Starting with an rchestra playing traditinal Chinese instruments, the pera brught a cmpletely new sund t my Western ears.At first,I thught what I heard was a vilin but later I learnt that it was an instrument with tw strings called jinghu.Then, seeing the main characters cme n stage, I was surprised! The cstumes and masks were amazing.The perfrmers f curse sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated mvements and mime helped get the meanings acrss t the audience. The vices themselves sunded really unique--sme f the female vices were s high that I was sure they culd break glass! And the stage was really simple: a decrated whip represented a hrse, and a screen with Chinese characters, a study.Using such techniques, the pera had transfrmed a small stage int the whle universe.
