Fr the past hur, Maggie, Travis and Lucy had been lcked inside a rm decrated like a mad scientist’s labratry. Tgether they decded (破译) a secret language and slved a difficult maths prblem. The last challenge, hwever, stpped them. The key t the dr was trapped in a blck f ice.

“Isn’t clth an insulatr (隔热材料)?” Lucy asked. She tried t remember what she had learned in science class. “Heat always flws frm warm bjects t cld nes. The heat in the air will finally melt the ice, but we need t find smething that will help heat mve frm the air t the ice mre quickly.”
      “What abut glass?” Maggie asked.
“Glass is als an insulatr. It keeps heat frm mving,” Lucy said. Then she nticed a large metal tray (金属托盘) acrss the rm. “This might wrk!”
Lucy put the blck f ice nt the tray. Everybdy’s eyes mved between the clck and the ice. Wuld they be able t free the key in time?
At last, the key lay in the water n the tray. The three friends rushed ut f the rm in the last minute.

      Being Authritative (权威的) Parents
Phrases like “tiger mm” and “helicpter parent” have made their way int everyday language.
Many f us find urselves drawn t the idea that with just a bit mre parental hard wrk and effrt, we might turn ut children with bright futures. But is there anything wrng with a kind f “verparenting style”?
Parental invlvement has a lng histry f being studied. Many f the studies, carried ut by Diana Baumrind, a famus psychlgist at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley, have fund that a gd parent is the ne wh is invlved and reacts t her child in a psitive way, wh sets high expectatins but gives her child independence. These “authritative parents” appear t hit the sweet spt f parental invlvement and generally raise children wh d better academically, psychlgically and scially than children whse parents are nt strict and less invlved, r cntrlling and mre invlved. Why is this parenting style s successful?
Authritative parents actually help imprve mtivatin in their children. Carl Dweck, a scial psychlgist at Stanfrd University, has dne research that shws why authritative parents raise mre mtivated children. In a typical experiment, Dr. Dweck takes yung children int a rm and asks them t slve a simple puzzle. Mst d s with little difficulty. But then Dr. Dweck tells sme, but nt all, f the kids hw clever they are. As it turns ut, the children wh are nt tld they’re smart are mre mtivated t slve increasingly difficult puzzles. They als shw higher levels f cnfidence and shw greater prgress in puzzle-slving.
As the experiment suggests, praising children’s talents and abilities seems t shake their cnfidence. Dealing with mre difficult puzzles carries the risk f lsing ne’s status as “smart”. Dr. Dweck’s wrk strngly supprts that f Dr. Baumrind, wh als fund that reasnably supprting a child’s independence and limiting interference (干涉) causes better academic (学术的) and emtinal results.
The central task f grwing up is t develp a sense f self that is independent and cnfident. If yu treat yur yung child wh is just learning t walk as if she can’t walk, yu reduce her cnfidence. Allwing children t make mistakes is ne f the greatest challenges f parenting. It is easier when they are yung. The ptential mistakes carry greater risks, and part f being a parent is reducing risk fr ur children.
      24.Accrding t the passage, a “tiger mm”______ .
      A. helps her children realize their dreams
      B. pays clse attentin t her children’s experiences
      C. places reasnable expectatins n her children
      D. speaks her children’s everyday language
25.The example f the children ding the puzzles suggests that ______.
      A. a gd game plays a big rle in training yung minds
      B. bright children usually shw less cnfidence in difficult games
      C. puzzle-slving can give children the mtivatin they need
      D. verpraising makes children less mtivated and cnfident
26.The last paragraph tells us that ______.
      A. children shuld nt be given much freedm
      B. parents shuld nt increase the risk f challenging
      C. children shuld crrect mistakes with the help f their parents
      D. parents shuld allw their children t learn frm mistakes
      C
Clse yur eyes. Try t bring back a memry f taking an exam in yur wrst subject with yur strictest teacher. Prbably yu remember lking at the paper, feeling yu didn’t knw any f the answers. Yur heart was beating surprisingly, yu think f that experience as all bad, a lng-lasting discmfrt.
But maybe it didn’t have t be that way. A paper in Nature reprts that a ne-time nline mindset exercise(思维模式训练)imprved the way yung peple thught abut stressful events and their uncmfrtable respnses(反应). The exercise is based n tw mindsets: first, ability is nt fixed but can be imprved with effrt and supprt; secnd, bdy respnses t stress can be helpful. As students wrk thrugh the exercise themselves, they read infrmatin abut hw the brain builds n experience and hw the bdy uses stress——a fast-beating heart sends mre bld t the brain t help yu think. The exercise als suggests ways t succeed in stressful situatins, and it asks students t write abut what they might d differently next time.
Researchers invited thusands f high schl and cllege students t take the exercise. The findings shw that this exercise appears t be able t change ur understanding f the wrld arund us and ur respnses t it. Cmpared with thse wh didn’t take the exercise, students wh tk part thught abut stress differently, turning it int a way f energizing the mtivatin(激活动力)t achieve a gal. What’s mre, the exercise changed their bdy respnses fr the better, preparing the bdy t respnd t events as a challenge rather than a threat(威胁).
“Difficulty and struggle are yur friends,” says Christpher Bryan, a scial psychlgist and ne f the researchers. “Thse experiences dn’t feel gd in the mment, but it’s the path anyne wh became truly excellent at anything had t travel.”
The exercise culd be put int further use. It culd be specially made fr athletes r ffice wrkers in the future. Once it has been fully tested, the exercise culd be ready fr use in high schls and clleges natinwide.
The researchers dn’t just want yung peple t rethink abut stress; they want adults t rethink abut yung peple. “Our studies suggest that we might nt teach yung peple that they are t weak t get ver difficulties, but that we might, instead, prvide them with resurces and guidance s that yung peple can shw their skills and creativity in dealing with big prblems,” they write in the paper.
27.Accrding t Paragraph 2, the mindset exercise may help yu ________.
      A. frget abut yur stressful mments
      B. find ways t slw dwn yur heartbeat
      C. recrd what yu have been thrugh befre
      D. understand hw the brain builds n experience
28.What can we learn abut the exercise?
      A. It is nw helping teenagers natinwide.
      B. It is especially helpful t ffice wrkers.
      C. It aims t help teenagers get better grades.
      D. It can change students’ respnses t events.
29.The writer wuld prbably agree that ________.
      A. difficulties are part f grwth fr yung peple
      B. mtivatin plays the key rle in achieving a gal
      C. teenagers are t weak t get thrugh difficulties
      D. adults shuld shw their skills and creativity first
30.What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
      A. T questin the influence f stress.
      B. T explain the imprtance f stress.
      C. T intrduce a way t lk at stress.
      D. T cmpare tw mindsets abut stress.
