There are mre than 3,000 kinds f cicadas,which fall int tw types:annual cicadas,which emerge (出现)every year,and peridical(周期)cicadas,which spend mst f their lives undergrund and nly emerge nce every few years.The 17-year cicada is ne f the peridical cicadas with the lngest knwn insect life cycle.Every 17 years,like clckwrk,they appear.Shrtly after hatching(孵化)frm its egg,a 17- year-ld cicada nymph(若虫)digs dwn int the grund,where it spends—as its name suggests—the first 17 years f its life.When it cmes ut frm the grund,it lives nly fur t six mre weeks—just lng enugh t lay eggs,and the cycle starts all ver again.
Peridical cicadas dn’t spend their years sleeping undergrund.Instead,they are active in their wingless nymph frms,digging tunnels(隧道).
Thugh nt prven,many scientists believe that the peridical cicada has a mlecular clck(分子钟) inside its bdy that ntes the passing f years thrugh envirnmental signs.As trees g thrugh their seasnal cycles,the sap(汁)f their rts (根)changes.And when cicada nymphs feed n this sap,they are likely t pick up signs f the passing f time.The 17th trees' seasnal cycle gives the nymphs their final sign:it's time t emerge.
When the cicada nymphs cme ut frm their undergrund hmes depends n temperature.After their 17 years are up,the cicadas wait fr the perfect temperature befre making the jurney t the surface—when the sil abut 8 inches(abut 20 cm)
undergrund reaches 64F,r abut 18℃.This means that cicadas will appear at different times in different parts f the wrld:the sil in ne place may reach the ideal temperature befre the sil in anther.But nce that temperature is reached,all the cicadas in the area will feel it and make the jurney t the surface tgether.
When they emerge,the cicadas aren't yet in their adult frm.They're still nymphs,and they remain s until they mlt(蜕皮)fr the final time.Once their fresh exskeletns(外骨骼)have hardened,they take t the trees with their new-fund wings,and the males begin their lud mating calls in rder t attract females.Then females lay eggs in dry branches.After that,bth males and females die.
