Visiting Anting Old Street made me rethink the stry f my jurney frm Türkiye t China. My majr 1 (intend) f cming was t get t knw China’s histry and culture mre deeply, and I knew that ding s wuld require me t experience life n its streets. My visit t this street in Shanghai seemed 2 (prve) this. Dating frm the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644), Anting Old Street is still lined with wrkshps prducing handicrafts, carvings and paintings, alng 3 antique shps.
Biking frm shp t shp, I stpped when I saw a grup dancing guangchangwu, a type f dance 4 (practice) in public squares acrss China. Peple in Türkiye are als very interested in dances. I remember when I first saw it here it made me feel at hme, 5 is prbably why I’m s fascinated by it. After watching the dancers, I cntinued my explratin, stpping clse t Yansi Bridge that 6 (build) in 1374. Sme friendly lcals tld me the bridge gets its name frm the Yanjing and Sijing rivers. The end f the street takes travelers even 7 (far) back in time, with the Puti Temple f the year 239. Walking thrugh the temple’s tree-lined grunds brings 8 sense f peace. Shanghai is 9 (true) an admirable city with a new surprise arund every crner. Over the years the city 10 (create) harmny between mdern life and its rich heritage full f histrical sites.
      Sectin B
Directins: Fill in each blank with a prper wrd chsen frm the bx. Each wrd can be used nly nce. Nte that there is ne wrd mre than yu need.
Britain appears t be in a mental-health crisis. In the past decade n Eurpean cuntry has seen a greater increase in the use f antidepressants(抗抑郁药); nw nly the Prtuguese and Icelanders are ppping mre f the 11 . Arund 4.5m Britns were in cntact with mental-health services in 2021-22, a rise f almst l m in five years.
There are a few reasns why Britns might be unhappier than their 12 . One glbal pll fund that teenagers in Britain were sme f the lneliest in the wrld, with few supprtive relatinships and a lw sense f purpse and meaning: all risk factrs fr pr mental health. Britain’s prest husehlds are als 13 ff than their equivalents in France and Germany, fr example, which makes them mre vulnerable t cnditins such as anxiety and depressin. And Britain’s health system can seem mre 14 than thse in mst ther rich cuntries. In England alne, sme 3.8 m are waiting fr mental-health treatment.
Thse factrs might explain why mre peple are 15 t medicatin. Anther reasn is increased awareness. Campaigns arund depressin and anxiety have been particularly successful in Britain. That is 16 a gd thing. A reductin in humiliatin (蒙羞) has encuraged mre peple t seek help. Taking antidepressants – r using mental-health services — has becme much mre acceptable.
But there is a 17 t this, as The Ecnmist recently reprted. Surveys suggest that Britns are increasingly 18 cmmn human emtins, such as stress and grief, as mental illnesses. “Yu’re ging t lse any sense f what mental illness is if yu start t 19 it t 30%, 50% f the ppulatin,” says Adrian Massey, authr f a bk called “Sick-Nte Britain”.
Fr all the fcus n anxiety and depressin in campaigns, severe mental illnesses still receive t little attentin. This is a prblem: accrding t the GBD, Britain has the highest rates f severe mental illness in Eurpe. The causes f such cnditins are unclear, but seem t invlve a 20 interplay f genetic and envirnmental factrs. Illegal drug misuse, fr which Britain has amng the highest rates in the regin, als plays a rle.
      II.Reading Cmprehensin (共45分。21-35每题1分;36-50每题2分)
      Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext
Thrughut histry, many lives have been lst at the hands f severe weather. Meterlgists (气象学家) and scientists alike are always investigating new ways t increase the warning time fr strms, with the hpe f reducing the 21 f lives. In the past few decades, lcal weather radar advancements have been made, which allw fr better accuracy in 22 the paths f strms.
Meterlgists and scientists have been able t successfully track severe thunderstrms and pssible trnades by using an advanced tracking system called NEXRAD (Next-Generatin Radar). NEXRAD is a tracking netwrk 23 158 Dppler weather radars. And during a strm this high-reslutin cmputerized 24 takes readings n the amunt f precipitatin (降水) in the air, the mvements in the cluds, and the wind speeds.
These 25 are bunced back t a lcal weather cmputer, and a clrful image appears n the screen, giving meterlgists a clear picture f what kind f weather is n the hrizn. This final image is what yu see when the meterlgist breaks in with severe weather reprts and warnings. 26 , n yur televisin screen yu will see a cmputer animated image f the appraching strm.
If the strm is severe enugh, then the Natinal Weather Service (NWS) will 27 severe weather reprts f severe thunderstrm warnings fr yur area. 28 , the strm captured n the radar will have prduced strng readable winds, detectable lightning, and sme hail (冰雹). Paying attentin t the weather map is 29 when severe weather is arund.
