The mst cmmn mistakes made by British peple are spelling mistakes (21 percent), fllwed clsely by apstrphe(撇号) placement (16 percent) and the misuse f cmmas (16 percent). Mre than half f British adults are nt cnfident f their cmmand f spelling and grammar. Furthermre, arund three quarters f adults rely n the emji t cmmunicate.
The use f emji has affected the English culture s much that the “Oxfrd Dictinaries Wrd f the Year” in 2015 wasn’t actually a wrd at all — it was the “face with tears f jy” emji. That shws just what a great effect the emji has.
Meanwhile, research earlier shwed that using an emji in emails when delivering bad news can sften the blw. It culd help wrkplace cmmunicatin, even thugh it culd be seen as unprfessinal.
The study fund that the emji clearly increased the level f understanding in a message. Emticns like the “smiling face” r “face with tears f jy” imitated (模仿) expressins and gestures and added a new layer f meaning. Interestingly, this nly wrked fr a psitive emji. Over 500 millin peple visit American public lands each year, creating many chances t harm wild places. “When yu lk at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head f the Leave N Trace Center in Clrad, an rganizatin aimed at minimizing human impact n nature.
Fd waste takes a lng time t break dwn, especially in certain areas. “It takes much lnger fr an apple cre t rt in a desert than in a frest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University f Utah. Leaving waste intrduces animals t an unnatural diet and alters their behavir with smetimes disastrus results. Bears wh taste garbage and becme a threat t humans may have t be put dwn. “Bears can get used t unnatural fd in three weeks,” says Watts. “Everyne lses in this case.”
Bilgical waste is als prblematic. Dg waste brings new bacteria int the ecsystem and scares away deer. Meanwhile, human waste and tilet paper intrduces dangerus bacteria int water surces.
In natinal parks, trails (小路) are designed t avid sensitive areas. Stepping ff the trail, even fr a quick pht, can scare wildlife away. Impacts frm many visitrs result in lng-term damage t nature and wildlife. But peple dn’t think f that when they see the perfect pht pprtunity. “It’s just such a hard thing t resist,” says Blye. The risk t sensitive ecsystems isn’t bvius. “It’s easy t think, h, there’s wildflwers ver there. I shuldn’t step n that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecsystems full f micrscpic rganisms essential t desert life prvide many benefits, including reducing the risk f ersin (侵蚀) and helping absrb rainfall, and can take hundreds f years t return t its riginal state.
8. What des Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes.”?

Blue light glasses gained ppularity ver the past few years with the idea that they prtect ur eyes against screen usage — but a new analysis shws a different result.
“We fund there may be n shrt-term advantages with using blue-light filtering spectacle lenses t reduce visual fatigue assciated with cmputer use, cmpared t nn-blue-light filtering lenses,” said Laura Dwnie. “It is als currently unclear whether these lenses affect visin quality r sleep-related utcmes, and n cnclusins culd be drawn abut any ptential effects n retinal (视网膜的) health in the lnger term. Peple shuld be aware f these findings when deciding whether t purchase these spectacles.”
The studies they reviewed ranged in size and length, with a span f as few as five t as many as 156 participants assessed ver different perids, frm less than ne day t five weeks. The authrs said mre research with lnger fllw-ups in mre diverse ppulatins are needed t better assess any ptential effects.

Earlier this year, Dr Rbert Jhnsn said, “I wuld have patients cming in saying they just rdered blue-blcking glasses frm the Internet fr their daughter and what was my pinin. This blue-blcking situatin has been bgus basically frm the get-g... It’s ne f the absurdities that cme frm advertising.”
Instead f shelling ut mney fr special shades, hwever, experts advise taking screen breaks. They recmmend small breaks away frm screens every 20 minutes. During that break, lk int the distance at an bject at least 20 feet away r farther, fr 20 secnds r mre. Als shut yur eyes fr 20 secnds during the break. Jhnsn als ges by the “20-20-20 rule”. “Fr every 20 minutes, lk away in excess f 20 feet fr 20 secnds,” he said. “That will relax yur fcusing mechanism that will give yur eyes a break and that will make yu mre cmfrtable.”
