Recently, n a snw-cvered walk thrugh Milham Park in Prtage Lake, Michigan, a wman named Laura nticed smething strange up ahead. There were tw little black animals in the snw, shaking under a bush. Upn clser inspectin, Laura realized that the birds were a pair f ducks. The animal lver immediately knew smething was wrng — the birds didn’t lk like wild ducks, and they seemed t be suffering in the freezing temperatures. Immediately, Laura cntacted Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary (庇护所), wh sent rescues t the scene. “Literally within 15 minutes, they were ut the dr and at the park, and they had the shaking ducks cmfrtable in a warm carrier,” Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary wrte in a pst.
Rescuers identified the birds as black Swedish ducks — medium-sized dmestic ducks knwn fr their black-and-white clring. Their hearts brke fr the birds, wh had likely been abandned. “There are n ducks that I knw f that are that size and that clr wh are wild,” a representative frm the rescue said. Unlike wild ducks, dmestic ducks cannt fly, making it very difficult fr them t survive withut human care. These tw prbably wuldn’t have made it if Laura hadn’t stepped in.
Bth birds were “disrderly,” and ne f them suffered frm discharge arund her eyes. Sanctuary team members quickly cleaned them up and settled them in a warm place. They spent weeks mnitring their fd intake and health, making sure the birds were n the rad t recvery.
Tday, these birds are feeling much better, enjying life in their frever hme. “They’re bth ding very well,” Laura said in an interview. “They’re living happily with all their ther duck friends at the sanctuary!”
      4. Which wrd best describes Laura in paragraph 1?
      A. Observant.B. Optimistic.C. Cperative.D. Cnfident.
      5. What indicated the ducks were dmestic rather than wild?
      A. Their relatively small size.B. Their distinct appearance.
      C. Their shaking in the cld.D. Their presence in the park.
      6. What des the wrd “disrderly” in paragraph 3 describe abut the ducks?

Despite the enrmus variety f languages spken arund the wrld, certain grammatical patterns keep shwing up. A new study finds that abut ne-third f lng-standing “language universals” are backed by strng statistical evidence when tested using mdern methds.
An internatinal research team led by Annemarie Verkerk (Saarland University) and Russell D. Gray (Max Planck Institute fr Evlutinary Anthrplgy) analyzed 191 prpsed universals using Grambank, the largest database f grammatical features ever created. Their data cvered mre than 1,700 languages. In earlier research, language experts tried t avid similarities between related r nearby languages by selecting samples frm distant regins. While helpful, that apprach des nt fully remve hidden cnnectins between languages. It can als weaken statistical results and fails t reveal hw languages change ver time.
T address this, the researchers used Bayesian spati-phylgenetic analyses, which accunt fr bth shared ancestry and gegraphic influence. This apprach ffers a much higher level f statistical accuracy than mst previus studies.
“In the face f huge language diversity, it is interesting t find that languages dn’t shift at randm,” says Verkerk. “I am delighted that the different types f analyses we did agreed n very similar results, suggesting that language change must be a central cmpnent in explaining universals.”
The findings shw strng supprt fr several repeated patterns. These include wrd rder preferences, such as whether verbs cme befre r after bjects, and level-based structures, such as hw grammatical relatinships are marked within sentences. Imprtantly, these patterns have appeared repeatedly acrss unrelated languages in different parts f the wrld. This repetitin suggests that there are deep principles guiding hw humans rganize language.
By identifying which universals truly stand up t hard testing, the study helps narrw the fcus fr future research. It pints scientists tward the underlying cgnitive (认知的) and cmmunicative frces that shape human language.
      8. What is the majr shrtcming f earlier sampling methds?
      A. Limited language samples.B. Over-reliance n Grambank data.
      C. Failure t track time changes.D. Incmplete remval f cnnectins.
      9. Hw des the new study ensure greater accuracy?
      A. By expanding language samples.B. By cmparing distant languages.
      C. By adpting a new analysis methd.D. By fcusing n wrd rder patterns.
      10. What can be inferred abut language change?
      A. It is largely randm.B. It fllws certain principles.
      C. It depends n gegraphy.D. It affects unrelated languages.
      11. Why des the authr talk abut wrd rder preferences?
      A. T clarify the cncept f universals.
      B. T explain hw the new study wrks.
      C. T prve the diversity f wrld languages.
      D. T shw the cmplexity f language analysis.
      D
Scientists have created a three-dimensinal “heart-n-a-chip” (HOC) that culd prvide a breakthrugh in the fight against the wrld’s leading cause f death, cardivascular (心血管) disease.
