At just 16 years ld, Maria Gnzalez has already made a name fr herself in the wrld f rbtics. The high schl junir frm Hustn, Texas, recently wn the Internatinal Yuth Rbt Cmpetitin with her inventin — a lw-cst prsthetic hand cntrlled by muscle signals.
Grwing up in a family f immigrant wrkers, Maria witnessed firsthand the struggles f peple wh had lst limbs in wrkplace accidents. "Many f them culdn't affrd expensive prsthetics, which can cst tens f thusands f dllars," Maria explained. "I wanted t create smething affrdable that culd change their lives."
Maria spent tw years develping her prttype. She learned cding frm free nline curses, studied anatmy frm library bks, and used a secnd-hand 3D printer t manufacture the parts. The ttal cst f her prsthetic hand? Less than $200.
The cmpetitin judges were impressed nt nly by the lw cst but als by the hand's functinality. Unlike many expensive prsthetics that require cmplex surgery t install, Maria's design uses surface sensrs that stick t the skin. Users can cntrl the fingers t perfrm basic actins like gripping a water bttle r picking up a pencil.
"Maria's inventin represents a breakthrugh in accessible technlgy," said Dr. James Liu, ne f the cmpetitin judges. "She has demnstrated that innvatin desn't require expensive labs r advanced degrees — just creativity and determinatin."
Since winning the cmpetitin, Maria has received funding t further develp her design. She plans t study bimedical engineering in cllege and hpes t eventually make her prsthetic hand available t thse wh need it mst.
24. What mtivated Maria t invent the prsthetic hand?

The idea that multitasking makes us mre prductive is ne f the mst persistent myths f the digital age. We check emails during vide calls, scrll thrugh scial media while watching TV, and text friends while ding hmewrk. But a grwing bdy f research suggests that what we call multitasking is actually task-switching — and it cmes at a significant cst t ur efficiency and mental health.
When we think we're ding tw things at nce, ur brain is actually rapidly shifting attentin between tasks. Each shift requires mental energy and time. Studies shw that even brief mental blcks created by shifting between tasks can cst as much as 40% f smene's prductive time.
"The brain is nt designed fr heavy-duty multitasking," explains Dr. Sarah Chen, a neurscientist at Stanfrd University. "When peple try t perfrm tw tasks simultaneusly, the brain lacks the capacity t perfrm bth tasks successfully."
Research using brain imaging technlgy reveals that multitasking activates different neural pathways than fcused wrk. While fcused wrk engages areas assciated with deep prcessing and memry frmatin, multitasking triggers the stress respnse system, releasing crtisl (皮质醇) and adrenaline (肾上腺素). Over time, chrnic multitaskers reprt higher levels f anxiety, prer memry, and greater mental fatigue.
Hwever, nt all multitasking is equally harmful. Simple, autmatic tasks — like walking and chewing gum — use different brain resurces and can be dne tgether withut issue. The prblems arise when we try t cmbine tw tasks that bth require cnscius attentin.
Interestingly, studies suggest that peple wh frequently multitask are actually wrse at it than thse wh rarely d it. Heavy multitaskers shw greater difficulty filtering irrelevant infrmatin and switching between tasks efficiently. This suggests that multitasking may be a habit that weakens ur cgnitive cntrl rather than a skill we can imprve with practice.
S what's the slutin? Single-tasking. Set aside dedicated time fr imprtant tasks, turn ff ntificatins, and give yur full attentin t ne thing at a time. Yur brain — and yur prductivity — will thank yu.
28. What des the authr say abut multitasking?
A. It is a valuable skill in the digital age.
B. It actually reduces prductivity.
C. It imprves with regular practice.
D. It is pssible fr simple tasks nly.
29. What happens in the brain during multitasking accrding t the research?
A. Multiple tasks are prcessed simultaneusly.
B. Memry frmatin is significantly enhanced.
C. The stress respnse system becmes active.
D. Neural pathways becme mre efficient.
30. What did studies find abut heavy multitaskers?
A. They are better at filtering infrmatin.
B. They have strnger cgnitive cntrl.
C. They are less efficient at task-switching.
D. They experience less mental fatigue.
31. What is the authr's suggestin fr better prductivity?
A. Practice multitasking regularly.
B. Fcus n ne task at a time.
C. Use brain training apps.
D. Take mre frequent breaks.

