After 20 years f effrts, a 26-ft-tall statue f Atlas is nce again standing guard at the ancient Temple f Zeus in the city f Agrigent in Sicily. The statue, created in the fifth century , was ne f 38 similar Atlas mnuments built int the temple. They std in a line between clumns with their arms raised, appearing t hld the structure upright.
In Greek mythlgy (神话), Atlas ignred rders frm Zeus, the ruler f the universe, in a war. S, he was frced t hld up the sky n his shulders. Unlike the mythlgical Atlas, hwever, the stne likenesses were unable t hld up Zeus’ temple frever. Ultimately, earthquakes and ther events caused the structure t cllapse.
Fr many years, pieces f the statues were spread ut arund the site amngst ther ancient ruins. In 1812, Charles Rbert Cckerell, a British architect, first identified ne f these sandstne heads during a visit t Agrigent. A century later, in 1920, archaelgist (考古学家) Pirr Marcni became the first persn t attempt t recnstruct ne f the Atlases, which is nw hused in the Archaelgical Museum f Agrigent.
The seeds f the current prject began in 2004, when the Valley f the Temples Park cnducted a research campaign at the site. But restring Atlas in a standing psitin was particularly challenging, as researchers culdn’t simply pile the pieces f the statue n tp f ne anther. Instead, they attached them t metal shelves, which are supprted by a larger metal structure.
The restratin has faced scrutiny (审查) ever since fficials first annunced it several years ag. “N archaelgist wuld agree n the use f ancient sculpture even if the purpse is t highlight the site’s antiquity,” said C. Brian Rse, an archaelgist at the University f Pennsylvania. But fficials like Renat Schifani, the Sicilian gvernr, think that the statue’s restratin is a substantial and impressive achievement.
“This statue f ancient Agrigent, which after many years f studies and research we can bserve in its natural psitin, is the heart f an imprtant museum prject f the entire area f the Temple f Zeus,” Schifani said.
12. Why did the statue f Atlas stand with his arms upright?
A. It was a symbl f strength
B. It was a punishment frm Zeus.
C. It demnstrated a Greek mythlgical stry.
D. It served as a pillar t hld the Temple f Zeus
13. What can we learn abut the restratin prject?
A. It was a lng and demanding prcess.
B It extended ver a perid f 192 years.
C. It restred the statue’s riginal structure.
D. Pirr Marcni was ne f the first advcates.
14. What is C. Brian Rse’s attitude twards the restratin?
A. Supprtive.B. Tlerant.C. Disapprving.D. Uncaring.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. A Twering Statue f Atlas Rises Again
B. Debates Arises ver the Restratin f Atlas
C. Restratin f the Temple f Zeus Cmpleted
D Ancient Agrigent Revitalises with New Atlas
