Lk at the rats slipping befre yu n a city street, at the spider that smehw gt smashed in yur elevatr.

Yu experience a sleepless night, and the next day yu find yurself in a meeting, reaching fr an answer t a questin frm yur supervisr that yu failed t hear. Or yu’re driving hme and realize that the exit yu were suppsed t take frm the highway is 30 secnds behind yu.
They’re called “attentinal failures,” and they’re far mre likely t ccur when we have insufficient sleep. And because f the incnvenience and embarrassment that result frm these failures, ur typical respnse t them is annyance at hw ur brains fail t keep ur attentin.
Accrding t a recent study at MIT and Bstn University, hwever, such annyance is misguided. Far frm being the result f ur brain’s “neglect” in failing t keep us alert, the lapses (失效) f attentin that we experience after a sleepless night are actually a sign that ur brains are wrking hard t prevent damage that lst sleep — whether vluntary r therwise — might bring abut.
Building n earlier research revealing that, while we sleep, the brain remves ptentially harmful waste prducts that build up during the day with a rhythmical flw f cerebrspinal fluid(脑脊液), the study explred what happens t the waking brain when it is shrt f sleep. Twenty-six participants cmpleted tw sessins in which they perfrmed sustained attentin tasks: ne after a full night f sleep, and the ther after pulling an all-nighter.
Surprisingly, immediately after each lapse began, a pulse f cerebrspinal fluid flwed utward frm the brain, and just as the lapse ended, the prcess was reversed, and the fluid flwed back int the brain — a flw pattern that strngly resembled the cleaning prcess the brain underges while we are sleeping.
The mst bvius slutin t attentinal lapses due t sleep lss is, f curse, t get mre sleep. A grwing bdy f research suggests numerus ways in which a gd night’s sleep benefits the brain, s even if staying mre alert during the day is ur primary mtivatin fr turning ff the TV r cmputer and sliding under the cvers, a secndary result f turning in early is a healthier brain, s priritizing adequate sleep in ur schedule is a win-win.
28. What may happen t peple after a sleepless night?
A. They are late fr a meeting.B. They suffer a lss f hearing.
C. They miss the intended highway exit.D. They fail t answer the supervisr’s questin.
29. What is the reasn fr attentinal failures after staying up late?
A. Our brains fail t keep us alert.B. Our brains are trying t prtect us.
C. Sleep lss results in negative feelings.D. Harmful prducts build up in ur brains.
30. What des the underlined wrd “was reversed” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Paused fr a while.B. Speeded up rapidly.
C. Was repeated again.D. Changed in directin.
31. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. Attentinal Failures: A Surce f Annyance.
B. Sleep Lss: A Threat t Fcus and Brain Health.
C. Unable t Cncentrate: A Prtective Brain Mechanism.
D. Cerebrspinal Fluid: A Key t Brain’s Nightly Cleaning.
C 29. B 30. D 31. C
根据第一段“Or yu’re driving hme and realize that the exit yu were suppsed t take frm the highway is 30 secnds behind yu.(或者你开车回家时,发现本该驶出高速公路的出口已经开过30秒了。)”
根据第三段“Far frm being the result f ur brain’s “neglect” in failing t keep us alert, the lapses (失效) f attentin that we experience after a sleepless night are actually a sign that ur brains are wrking hard t prevent damage that lst sleep — whether vluntary r therwise — might bring abut.(一夜无眠后,我们出现的注意力不集中,绝非大脑“疏忽大意”、未能让我们保持警觉所致;事实上,这是大脑在竭力工作的信号——它在预防失眠(无论是否出于自愿)可能造成的损伤。)”
根据第五段“Surprisingly, immediately after each lapse began, a pulse f cerebrspinal fluid flwed utward frm the brain, and just as the lapse ended, the prcess was reversed, and the fluid flwed back int the brain — a flw pattern that strngly resembled the cleaning prcess the brain underges while we are sleeping.(令人惊讶的是,每次注意力不集中的情况一开始,一股脑脊液就会从大脑向外流动;而当这种状态结束时,这一过程was reversed,脑脊液回流至大脑 —— 这种流动模式与我们睡觉时大脑所经历的清理过程极为相似。)”
通读全文特别是第一段“Yu experience a sleepless night, and the next day yu find yurself in a meeting, reaching fr an answer t a questin frm yur supervisr that yu failed t hear. Or yu’re driving hme and realize that the exit yu were suppsed t take frm the highway is 30 secnds behind yu.(如果你一夜未眠,第二天开会时,主管问了个问题,你却没听清,只能苦思冥想答案;或是开车回家时,才发现本该驶离高速公路的出口,已经错过30秒了。)”

This weekend I had the pleasure f seeing the Latvian animated film Flw in the theater. I’d never heard f it, but all f the ther ptins were sequels(续集) r Christmas mvies. Flw had a great trailer(预告片), excellent reviews, and wn many awards. I was sld.
It is abut the adventures f a black cat, a yellw dg, and several ther animals that band tgether t survive a catastrphic fld. There are n peple in the film. In fact, there is n dialgue at all in the hur and a half.
Yu wuld think that a mvie withut any human characters r dialgue wuld be bring. Well, Flw is anything BUT. On the cntrary, I was ften n the edge f my seat, terrified fr the danger these little guys faced. They’re cnstantly escaping enemies and rising water. Eventually, ur black cat finds himself in a new land. At the start f the mvie he is alne, but by the end he is surrunded by new friends.
What, if anything, des this mvie “mean”? Clearly, ne f the basic themes is unity — different species that initially dn’t get alng eventually learn t help each ther survive. But I think the fact that humans are cmpletely absent seems intentinal. The animals pass thrugh run-dwn, abandned twns, implying that humanity may have been wiped ut by a disaster. Cmbined with the fld, this suggests a metaphr abut climate change and sea level rise. The mvie’s metaphrs are subtle: water is an ever-present symbl in the film, and it is cnstantly flwing frward, pushing the actin and ur characters. With the title literally named FLOW, temprariness seems t be the main message: things cnstantly changing, the wrld mves n. We ften can’t cntrl strms f life. What we can cntrl are ur wn actins. Yu can chse t fight the current r g with it and make the best f what yu find dwn river.
Or it culd mean smething else cmpletely different t yu! Like the best pems, this mvie is pen t multiple interpretatins.
32. What initially mtivated the authr t watch the film Flw?
A. Recmmendatins frm strangers.B. Curisity abut an unknwn mvie.
C. Its psitive receptin and many awards.D. Its unique theme cncerning animals.
33. Which f the fllwing is a distinctive feature f Flw?
A. It cntains n spken dialgue.B. It invlves mre than human characters.
C. It is a shrt animatin within 90 minutes.D. It is primarily a Christmas-themed stry.
34. In the authr’s pinin, what des humans’ absence frm the film imply?
A. The difficulty f survival.B. The lss f humanity.
C. The unpredictability f life.D. The unity f diverse species.
35. Where is the text prbably frm?
A. A textbk n animatin.B. An ec-tur jurnal.
C. An entertainment website.D. An editrial n glbal warming.
