I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English by myself. Once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while travelling in America, I’d try to speak English with friends. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly. Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement. ( )1. I went to university and then moved across the country, had a hard job, married and raised children. I made an effort to keep the little bit of French that I learned in school, but finally realized that this was pointless. I fully realized that new languages are best learned when young, and that our abilities in that regard go down with age. However, just before my 50th birthday, I signed up for French classes. After I was tested to see which group I belonged in, I was placed at almost the starting level. When I looked around at my first Saturday morning class, I was struck by how many of the students were learning French as a third, fourth, or even fifth language. I used to think it was impossible to learn a new language, but some people can learn them easily, I discovered that some language skills weaken as we get older. While I’d always thought of myself as a quick learner, that was no longer the case. I learned new words very slowly. What I learned one week seemed to slip away as soon as I learned the next skill. I looked up the same words and language structures over and over again. Now, a couple of years in, I can listen to the news in French and catch 90 percent of it on the first try, read a novel if the language is not too difficult, and hold up my end of a conversation if it doesn’t go too fast. I can still achieve many things, who knows what? I’ve learned so much beyond grammar and vocabulary. I’ve met people from around the world and all walks of life who have the courage to make fools of themselves in order to learn something new. I’ve been taught by patient teachers from many corners of the world, including France, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. Listing to the news as it is presented to the people of France, I have a new understanding of how something can look completely different from another view. I’ve learned that a language is not just a set of words, but a way of thinking. But most of all, I’ve learned that it really is never too late to learn something new. ( )1. When did the writer first realize that new languages are best learned when young? In high school. B. In university. C. After moving across the country. D. After having children. ( )2. What surprised the writer about the other students in their French class? They were all beginners. They were all older than the writer. They were all learning French as a second language. They were all learning French as a third, fourth or fifth language. ( )3. How did the writer used to feel about learning a new language? It was easy for everyone. B. It was impossible for everyone. C. It was easy for some people. D. It was impossible for the writer. ( )4. What did the writer find difficult about learning a new language? Remembering new words. B. Understanding grammar. C. Speaking with native speakers. D. Reading scientific novels. ( )5. Why did the writer believe it’s better to learn a language at a young age? It is easier for young people to memorize new vocabulary. Old people are less patient with themselves to learn new things. Our abilities to learn a language go down with age. Young people are more motivated to learn new languages. 任务型阅读 Students learn their lessons in class. In class teachers teach them. Students sit in the classroom listening to the teacher. This is a way of learning. Is this the only way for students to learn something? Of course not. There is another way to learn. That is students can teach themselves. For example, if you can’t remember something when yo are doing your homework, you can look at your book to find the answer. This is a way to teach yourself. And it is not a difficult thing. We can do this at any place and at any time. How do you teach yourself? The first thing you must do is reading. Read something you are interested in, or you have to read. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. The question is something you don’t understand, or you want to know more about. You can write down these questions. A clever student is usually good at asking questions. The third is to answer the question yourself by thinking hard, by reading the text or other books, and something by asking other people. This is a way of teaching yourself. And you must do this all by yourself. If you keep doing like this for a long time, you can sure to succeed in your study. Is listening to the teacher the only way for students to learn something? What is another way of learning? In teaching yourself, what is the first thing you must do? What does a clever student usually like? If you want to succeed, what had you better learn? 四、根据短文内容,选择适当的单词填空,使语义通顺完整 Last year my English class was difficult for me. 1._____ of all, it wasn’t easy for me to understand the teacher when she talked to the class. First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on books or teachers. They find out their own ways to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find methods and rules for themselves. They also look for clues and get their own ideas by guessing. When they guess wrong, they try again. They try to learn from their mistakes. It is more important for them to learn to think than to know the meaning of every word. Successful language learning is active learning, so successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language. They usually look for such a chance. They find native speakers and ask them for help when they make mistakes. They will try everything to communicate. They are not afraid to what they hear or to say strange things. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in native speakers’ lives. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with foreigners and learn about their lives, their cultures and so on. 六、书面表达 在学习过程中,成为好的学习者至关重要。请以“Being a good learner”为题,写一篇80词左右的英语短文,谈谈如何成为一个好的学习者,包括学习方法、学习态度等方面。 答案 第一课时 一、1. corrects 2. method 3. suit 4. project 5. suggest 二、1. learner 2. enjoyable 3. aloud 4. connection 5. actively 三、1 -- 5 CACCA 6 -- 8 BDA 四、1. step by step 2. came across 3. building up In general 5. set weekly learning goals 五、1.
