Gilbert White made extensive bservatins f the natural wrld in the 1770s. Rather than study dead specimens, as many “naturalists” befre him, White bserved plants and animals in their natural settings, making him ne f the early eclgists in Britain.
Because f the time at which he lived, he was nt fully aware f certain phenmena such as bird migratin, althugh he suspected such things ccurred. Thrugh his writing, many bilgists were given an insight int the perceptin f the natural wrld befre technlgical advancements.
As a keen bserver f birds, he distinguished between different species based n their sngs, withut using telescpes. White’s bservatins included seasnal data, such as bud-burst and flwering f cmmn plants, which he recrded in The Natural Histry and Antiquities f Selbrne — a cllectin f letters t tw great scientists f the time.
This bk has had mre than 200 editins and is reputed t be — after the Bible, the wrks f Shakespeare and Pilgrim’s Prgress — the furth mst published bk in the English Language. It was published in 1789 and since then has never been ut f print. The bk cntains 110 letters spanning 20 years.
In a letter, dated May 20, 1777, White discussed earthwrms, stating: “Earthwrms, thugh in appearance a small and insignificant link in the chain f nature, yet if lst, wuld trigger majr eclgical imbalance.” He als highlighted their rle as prmters f vegetatin, nting their activities like making hles in the sil, creating pathways, and prducing beneficial waste thrugh wrmcasts (蚯蚓粪).
It is quite remarkable that here, frm writings f nearly 250 years ag, White refers t many activities f earthwrms that we, as scientists and gardeners, nw take fr granted and cntinue t investigate in greater detail.
      24. What made Gilbert White different frm previus naturalists?
      A. His apprach t studying nature.B. His chice f bservatinal tls.
      C. His attitude t preserving species.D. His fcus n cntrlled envirnments.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have wrked tgether with meterlgists (气象学家) t analyze mre than 50,000 weather satellite images t quickly identify strms. They fund cmma-shaped clud frmatins that ften lead t severe weather such as thunderstrms.
Cmputers were then taught using cmputer visin and machine learning t autmatically detect these cluds frm satellite images, with almst 100 percent accuracy, in less than a minute. By refcusing meterlgists’ attentin n ptential strm clud frmatin the AI tl helped predict 64 percent f severe weather events and beat established detectin systems.
Accuweather senir meterlgist Steve Wistar said it let frecasters find strm frmatins in a sea f clud data. “The calling f ur business is t save lives and prtect prperty,” he said. “The mre advance ntice we give t peple that wuld be affected by a strm, the better we’re prviding that service.”
Expensive supercmputers are ften used t prcess vast amunts f data needed fr accurate weather predictin. But pwerful AI methds can run n smaller cmputers. Climate risk and planning cmpany ClimateAi uses a machine learning technique where tw neural netwrks fight and train each ther using glbal weather data until they get a result. This generates highly accurate and inexpensive lcal frecasts fr hurs r days ahead. And because it is nt as cstly, it allws prer cuntries affected by climate change t use frecasts t change the way they farm, build rads, and adapt t extreme weather.
Data analytics and technlgy cmpany DTN runs a high-reslutin weather frecast service prviding real-time infrmatin t New Yrk City Emergency Management amng thers. It uses AI fr bth strm and wildfire predictin, cmbining histrical weather infrmatin, weather mdels, and data n gegraphy and tpgraphy. Fr energy cmpanies, that includes data n vegetatin and pwer failures, which they then use t plan fr bth wildfires and utages.
“Average csts assciated with extreme weather events in the United States have increased steadily since 1980,” said DTN vice president f weather peratins, Renny Vandewege. “These have cstly impacts n cities’ basic services, husing, human livelihds, and health. AI helps us t calculate that risk and can be used as a preventive measure.”
      28. Hw d researchers at Pennsylvania State University use AI t enhance strm detectin?
      A. By cllecting satellite data.B. By building weather mdels.
      C. By identifying clud frmatins.D. By examining established systems.
      29. What is a majr disadvantage f traditinal weather frecasting cmpared t AI tls?
      A. Overreliance n weather data.B. Limited access t real-time images.
      C. Inaccuracy in predicting extreme weather.D. Slwer detectin f severe weather events.
      30. What d ClimateAi and DTN have in cmmn?
      A. They use extensive data.B. They prvide glbal frecasts.
      C. They partner with gvernments.D. They assess weather-related csts.
      31. What did Renny Vandewege highlight abut AI?
      A. Its accessibility fr nn-experts.B. Its rle in reducing climate risks.
      C. Its use in preventing extreme weather.D. Its ability t evaluate pst-disaster lsses.

My sn just cmpleted high schl, and his departure fr cllege marks a significant change fr me. Amng the things I’ll miss mst are his lessns in teenage slang (俚语), which has ffered me an accidental and useful prtrait f hw he and his generatin see the wrld.
The primary value f slang has been t create linguistic markers, a way t set yu apart frm ther peple. The terms change ver time, but the meanings typically dn’t — ne generatin’s “cl” becmes anther’s “dpe.”
Members f my sn’s generatin have a vastly superir apprach t slang. They have invented a language that respnds t the new and distinct reality they face, a sciety characterized by cllapsing institutins, ersins (削弱) in trust and a lss f faith in a shared sense f meaning.
“Mid,” fr example, in my sn’s usage, describes things that are average r slightly belw. Yu can’t really cmplain abut them, but they prduce n jy. Everything in Starbucks and airprts falls int the categry f “mid.”
“Glazed” has a similarly impressive precisin, indicating the act f psitively spinning a judgment n reality rather than cmplete lying. It is the perfect descriptin f the way scial media wrks, with everything taking n an artificially psitive, unreal and nt entirely trustwrthy lk. Fr example, beach phts n scial media might make a destinatin lk like paradise, yet they rarely shw the crwded shres r bad weather that are part f the reality.
My favrite slang wrd is “based,” ften used t express agreement when smene states a cntrversial pinin. “Canada shuld jin the United States,” ne might say, t which smene else might reply, “Based.” T my ear, “based” is a perfect wrd t describe the infrmatinal chas we inhabit.
Slang has brught my sn and me clser. It’s taught me that the current crp f teenagers created a language t describe the flawed reality we’ve abandned them t, and in ding s they’ve prved themselves less misguided and mre innvative than we were.
      32. What des teenage slang reveal abut yung peple?
      A. Their need t fit in with peers.B. Their respnse t the flawed reality.
      C. Their aim t challenge scial nrms.D. Their desire t utd lder generatins.
      33. Which cmment n a crwded beach reflects the underlined wrd “glazed”?
      A. “What a disaster!”B. “Nt crwded at all.”
      C. “A wnderful getaway!”D. “At least we fund a spt.”
      34. Which wrd best describes the tne f the text?
      A. Appreciative.B. Analytical.
      C. Instructive.D. Cautius.
      35. What is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Teenagers’ Fndness f Nnsense Wrds
      B. Mdern Slang Tells Us abut Yuth Culture
      C. The Impact f Teen Slang n Scial Relatins
      D. Teens Have Invented a Language fr the Wrld
