When yu see smene absrbed in an academic nvel n the train r psing with a philsphical bk n scial media, yu shuldn’t autmatically assume they are reading the bk.
It’s called “reading fr shw” because the “reader” wants “everyne t knw” they read, wrte Alaina Dempuls in The Guardian. They’ re letting thers knw they have the “taste and fcus” t “pick up a physical bk”.
Sarah Manavis in The New Statesman said this phenmenn started in 2021. At that time, bk clubs led by celebrities became ppular. Plus, BkTk-the part f a scial media cmmunity fr prmting and talking abut ppular nvels-turned favrite bks int “trendy items”.
Peple think BkTk is abut shwing ff. “Trendy bks” get ppular nt because f the “quality f the stries” but because they make peple lk “mre fashinable and smart”, And when reading becmes a cmpetitin-s many users shw ff that they’ve read mre than 35 bks in ne mnth, just t lk like they read a lt-quality becmes less imprtant. What matters mre is “prving yu’re a vracius ‘reader’”.
Using bks t shw ff n scial media isn’t new. But what’s new is that scial media penly supprts the idea f bks as “an accessry, nt an art”. This trend brings a risk: Publishers may put mst f their effrt int bks that “lk gd n scial media”.
But there’s ne clear fact: When bks get ppular nline, mre bks are sld. In 2023,669 millin physical bks were sld-the highest number ever. Als, mre peple visited UK libraries that year.
Dempuls said ne f life’s “simplest jys” is still “getting lst in a stry” and “frgetting the wrld arund yu” — withut “wrrying abut what thers think f yu”. Just enjy the stry. Many peple still d that. S instead f criticizing “reading fr shw”, next time yu see smene with a bk in a cffee shp r park, leave them alne. Because “this has nthing t d with yu” — they’re just “enjying the mment”.
8. Why d sme peple d “reading fr shw”?
A. T make bk clubs ppular.B. T help thers frm reading habits.
C. T make themselves lk gd scially.D. T tell peple literature is imprtant.
9. What des the underlined wrd “vracius” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Slw.B. Eager.C. Selective.D. Occasinal.
10. What risk des turning bks int accessries bring?
A. Online reading may replace physical bks.
B. Fewer physical bks will be sld.
C. Bk clubs may nt welcme cmmn peple.
D. Bks with meaningful cntent may be ignred.
11. Accrding t Dempuls, hw shuld we treat peple reading in public?
A. Ask them t read at hme.B. Help them chse better bks.
C. Stp them frm psting nline.D. Respect them and dn’t disturb them.
D
Micrplastics have been detected in human brains at far higher cncentratins than in ther bdily rgans — and levels are increasing, having risen 50 percent in eight years.
This is the cnclusin f a team f researchers frm the University f New Mexic (UNM), wh said the findings shuld trigger alarm. “This really changes the landscape. It makes it s much mre persnal,” UNM prfessr Matthew Campen said in a statement. “I have nt encuntered a single human being wh says, ‘There’s a bunch f plastic in my brain and I’m ttally cl with that’.”
Micrplastic (smaller than 5 millimeters in size) and nanplastic (under 0.001 millimeters) pllutin have becme cmmn in the envirnment and can get int the fd we eat. These plastic bits have been fund in varius bdily rgans — including the kidney, liver — althugh nt at such cncentratins as nw seen in the brain, the team said.
The researchers identified 12 different types f plastic within samples cllected frm the s-called frntal crtex (前额叶) — the brain regin fund abve and behind the eyes that had been linked t varius capabilities frm abstract thinking thrugh t mtr functin. “We start thinking that maybe these plastics blck bld flw in small bld tube,” Campen said. “There’s the ptential that these nanmaterials interfere with the cnnectins between axns (轴突) in the brain. They culd als be a seed fr gruping f prteins invlved in dementia (痴呆). We just dn’t knw.”
Campen said mst f the micrplastics that end up in ur bdies arrive there via fd — meat in particular, as cmmercial meat prductin cncentrates plastics acrss the fd chain. “The way we irrigate fields with water cntaining plastic, we assume that the plastic builds up there,” he said. “We feed thse crps t ur farm animals. We take the animal waste and put it back n the field.”
Micrplastic and nanplastic pllutin in the envirnment is certain t grw, the researchers warn — fr even if we were t cease plastic prductin tmrrw, existing plastic wuld still be arund t break dwn int tiny and then super tiny pieces.
12. Why des the authr cite Prfessr Matthew Campen’s wrds in paragraph 2?
A. T emphasize the plastics impacts n individuals.
B. T explain the surce f plastics in human rgans.
C. T trigger a quick respnse frm different researchers.
D. T advcate fr reductin measures in plastic prductin.
13. What might nanplastics in the brain lead t?
A. Cntinuus brain aging.B. Immediate memry lss.
C. Disturbed neural bnds.D. Cmplete bld tube blckage.
14. What can be inferred abut cmmercial meat prductin?
A. It relies n plluted irrigatin.B. It remves plastics cmpletely.
C. It reduces the waste f crps.D. It accumulates plastics in fd chain.
15. What des the last paragraph’s warning imply?
A. Nanplastics is less harmful.B. Anti-pllutin effrts are effective.
C. Existing plastics still pse a threat.D. Stpping prductin slves pllutin.