On the televisin screen yu will see several clrs n the precipitatin map, 30 frm blue (the lightest) t black (the heaviest). If the clrs fr yur 31 area are yellw, take cautin. If the clrs range between range and red, take cver immediately, as damaging winds and dangerus lightning have been reprted.
When lcal weather radar in Atlanta, Gergia reprted high winds, circular wind patterns and large hail earlier this year, the Natinal Weather Service issued a trnad 32 . Meterlgists in the area used the cllected data t predict what path the strm wuld take, 33 which areas needed t be warned.
Thanks t this technlgy, mst residents received the severe weather reprts early enugh t seek 34 befre the strm hit. Paying attentin t yur 35 weather surce during severe weather plays a vital rle in yur safety.

As midnight appraches in Svalbard, a yung plar bear climbs nt an iceberg (冰山) and carves himself a temprary bed befre falling asleep. This peaceful mment, capturing the essence f Earth’s delicacy, was taken by Nima Sarikhani, wh wn Wildlife Phtgrapher f the Year Peple’s Chice Award, which is decided by public vte.
Sarikhani, frm the UK, spent three days searching Nrway’s Svalbard islands in the hpe f catching sight f these symblic Arctic (北极的) animals. He was finally rewarded with the sight f bth an lder and yunger male shrtly after his ship changed curse. Sarikhani seized the chance t take a pht f the yunger bear sleeping n the iceberg — a scene that nt nly awakens the bnd between an animal and its habitat, but als the need t act n glbal challenges like climate change and habitat lss.
These days, the sight f a lne plar bear n melting ice is a familiar symbl f the impact f climate change. But that is fr a gd reasn: glbal warming is having a particularly rapid effect n the Arctic, which is heating up at a rate three times as high as that f the average arund the wrld. Amng thse hardest hit are these bears, which are increasingly threatened by the reductin in sea ice cver that they rely n t hunt and raise yung.
Thugh his pht is intended t aruse emtin in thse wh see it, Sarikhani is ptimistic that with the right actins, it isn’t t late fr plar bears. The image will be displayed in an exhibitin at the Natural Histry Museum, Lndn, alng with the cmpetitin’s fur runners-up, until 30 June.

      Ck’s last tur
Until recently Captain James Ck was nt a particularly cntrversial figure. But in January a statue f the 18th-century British explrer was pushed ver in Melburne and the wrds “The clny will fall” painted n the base. In Hawaii a mnument in Ck’s memry has been cvered with red paint and the message “Yu are n native land.” Ck has jined Edward Clstn and Cecil Rhdes as a fcus f anti-clnialist anger.
Yet Ck was neither a slave trader nr much f an imperialist. He was, first and fremst, a brilliant navigatr and mapmaker. Acting under gvernment rders, he undertk three pineering vyages in the Pacific between 1768 and 1779. His map-making transfrmed Eurpeans knwledge f the wrld’s largest cean.
An excellent new bk draws n Ck’s letters and ntebks t tell the stry f his third and final trip. Ck was almst 50 when he set ff n HMS Reslutin in July 1776. Ck had secret instructins frm the gvernment nt nly t claim new territry fr Britain, but t search fr a nrth west passage via the Bering Strait, a task even smene with his navigatinal experience fund impssible.
The authr, Hamptn Sides, fcuses n Ck’s return t Australia and New Zealand — cuntries the explrer had first encuntered almst a decade earlier — his discvery f the Sciety Islands and his time in Hawaii. It was there, in February 1779, that he was killed after a failed attempt t kidnap a lcal chief in respnse t the theft f a lngbat.
Ck was a man f his era. He believed Eurpe wuld have a civilising influence n many benighted (愚昧无知的) flk in the Pacific. He was cruel when carrying ut punishments t his wn crew as well as t any native peple wh ppsed him.
At the same time, Ck admired many f the peple and places he encuntered in the Suth Pacific. Unlike the Spanish, he had n interest in religius cnversin. He tried hard t stp his men frm spreading disease. Fr the mst part, his land claims were aimed nt at prmting a British empire but preventing grabs by its rivals, France and Spain.
As the authr makes clear, there is a balance t be struck between justified admiratin fr Ck’s seamanship and a justifiable hatred fr the clnialism that fllwed native peples’ first cntact with Eurpeans. Tday many Western cuntries are divided ver hw t think abut such vexed legacies (棘手的后遗症). In 2020 half f Britns thught it was right that Clstn’s statue was remved. Ck’s statue still stands in Lndn, as des Rhdes’s in Oxfrd. The questin is whether they will enjy their high psitins much lnger.
43.Hw d the public regard Ck currently?
A.He is nbler than Clstn and Rhdes.B.He is nt a cntrversial histric figure.
C.They blame the fall f the clny n him.D.Sme peple regard Ck as a clnialist.
