My idea that trains are rmantic may cme frm the fact that my husband and I tk the train n ur hneymn, spending extra mney t eat in the dining car, and lking ut f the windw as the desert scenery slid past.
Nw, when I make a trip, I always fly r drive, and trains are nt a very imprtant part f my life. The researchers drew a cnclusin that rphaned (成为孤儿) elephants wuld be mre stressed ut than nn-rphans.There's a lt f evidence that the mther-child bnd helps reduce stress in animals, which has been demnstrated previusly in rats and birds, says the study leader Jenna Parker.Elephants have cmplicated scial structures and deep family bnds.Because rphaned elephants in the same regin die at a higher rate than elephants with living mthers,it seemed like a n-brainer that surviving rphans wuld be stressed ut.

Parker recalls tw rphans in the study,Frida and Rthk. "Frida had a nn-functinal left ear and Rthk had a nn-functinal right ear," and they were inseparable, she says. "It was as thugh they had at least ne gd set f ears as lng as they were tgether!" The findings als fit with previus scial research in African elephants,Parker says. "Orphans increase interactin with their age mates after their mther's death." She ntes that dminance is structured by age in elephants:Older elephants may utrank yunger elephants when it cmes t fd,fr example, but elephants f the same age are generally equals.
With human-wildlife cnflict and drught threats t elephants in the regin, the findings published tday in Cmmunicatins Bilgy ffer a new insight int hw having a strng fellw grup may cntribute t elephants' survival. This infrmatin culd als help recvery facilities that take in rphaned elephants set the animals up fr a successful future in the wild — releasing them in large grups f bnded fellws,fr example. "The bttm line here is that elephants need elephants," says Parker. "And when the wrst happens, like lsing a mther, sme find new ways t survive and grw happily."