In the highlands f Papua New Guinea, a grup f indigenus wmen have becme unlikely guardians f ne f the wrld's mst valuable crps — cffee. Thrugh a cperative called Mama Cffee, these wmen are transfrming their cmmunities while prtecting ancient farming traditins.
Cffee has been grwn in Papua New Guinea fr ver a century, but it has traditinally been cnsidered men's wrk. Wmen tended t vegetable gardens and cared fr children while men managed cffee prductin and cntrlled the incme. This changed when a lcal nn-prfit rganizatin recgnized that wmen were ding much f the actual labr — planting, weeding, and harvesting — withut sharing in the prfits.
The Mama Cffee cperative was established in 2015 with 25 wmen. Tday, it has grwn t ver 500 members acrss 12 villages. The cperative prvides training in rganic farming techniques, financial literacy, and business management. Mre imprtantly, it gives wmen direct access t internatinal cffee buyers, bypassing middlemen wh traditinally tk mst f the prfits.
The impact has been remarkable. Wmen wh nce had n independent incme nw earn mney that they cntrl. They're using these earnings t send their children — especially girls — t schl, t imprve their hmes, and t start small businesses. One member, Anna Wani, used her cffee earnings t build a small stre in her village. "Befre Mama Cffee, I never held mney in my hands," she says. "Nw I am teaching my daughter that she can d anything."
The cperative als practices shade-grwn cffee, which preserves the frest canpy that native birds and ther wildlife depend n. By maintaining traditinal farming methds that wrk with nature rather than against it, these wmen are helping t prtect ne f the mst bidiverse places n Earth.
Climate change pses new challenges. Unpredictable rainfall patterns and rising temperatures are affecting cffee prductin. But the wmen f Mama Cffee are adapting, planting shade trees t prtect their crps and experimenting with mre resilient cffee varieties.
"Peple think that t succeed in business yu need t be aggressive and cmpetitive," says cperative funder Teresa Michael. "These wmen are shwing that cperatin and care fr cmmunity can be just as pwerful."
32. What was the traditinal rle f wmen in cffee prductin in Papua New Guinea?
A. They managed the cffee incme.
B. They did the majrity f physical labr.
C. They cntrlled the sales t buyers.
D. They received training in business management.
33. What is a key feature f the Mama Cffee cperative?
A. It excludes men frm any participatin.
B. It sells cffee nly within the lcal area.
C. It cnnects wmen directly t internatinal buyers.
D. It uses mdern farming techniques exclusively.
34. What envirnmental benefit des the cperative's farming methd prvide?
A. It increases cffee prductin significantly.
B. It preserves wildlife habitats.
C. It reduces the need fr water.
D. It eliminates all pests naturally.
35. What des Teresa Michael emphasize abut the wmen's apprach?
A. Aggressin is necessary fr business success.
B. Cmpetitin drives innvatin.
C. Cperatin and cmmunity care are valuable.
D. Traditinal methds are utdated.

The letter arrived n a rainy Tuesday in March. I recgnized my grandfather's handwriting immediately — the shaky letters that had becme mre difficult t read ver the years. Inside was a single phtgraph and a shrt nte: "This is the tree. I hpe yu'll find it."
The phtgraph shwed a massive ak tree standing alne in an pen field. On its trunk, smene had carved tw sets f initials inside a heart. My grandfather's initials were n the left. The nes n the right belnged t smene I'd never heard f: E.M.
I called my father, wh lived three states away. "Wh is E.M.?" I asked.
There was a lng pause. "Yur grandfather has never talked abut her," he finally said. "I nly knw that she was his first lve. They planted that tree tgether in 1952, the year befre he met yur grandmther. He hasn't mentined her in ver sixty years."
The nte gave n ther clues — just the prmise f a tree waiting t be fund smewhere in rural Vermnt. My grandfather was 87 years ld and in failing health. If I wanted t understand this mystery, I needed t act quickly.
The next mrning, I drve six hurs t the twn where my grandfather grew up. The landscape had changed dramatically — husing develpments and shpping centers had replaced many f the ld farms. I spent tw days driving dwn back rads, cmparing the phtgraph t every field I passed.
On the third day, I almst gave up. Then I sptted it — a field behind an abandned church. The tree was still there, thugh much larger than in the phtgraph. The carved heart had stretched with the trunk, the initials nw far apart but still visible.
As I apprached the tree, I nticed smething tied t ne f the lwer branches — a small envelpe, yellwed with age.

Paragraph 1:
With trembling hands, I reached up and untied the envelpe. Inside was a handwritten letter, the paper s fragile I feared it might crumble in my fingers. "Dear Henry," it began, "if yu're reading this, yu came back t ur tree." The letter was frm E.M.—Eleanr Matthews, my grandfather's first lve. She wrte abut their summer tgether in 1952, the prmises they made, and hw she had t mve away when her father lst his jb. "I waited fr yu t write," she cntinued, "but I never heard frm yu. Paragraph 2:

"I was t prud t write," he whispered. "I thught she had frgtten me." He then tld me abut the letters he had written but never sent, the nes he kept in a shebx under his bed. That afternn, we pened the bx tgether. Sixty-tw letters, each ne a cnversatin never had. "Yu fund her fr me," he said, hlding my hand. "That's the greatest gift anyne has ever given me." He never wrte t Eleanr, but smething in him seemed lighter after that day, as if the tree had finally released a secret it had kept fr sixty years.
