While ball games and chess dminate the sptlight, sme unusual sprts remain ff the radar but they’re just as thrilling! These activities nt nly lift yur spirits but als bring back the true essence f sprts: FUN! Here are fur fascinating examples:
      Quidditch
Inspired by J.K. Rwling’s Harry Ptter series, this magical game is nw a real internatinal sprt. Each team has seven players, and every player must keep a brm between their legs frm start t finish. Cmbining elements f rugby and ddgeball, it’s called “Muggle Quidditch” since nn-magical flks play it withut magic.
      Yubi Lakpi
This traditinal Indian game resembles ftball, but with a twist — players use a ccnut instead f a ball. Tw teams cmpete t carry the ccnut int the ppnent’s gal area. T make the game mre challenging, players apply il t their bdies, making them slippery and hard t grab. Tugh enugh? Give it a try!
      Zrbing
Imagine rlling dwnhill inside a giant plastic ball. That’s zrbing! It first riginated in New Zealand in the 1990s and has grwn int a ppular utdr adventure activity arund the wrld. Usually dne n gentle slpes r flat grund, it’s mre abut the jy f rlling than cmpetitin. Perfect fr a fun day ut with friends!
      Te Wrestling
Yes, it’s real and it even has a Wrld Champinship! Similar t arm wrestling, ppnents try t pin each ther’s tes dwn fr three secnds. Matches alternate between left and right feet, with the best f three runds deciding the winner. S kick ff yur shes and scks. It’s te-wrestling time!

Gathering ingredients fr my favrite sandwich takes time. Certainly mre than 10 secnds — the time my fridge allws me t quietly search inside. After thse 10 secnds, a series f ear-piercing beeps begin — an alarm t remind frgetful humans t clse its drs. My suspicin is that the alarm, which cannt be neutralized, was designed t stp my late-night search in the fridge — my wife has lng warned me that midnight snacking is bad fr my waistline.
The frightened fridge is just ne example f the creatins by engineer-designers wh are cnvinced that senirs like me can’t survive withut beeping reminders. My car beeps cnstantly, particularly when I get ut. There is simply n way t stp it. At first, I thught the car was just t sad t see me g.
It is nt just the fridge and the car. Once I started paying attentin, I realized ur envirnment is filled with reminder nises. The stve (炉灶) sings t — leave a burner n and it perfrms its wn little cncert. As fr my phne, even after turning ff every ntificatin I can find, calendar reminders still get thrugh.
S I went nline lking fr a slutin — and fund a vide f an equally frustrated man taking apart the beeper n the exact same fridge mdel. I can handle the fix. But nw the questin is: D I really want t? What if I leave the fridge dr partly pen and ruin a cstly rast? What if I miss the ntificatin that reminds me f an appintment I may frget? The cnsequences f an unbeeped life may be t serius t risk.
Finally, tl in hand, I stand befre the fridge. If there were a silence ptin, I might leave it alne. But there isn’t — and I’ve had enugh. I’ll remve the nise-maker and put a sticky nte n the dr instead, reminding me t clse it. The reward f a successful late-night search fr a delicius sandwich is definitely wrth it.
      4. What des the underlined wrd “neutralized” in paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Used.B. Heard.C. Disabled.D. Repaired.
      5. The stve and phne are mentined t illustrate that ________.
      A. elderly peple have a failing memry
      B. mdern machines are prly designed
      C. technlgy changes senirs’ living habits
      D. beeping alarms are unavidable in daily life
      6. What can be inferred abut the authr frm paragraph 4?
      A. He fails t find a way t stp the nise.
      B. He cnsiders the nline vide unhelpful.
      C. He wrries abut life withut reminders.
      D. He is unable t fix the fridge by himself.
      7. What des the authr finally decide t d abut the fridge?
      A. Buy a much quieter fridge.B. Tlerate the disturbing nise.
      C. Avid late-night searches in it.D. Replace the alarm with a nte.
      C
Chatan One, the wrld’s first cmmercial pwer generatr that uses supercritical carbn dixide (sCO₂), has begun peratins in China. This achievement breaks a century-ld traditin f using steam fr pwer generatin, marking a majr imprvement in efficiency.
The inventin f the steam engine was a first step twards the Industrial Revlutin that changed the wrld. Over the years, the engine’s efficiency was further imprved thrugh different designs and fuels; hwever, the medium fr ding wrk remained the same-steam.
Scientists seeking further imprvements in pwer efficiency nticed that a significant prtin f energy is wasted generating steam t drive turbines (涡轮机). Water needs t be biled first and needs t underg a phase change t generate steam. Scientists have been lking fr a better medium t replace steam.
They fund this in sCO₂. CO₂ exists as a gas at rm temperature and can be cled t frm dry ice by reducing pressure and lwering temperature. When temperature is raised t 31℃, and pressure is increased t 7.37 MPa, CO₂ enters its supercritical state, where it exhibits prperties f bth a liquid and a gas. In applicatins such as mving a turbine, this is extremely useful since the gas-like state ffers less resistance while the liquid-like state prvides greater push pwer.
