书+你的名字登上“读者墙”)”可知,收集 12 枚智慧套装印章后,学生可以获得为图书馆挑选新书的权利。故选 D。

After nearly 45 minutes, the sund f my breathing was
drwned ut by a lw rumble like an engine and I felt deep pwerful vibratins (震动) as if a big bat was passing verhead. The instructr and I bth swam next t each ther, staying clse t the side f the reef
It tk enrmus willpwer t resist the urge t swim t the surface, which was nt sensible as the situatin n the surface at that time was ambiguus with ptential
根据第六段“The sund and vibratin lasted nly tw r three minutes. We all held hands t avid decmpressin sickness (潜水病), which can be fatal. When up, it was a huge relief t see all the divers safe.(声音和震动只持续了两三分钟。
I was high and felt extremely lucky nt because f my recent survival miracle, but t have experienced nature at its mst stunning and its mst frightening
故选 A。

Despite decades f indr smking bans and restrictins
which serve t prtect nn-smking peple frm expsure t secnd-hand smke, a new research
frm Drexel University suggests that third-hand smke, the chemical residue (残留物)frm
cigarette smke that attaches itself t anything and anyne nearby, can make its way int the air
and spread thrugh buildings where n ne is smking.
故选 A。
In an empty classrm, where smking has nt been allwed, we fund that 29 percent f the entire indr aersl mass cntained third-hand smke chemical
species. This shcked us and raised many questins abut hw that much third-hand smke culd cntinue t exist in a nn-smking rm,” he says.
T investigate the cause f this surprising finding, DeCarl and his cwrkers first made cigarette smke flw int a Pyrex cntainer, allwing the smke
chemicals t stay inside. Then they made any residual smke flw ut f the cntainer befre
pulling utdr air thrugh it t clear ut any secnd-hand smke. After a day, purified utdr
air was passed thrugh the cntainer and the researchers measured the chemical cmpsitin f

      cntainer.
根据最后一段内容“This means that the discvery was by n means unique t that classrm; in fact, it’s likely quite a widespread phenmenn. “While mst peple expect that they’ ll be expsed t air pllutin frm cars, r ther chemicals in lw cncentratins when they’
re utside - they tend t think that they’ re escaping all that when they step indrs,” DeCarl
says. “Understanding that we are cnstantly expsed t these chemicals, even in ur wrkplaces,
      is a challenge t cmmunicate t the public.”

根据第一段“A theme at this year’s Wrld Ecnmic Frum (WEF) meeting in Switzerland was the perceived need t “speed up breakthrughs in research and technlgy.”(今
It’s impssible t answer this questin scientifically because
there’s n scientific definitin f what cnstitutes “rushing.” But there’s little dubt that we live in a culture where academics at leading universities are under tremendus pressure t prduce results
      — and a lt f them — quickly.(要从科学的角度来回答这个问题是不可能的,因为对于“匆忙”这一概念并没有一个科学的定义。 故选 A。
根据第四段“The prblem is nt unique t the U. S. In Eurpe, frmal research assessments — which are used t allcate (分配) future funding — have fr years judged
academic departments largely n the quantity f their utput. A recent refrm urging an emphasis n quality ver quantity allwed that the existing system had created “cunterincentives.”(这个问题并非美国所独有。
There’s plenty f circumstantial evidence that scientists and
ther schlars are pushing results ut far faster than they used t. Cnsider the sheer vlume f
academic papers being published these days. One recent study put the number at mre than seven millin a year, cmpared with fewer than a millin as recently as 1980. Sme f this grwth is

Have yu ever walked away frm a cnversatin with the sinking feeling that yu said t much? Nt because yu were implite r incnsiderate — but because yu tried t
Over-explaining happens ften in ur daily life. This behavir riginated in early survival strategies. Fr thse raised in emtinally unpredictable husehlds, clarity may be a

38 .根据空前“Regardless f rigin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying t justify ur right t take up space, t say n r t make chices thers might nt like.(无论起源如何,这种模式都是相同的:我们花费不必要的精力,试图证明自己有权利占据空间、说“不”或做出别人可能不喜欢的选择。)”
      39.根据空后“Yu spend less fit in practicing, defending, r recvering, and yu needn’t always react t thers' discmfrt.
Yu als start attracting a different kind f relatinship. It is based nt n
及空后“Yu begin healing the part f yu that believed lve had t be earned thrugh explanatin.(你开始疗愈内心那个认为“爱需要通过解释来争取”的部分。)” 故选 A 项。
