Penelpe Panczuk recently went n a tw-hur tur knwn as Tky Tilet Shuttle t explre the city’s artistic public bathrms. Amng Japan’s mst-lved technlgical exprts in recent years are its tilets prduced by TOTO. The devices have cleansing sprays. heated seats, music, and mre. In respnse t this trend, the nnprfit Nippn Fundatin started the Tky Tilet Prject in 2020. It asked creatrs, including Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tada And, t develp new tilets. The gal was t imprve the functinality and artistry f 17 public tilets in the Shibuya district, making them mre welcming and enjyable fr users.
While the prject was nt intended as a turist attractin, Shibuya’s gvernment saw an pprtunity t draw visitrs t the area beynd its famus street crssing. The Tky Tilet Shuttle tur nw takes visitrs t nine unique public tilets, allwing visitrs t explre the less-visited parts f Shibuya while checking ut the tilets. This is a highlight fr visitrs.
“In the U. S. r France, where I riginally cme frm, yu just dn’t g,” Panczuk said f using public bathrms. She added that in Tky, the bathrms are extremely clean. It feels like a new discvery every time she visits. Turists pay $32.76 t visit nine different tilets in the Shibuya district,each with unique designs. On the Less Plateau (黄土高原) f nrthern China, arund 40 millin peple still live in traditinal caves called yadng, cmbining perfectly with the regin’s unique landscape.
These cave huses are built with vaulted (有拱顶的) rms and thick earthen walls. The entrances are decrated with beautiful wden windws. Inside, yu’ll find large, heated beds knwn as the kang, which prvide warmth during cld winters. Small tunnels cnnect the rms, creating a cmfrtable living space.
The design f yadng is clsely tied t the envirnment f the Less Plateau. The regin has a dry climate with strng winds, making abve-grund huses less practical. By cntrast, yadng are built int the earth, ffering prtectin frm bad weather. The sil in this area is thick and fine, making it easy t dig while prviding strng supprt fr the structure. This natural material als acts as excellent insulatin, keeping the hmes cl in summer and warm in winter. Additinally, because wd and ther building materials are little, yadng are a lw-cst and sustainable chice fr the lcal peple.
Yadng cme in different frms, each adapted t the lcal landscape. One type is the cliff-side yadng (靠崖式窑洞), which is carved directly int the hill-sides. These hmes have pen frnts that allw natural light and air t flw in. Anther type is the sunken yadng (下沉式窑洞), which is built by digging a large rectangular pit (矩形坑) int the grund. Rms are then carved int the walls f the pit, creating an undergrund curtyard. This design prvides extra insulatin and privacy. Finally, there are stand-alne yadng, which are built abve grund using materials like earth, stne and mud. These huses are cmmn in areas where digging int the earth is nt pssible.

A cuple Peter and Chris in their 60s have travelled 12,000 miles acrss 16 cuntries frm Britain t China — riding their bikes the entire way. Peter, 66, said the mment they finally had a lk at the famus Great Wall after a year and a half f cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”. At the jurney, the special pair didn’t fly hme but instead chse t bk a cabin (舱) inside a 400-meter-lng cntainer ship. The final part was a three-week vyage frm Singapre acrss the Indian Ocean and int the Mediterranean Sea befre arriving at Suthamptn.
“Yu never knw what the day is ging t bring. All yu knw is that yu are ging t get n yur bike and cycle. Every day is an adventure and every day is new. Overall, the experience is abslutely unbelievable,” Peter said. In the beginning Peter and Chris set ut t cycle frm Britain in January 2017 but were frced hme. They had cycled all the way t Hungary when Peter slipped n tiles (瓷砖) and brke his leg. After seven mnths f recvery, the cuple set ut again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in Nvember 2018.