44.During Ck’s first vyage in the Pacific Ocean, he _________.
A.landed the Sciety Islands and New ZealandB.cmmanded a warship called HMS Reslutin
C.searched fr a rute by way f the Bering StraitD.was revenged n a lcal chief fr stealing a bat
45.Ck’s behaviur can be described as ________.
      A.patritic and religiusB.well-intentined and irn-handed
      C.charitable and mralD.rebellius and awe-inspiring
46.Which f the fllwing des Hamptn Sides, the authr f a bk n Ck agree with?
      A.It is justifiable t remve Clstn’s, Ck’s and Rhdes’s statue.
B.Ck mainly aimed t expand dmains by grabbing land frm Spain.
C.We shuld view Ck’s adventure and British clnialism bjectively.
D.The vexed legacies result frm divisin in whether t remve the statues.
      Sectin C
Directins: Cmplete the fllwing passage by using the sentences in the bx Each sentence can nly be used nce. Nte that there are tw sentences mre than yu need.
      The Fssil Fuel (矿物燃料) Diet
Wuld yu like adding fssil fuel dressing t yur tmat salad, r hw abut cating salt water fish with it? If nly it were s easy t see the effect f fssil fuels n fd prductin, even envirnmentally friendly fd lvers might find their lunch turning t ash in their muths.
The glbal fd system is mre dependent n fssil fuels than we tend t recgnize. They pwer the tractrs that prepare fields and the pumps that extract grundwater fr sil watering. They are used t manufacture fertilizers. They drive the trucks, trains, and ships that transprt fd. 47
S says energy schlar Vaclav Smil, wh has dne sme calculatins t illustrate this pint. He estimates that prducing an average French laf requires the equivalent f abut 30 milliliters f diesel (柴油) fuel. A kilgram f rast chicken requires ver 300 milliliters. Surprisingly, a kilgram f tmates cultivated in a heated greenhuse and transprted lng distances requires twice as much diesel as the pultry (家禽). 48 . Prducing a kilgram f farmed salt water fish, fr example, uses a shcking 2 liters f diesel, accrding t Smil.
49 . It is als a majr reasn why agriculture generates arund a third f greenhuse gas emissins and is a dminant driver f bidiversity lss. Fr a healthier planet, we must find a way t stp “eating” fssil fuels.
Unfrtunately, ending that dependency will be even tugher than reducing emissins frm the pwer netwrk r transprtatin. But there are a thusand things we culd be ding better nw. 50 . Gvernments shuld supprt farming practices that cnserve carbn-string sil and use water and fertilizers mre efficiently. And we shuld eat much less meat. If we dn’t, we are stuck seasning each bite with diesel.
A.Reducing fd waste shuld be a tp pririty.
B.In fact, we may as well think f urselves as eating fssil fuels.
C.Despite this, many farmers are already prducing fd with minimal fssil fuel input.
D.Frtunately, remving fssil fuels frm fd prductin is a simple and straightfrward prcess.
E.Seafd is ften even wrse due t the inefficiency f feeding them with smaller, wild-caught fish.
F.This intensive use f energy frm fssil fuels is nt nly surprising but als cntributes t the glbal fd versupply.
      III.Summary Writing(共10分)
51.Directins: Read the fllwing three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
      Mental wrk
Many peple believe that physical wrk is mre exhausting than mental wrk. Hwever, recent research in psychlgy has shwn that mental wrk can be just as tiring as physical wrk. Mental wrk can be emtinally, cgnitively (认知地) , and physically exhausting, leading t feelings f tiredness, burnut, and even physical discmfrt.
Mental wrk requires a lt f fcus and attentin, which cnsumes a significant amunt f mental energy and willpwer, especially when we engage in tasks requiring lng perids f cncentratin. Cmplex thinking and cgnitively demanding tasks can actually burn calries. Accrding t sme research, the average persn burns abut 320 calries n a typical day just frm thinking.
A lt f mental wrk can be emtinally wearing. Peple wrking in prfessins can experience emtinal exhaustin due t the cnstant emtinal demands f their jbs. Psychlgists refer t this as emtinal labr. It especially applies t jbs where we deal with many different peple and persnalities thrughut the day, such as respnding t custmer cmplaints. These wrkers are asked t smile and be happy all day, even when they are verladed, stressed, r depressed.
T prevent mental exhaustin, it is imprtant t recgnize the signs f mental exhaustin and take practive steps t prevent burnut. One f the mst effective ways is t take regular breaks thrughut the day, which can help us recharge ur mental batteries, reduce stress, and increase ur verall prductivity. Furthermre, the key t a healthy wrk-life balance lies in setting bundaries between wrk and persnal life, managing ur wrklad, and priritizing self-care activities like exercise. By taking care f ur mental energy levels, we can imprve ur verall well-being and lead a mre fulfilling life.