One majr challenge is that we cannt easily test hw a human heart will react t a drug r disease withut putting smene at risk. This engineered heart tissue beats n its wn, it releases chemicals t start muscular activity, and it respnds predictably t cmmn drugs. It’s the first t include a tw-way sensing platfrm that prvides real-time tracking f activity thrughut the heart tissue dwn t the cellular level.
In a recent paper, scientists frm multiple Canadian institutins describe hw they achieved this “significant advance in heart tissue engineering and drug testing.” The key advance here is the integratin f sensrs that can detect bth large-area and small-area heart activity. Bth current HOC platfrms and the research team’s previus versin, described in a 2024 paper, lack high-reslutin cellular-level sensing. Small-area sensing is vital because many cardivascular diseases (CVDs) are assciated with impairment in heart muscle cells, the individual beating cells that frm heart muscle tissue. As a result, measuring cellular functin is critical fr preventing heart failure in patients with CVDs.
T build their HOCs, the researchers harvested heart muscle cells and heart cnnective tissue cells frm lab animals. They placed these cells int a sft structure rich in fibrus prteins and nutrients t stimulate grwth, and then seeded them n tiny, flexible silicn-based chips (芯片). This is a majr step tward testing diseases in the lab, since cell-generated frces gvern the develpment f heart tissues, including their frmatin, remdeling, cntractin efficiency, wund healing, and cancer prgressin.
Next, the researchers plan t mdel specific disrders by building heart tissues using cells frm patients living with varius heart cnditins. These include a type f genetic heart muscle disease that can lead t heart failure, as well as irregular heartbeats, an umbrella f disrders that cause heart rate abnrmalities.
      12. Hw des the new HOC differ frm earlier versins?
      A. It uses human patient cells.B. It beats with external help.
      C. It senses cellular heart activity.D. It uses mre flexible materials.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “impairment” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Abnrmal wrking.B. Quick recvery.
      C. Natural grwth.D. Regular beating.
      14. What d the researchers intend t d with HOCs?
      A. Replace animal testing.B. Grw full hearts fr patients.
      C. Cure DNA-based heart diseases.D. Study patient-specific heart diseases.
      15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. The New Methds t Build 3D hearts
      B. A Fresh Prcess fr Heart Drug Testing
      C. An Innvatin in Heart Tissue Engineering
      D. The Fight Against Cardivascular Diseases

Far mre than an rdinary pnd, it was the warm heart f ur cmmunity and an irreplaceable bnd cnnecting every resident. It served as a jyful playgrund fr children, a peaceful resting spt fr the elderly t chat and enjy the sft wind, and a cmfrtable place fr neighbrs t exchange kind wrds after a busy day. It filled ur neighbrhd with warmth and vitality (活力), gifting ur daily life with simple, sweet jy. This precius shared treasure witnessed ur warm mments and made the crner f Laval feel like a mre lving and harmnius hme.
Unfrtunately, ne year ag, this belved little crner was ttally ruined by careless littering. Peple casually threw plastic bags, empty bttles and all kinds f daily waste int it: plastic bags flating n the water like trn ld clths, glass bttles half stuck in the thick black mud f the shallws like cast-aside teeth, and bad fd waste swimming abut like rtten (腐烂的) wd. Its nce clear water turned int dark black mud, sending ut an unpleasant smell that made peple hurry away in dislike. N small living things culd be seen at all nw, and the nce lvely waterside plants were dying fast, with their trunks ging bad and falling int the dirty water like brken small branches.
This nce lvely place was nw dirty and smelly, greatly influencing ur cmmunity. It stayed quiet and grey, with n sign f happy laughter. Mre and mre neighbrs were starting t express their cmplaints.
Sharing my deep disappintment abut these terrible changes with my father ne afternn, he tld me patiently that the pnd was a precius gift fr ur cmmunity. His wrds tuched me deeply, leaving me with a strng desire t prtect the pnd.
