When Ar’reina Green was accepted t Sacrament State last year, she knew she wuld need bks and
schl supplies. She didn’t expect t need a tlbx. Or hangers. Or that her drm rm wuldn’t cme with a fan.
Having grwn up in the fster (寄养) system, she fund life as a cllege student mstly mysterius.
That’s where Dec My Drm stepped in. The prgram wrks with mre than 140 fster yuth headed t cllege,
hsting an annual event in July t kit ut each student with sheet sets, pillws and cnnectins t ther peple in

the same situatin.
Green tk part in the summer f 2024, leaving with several bags filled with the things she needed, including
many items she didn’t knw she wuld need, like dish sap.
The prgram started in 2018 when Jill Franklin, manager f the Independent Living Prgram in Ls Angeles
Cunty, met a student wh came frm the fster system. This yung student described arriving at the University f
Califrnia at Berkeley with just a trash bag, nt knwing that drm rms are spartan: a desk, a chair, a bed with an
ddly sized mattress — and that’s it.
Franklin started with a small Amazn wishlist and a handful f students. It was particularly imprtant that the
kids were invlved in the prcess as much as pssible, she said, because they were used t living in spaces that
were nt their wn. If they culd pick their wn bedding and their wn blankets, they wuld create a rm that said,
“This is wh I am.”
In 2022, she met Phyllis Shinbane frm Cnnecting a Caring Cmmunity. Shinbane had been unaware that
fster yuth ften have nthing they can bring with them t cllege, but realized this was a need she culd help fill.
Tgether, they raised mre than $40,000 in dnatins in 2025.
“It’s just leveling the playing field,” said Shinbane. “It’s just putting them in a rm where they’re nt
different, and where their past desn’t define them.”
4. What des Dec My Drm prvide fr fster yuth?
A. Campus turs. B. Yearly schlarships.
C. Rm supplies. D. Academic guidance.
5. What des the underlined wrd “spartan” in Paragraph 4 mean?

— a ‘place n the crner.’”
With these wrds, American scilgist Ray Oldenburg captured the need fr accessible and enjyable scial
spaces. In his 1989 bk The Great Gd Place, he intrduced the term “third place” as a way f describing
“public places n neutral grund where peple can gather and interact.” Unlike the hme r wrk setting, these
envirnments — frm ancient public squares t tday’s cafés — have lng been essential hubs (中心) f
cnnectin, fstering a sense f belnging, lively interactin, and cmmunity spirit.
Hwever, the 21st century has witnessed a sharp decline in third places. Acrss England and Wales, mre than
ne pub clsed each day in 2024. Even where third places still exist, they are increasingly becming what
scilgist Marc Augé described as “nn-places” — spaces dminated by cnsumerism. In these settings, peple
are n lnger unique individuals but custmers. When scialising cmes with a high price tag, it is n surprise that
peple are pting t stay in and cmmunal spaces are starting t disappear.
Mdern living is reshaping the way scial spaces perate. As sciety mves frm a culture centred arund
scialising t ne cnsumed by prductivity, even pubs have adapted — sme nw serving as remte wrkspaces
where laptps are welcmed.
Still, there is hpe. Cities are rethinking their design thrugh thughtful and inclusive urban planning.
“Whether it’s a simple bench n a high street r a large-scale pavilin (公共活动亭), we invlve lcal grups,
especially yung peple, in the design prcess,” says Akmaral Alexander, an architect frm POR Cllective.
“This apprach nt nly gives peple a sense f wnership but als shapes rdinary spaces in meaningful ways,
enriching daily lives and strengthening cmmunities.”
8. Which f the fllwing might be an example f third places?
A. Private gardens. B. Yuth centres. C. Online classrms. D. Gvernment ffices.
9. Why are third places increasingly becming “nn-places”?
A. Rules there have becme stricter. B. Events there have becme frmal.
C. Design there has becme utdated. D. Scialising there has becme cstly.
10. What is Akmaral Alexander’s apprach t urban planning?
A. Seeking cmmunity input. B. Expanding public facilities.
C. Favring safety ver speed. D. Balancing frm and functin.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Nwhere t G: The Disappearing Third Place

Our ceans are full f sphisticated (精密的), perfect traps: nets, hks, fishing lines. Designed t capture
animals destined fr ur dinner tables, they ften catch ther wildlife t. This accidental harvest is knwn as
bycatch, and every year it kills millins f marine animals. It is als a dilemma fr fishermen, since trapped
creatures can damage equipment, csting time and mney.
“There are nt very many cnservatin issues where cnservatinists, cnsumers, fishermen and resurce
users all want the same thing,” says marine bilgist Matthew Savca. “Everyne invlved wants less bycatch.”
Sme bycatch preventin methds have already shwn prmise in field trials. A study in nrthern Peru’s
Sechura Bay, fr example, shwed a turtle bycatch reductin f mre than 60% thanks t LED-illuminated (照明)
nets. Anther apprach is pingers — devices attached t fishing gear that emit sunds t warn echlcating
animals away. In three Nrwegian fisheries, pingers reduced bycatch f harbr prpise by 94%.
But these slutins have yet t be implemented n a large scale. The devices can be expensive, and the
methds are nt withut dwnsides. LED lights may reduce target fish catch. Pingers are als linked with an
increase in bycatch f seals, which seem t assciate the sund with a ptential meal.
A lw-tech apprach may help small-scale fisheries reduce the bycatch f echlcating animals: fixing plastic
water bttles t their nets. Detecting thin, fine nets is difficult fr echlcatrs like dlphins, but water bttles are a
mre easily detectable bstacle that culd help them avid the nets.
Fr a slutin t wrk, plicies and regulatins need t be in place and enfrced. Just as imprtant, preventive
measures need t be practical fr fishermen and nt add extra time and mney t d the jb. As marine
sustainability scientist Lekelia Jenkins says, the smaller the change, the mre likely fishermen are t adpt it.
The human side f the issue als needs t be acknwledged. “Emtinally, fishermen arund the wrld are
beat up and beat dwn,” Jenkins says. “We say, ‘Yu’re the prblem. Yu’re catching sea turtles and whales.’” She
suggests that fishermen shuld be empwered and included in the discussins and develpment f slutins.
12. Why des Matthew Savca list different grups f peple?
A. T examine their different rles in bycatch.
B. T stress their shared wish t reduce bycatch.
C. T explain why bycatch preventin takes time.
D. T shw hw widely bycatch is underestimated.
第 7页/共 12页
13. What makes LED lights a less attractive slutin?
A. Bringing up training csts. B. Attracting seals t fishing bats.
C. Leading t a smaller desired catch. D. Making fishing nets harder t handle.
14. Hw d plastic bttles help reduce dlphin bycatch?
A. By helping the nets flat better. B. By marking the nets fr fishermen.
C. By helping dlphins sense the danger. D. By blcking dlphins’ swimming path.
15. What des Jenkins imply abut fishermen?
A. They are t blame fr bycatch. B. They deserve a vice in decisins.
C. They prefer simple fishing methds. D. They shuld leave slutins t experts.