The pwer generatin prcess wrks like this: The CO₂ is first pressurized int a supercritical state. Then the sCO₂ passes thrugh a heat exchanger, absrbing heat frm an external heat surce, and its temperature rises t 400-600℃ with a substantial increase in internal energy. After that, it enters a turbine and expands rapidly, driving it t mve at a high speed and transfrming thermal (热的) energy int mechanical energy, which is then further turned int electrical energy fr utput. The CO₂ remains in a supercritical state thrughut the entire prcess, with n phase change lss.
The success f the Chatan One will likely start a new era in pwer generatin, using CO₂ as a medium and bypassing the need t transfrm water int steam.
      8. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 2?
      A. Highlight the value f steam.B. Applaud the past cntributins.
      C. Outline the Industrial Revlutin.D. State the backgrund f a new discvery.
      9. What is the biggest prblem with steam pwer generatin?
      A. Energy-intensive.B. Labr-demanding.
      C. Nise-prducing.D. Mney-cnsuming.
      10. What plays a key rle in the high efficiency f Chatan One?
      A. The durability f turbines.B. The quick cmmercializatin f generatrs.
      C. The easy availability f CO₂.D. The cntinuity f CO₂’s supercritical state.
      11. What is true abut supercritical carbn dixide (sCO₂) accrding t the text?
      A. It exists nly as a pure gas when in its supercritical state.
      B. It can reach its supercritical state at rm temperature and nrmal pressure.
      C. It cmbines the lw resistance f a gas-like state with the strng pwer f a liquid-like state.
      D. It underges a phase change frm gas t liquid during the pwer generatin prcess.
      D
Have yu ever fund smene cpying yur gestures r facial expressins during a cnversatin? This is the Chamelen (变色龙) Effect, the nncnscius mimicry (模仿) f thers’ behavirs. Just like a chamelen integrates int its envirnment, peple uncnsciusly mimic thers’ gestures, mannerisms r accents t build cnnectins and smth interactins, which is a cmmn yet easily verlked human trait.
Psychlgists Jhn Bargh and Tanya Chartrand prved the Chamelen Effect in a 1999 experiment. They asked 78 participants t talk with experimenters during a persnality test. T avid cnscius mimicry, researchers used phts as a distractin during cnversatins. The results shwed participants uncnsciusly increased face tuching by 20% and ft mvement by 50% t match the experimenters. Anther part fund peple wh were mimicked rated the experimenters mre psitively, shwing mimicry bsts likability. The Chamelen Effect stems frm tw main reasns. It is rted in human empathy — peple mimic thers t share feelings and build emtinal bnds. It als evlved as a survival trait: fitting in with a grup helps peple gain supprt and avid danger. In daily life, this explains why cuples r clse friends gradually adpt similar speech habits r gestures.
This effect als appears in speech and scial settings. Peple may uncnsciusly pick up thers’ accents r phrases after lng interactins. Fr example, a ftball player nce accidentally used a French accent during an interview after living in France fr mnths, a typical display f the effect. Hwever, excessive mimicry may make peple lse their sense f self. Such ver-mimicry can lead t cnfusin abut ne’s true persnality.
Overall, the Chamelen Effect is a psitive scial tl that prmtes cnnectin and empathy. It helps reduce scial tensin and build trust between peple. While it helps peple integrate int grups, balancing mimicry with self-identity is crucial t aviding lsing neself in scial interactins. With this awareness, peple can use the effect wisely while preserving their wn uniqueness.
      12. Which f the fllwing is an example f the “Chamelen Effect”?
      A. A girl cpies her deskmate’s mvements.
      B. A driver fllws a pliceman’s directins.
      C. An applicant learns the judge’s expressins by heart.
      D. An assistant practices a freigner’s tnes n purpse.
      13. What can be inferred abut the “Chamelen Effect” frm paragraph 2?
      A. Persnality changes with cnscius mimicry.
      B. Likability increases mimicry in cnversatins.
      C. Peple mimic thers t gain grup acceptance.
      D. Mimicry aruses shared feelings between cuples.
      14. What is the dwnside f excessive mimicry?
      A. The lss f self-identity.
      B. An end t true cnnectin.
      C. The failure f mutual trust.
      D. A decrease in scial tensin.
      15. What is the authr’s attitude twards the “Chamelen Effect”?
      A. Dubtful.B. Critical.
      C. Dismissive.D. Cautius.

Can I help yu?” I sent him a message, saying, “Yes. That's abslutely great.”
We met at the empty lt the next Saturday mrning. Mr. Wilsn brught nt nly tls but als a small hand- drawn map. He pinted and said, “We can plant sunflwers here because they lve sunlight, and we can put sme easy- t- grw flwers near the path.” I was surprised by his knwledge. As we started cleaning tgether, he shared stries abut the small garden he used t keep in his hmetwn. I realized he missed thse days deeply.
During the fllwing weeks, we wrked every weekend. The wrk was nt easy. We had t remve the rubbish, clear the deep weeds and fill the muddy puddles with sil. Mr. Wilsn shwed me hw t prperly plant the seeds and water them. As we wrked, mre neighbrs became interested.
