Life had always been abut actin fr frmer teacher Billy Keenan, wh had served in the Army befre. He mastered musical instruments including the flute, guitar, bass guitar and pian. As a cmpetitive triathlete and surfer, he cmpleted numerus 5K, 10K and half-marathn runs. “I was at the peak f my pwers,” he said.
But n Sept. 14, 2013, his life changed in an instant while surfing at the Jersey Shre. “I rde that wave, fell ff my bard, hit my head n the cean flr,” Keenan said. “Everything faded t black.” Keenan wke up in a hspital rm tw and a half weeks later. He had been paralyzed (瘫痪的) frm the shulders dwn and the medical team didn’t expect him t regain independent breathing.
Keenan called it ne f the wrst days f his life, saying it was “a lt f darkness”. When a parent f a frmer student visited him at the hspital, they handed him the phne. It was New Yrk Plice Department Detective Steven McDnald, wh survived a shting in 1986. He eventually frgave his attacker. But he t was paralyzed. He became a public speaker, cnveying the imprtance f frgiveness.
That day, he had advice fr Keenan. At a recent talk at Berkeley Cllege, Keenan recalled what McDnald had tld him. “The nly reasn yu survive is when yu’re better, when yu’re strnger, when yur recvery is ver, yu’re ging t cme back and cntribute in a significant way,” he said. “Dn’t ever frget that in the end, there will be life.”
Lking back n his life, Keenan realized he had been accustmed t what he called “deliberate discmfrt”. Drawing n his wn faith and that reminder frm McDnald, Keenan ascended beynd the darkest days. Fur mnths after his accident, he was able t breathe n his wn again.
In 2015, Keenan went back t teaching, but later retired. When McDnald died in January 2017, Keenan decided t start helping thers by becming a mtivatinal speaker. Plastic has been the nly material fr achieving this kind f flexibility, but because f its harmful impact n the envirnment, sustainable, lw-cst alternatives(替代物) are highly sught after.
Fish scales accunt fr 3 percent f the 70.5 millin metric tnnes f fish prduced glbally each year. They usually dn’t get eaten and g t waste, but Yu and his team saw ptential in flexible electrnics.
The team extracted gelatin frm fish scales and used this t create an extremely thin film. Tiny silver nanwires(纳米丝) were then incrprated int it, t act as electrdes(电极), alng with a light-emitting material made f zinc sulphide (硫化锌) and cpper, t prvide light fr the electrnic display.
“The result was a flexible electrnic display, which fully bidegraded(生物降解) after 24 days in sil. A plastic display can take centuries t break dwn. This means fish scale films culd als be useful fr creating dispsable wearable electrnic devices,” says Yu. “In additin t bidegradability, the fish scale films have the advantages f high transparency, lw surface rughness and lw cst. They can als be recycled by disslving them in warm water.”

These three aspects are key t the success f the “Kubuqi mdel”.
Elin, a private eclgy (生态) and investment cmpany, has invested abut 38 billin yuan ($5.82 billin) in the Kubuqi desert-greening prject since 1988 helping t lift abut 102,000 lcal farmers ut f pverty. Fr example, the lcals grw a drught-tlerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licrice, which is the mst used herb in traditinal Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert sil, with the bacteria arund the rts f the plants prducing nitrgen (氮气). Besides, Cistanche, anther type f drught-tlerant herb, was intrduced after the successful planting f licrice.
