I’m Isaias Hernandez. Fr me, envirnmental educatin didn’t begin in a classrm. It began at hme with my
mther. As a first-generatin ecnmically disadvantaged Mexican-American, knwledge was a tl fr life and
curisity was my guide. Befre public schl and textbks, my mther was my first teacher. She reminded us that
Spanish wasn’t just a language. It was a gift. Learning t write and speak it meant cnnecting t ur rts and
understanding the beautiful blend f languages and cultures arund the wrld.
My early relatinship with envirnmentalism was frmed thrugh small mments. I didn’t grw up ging n
nature hikes r camping trips. I grew up falling in lve with the Discvery Channel and Nat Ge, studying animals
and ecsystems I had never tuched. I saw bilgists, cnservatinists, and envirnmental strytellers n screen. I
admired them. I quietly dreamed f ding what they did. But a part f me believed I culd never d that. I wasn’t
smart enugh. I believed that kids like me grwing up in pverty weren’t meant t be n screen, let alne in science.
Years later, I graduated frm UC Berkeley with a degree in Envirnmental Science. But I didn’t stp there. I
wanted t create smething f my wn. I built QueerBrwnVegan, a digital hme cnnecting envirnmental
educatin, strytelling, and cultural memry. What started as ne page became a cmmunity — a space where
peple wh lked like me, felt like me, and dreamed like me culd learn, grw, and express envirnmentalism in
their wn vice.
Eventually, that dream I had as a kid came back. But I knew I culdn’t wait fr smene t discver me. S I
made my wn shw. I launched a digital web series called Teaching Climate Tgether — a DIY prject with a
visin bigger than the cst, driven by strytelling, passin, and a camera that never stpped recrding.

Living n a faraway river island in nrthern Bangladesh, 67-year-ld Abdul Jalil had believed he wuld die

farmers.
In respnse, the nn-gvernmental rganizatin FRIENDSHIP perates flating hspital ships that bring free

trained as cmmunity health wrkers t spread awareness and prvide basic medicines. “Yu cannt have the same
healthcare system in cities and these unreachable areas. Yu must adapt it t lcal realities,” Khan explained.
It has been nearly tw decades since Khan changed a dnated il tanker int the first flating hspital, but she
still remembered hw almst everyne arund her at first thught the idea wuld fail. “I was tld it’s impssible,
but I knew a nrmal hspital wuldn’t help,” she said. Tday, the apprach has been widely praised as a new mdel
that culd guide ther natins facing climate threats.
Nevertheless, a lack f awareness n the chars hampers their effrts. “Many dn’t realize that simple
peratins culd end their islatin,” said a staff member. This unwillingness was clear in the case f 8-year-ld
Shariful, wh brke his hand. And his father, fearing his sn might lse the arm, hesitated fr days befre finally
trusting the dctrs. After a successful peratin, his father reflected, “I realized the dctrs were making sense.
My sn is much better nw.”

We all knw that water is tasteless. But it happens frm time t time: yu pick up the bttle f water yu didn’
t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Mst ften, yu tend t drp the bttle in the trash bin, believing that the
water has gne bad. But is it true?
Accrding t Time, f curse nt, taste has little t d with quality f water. As is mentined in Time, when
water is expsed t the air fr 12 hurs, carbn dixide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value
lwers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.
“But it’s mst likely safe t drink,” Nrwegian expert Truls Krgh tld Science Nrdic. “If the water is
cvered and f gd quality t start with, in principle it can last a thusand years. That’s because when water is
fresh, it cntains little rganic matter. As lng as water is held in clean glasses r bttles, n pllutants will enter it
t harm ur health.”
Peple in cuntries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. Accrding t Time, if tap water
is drunk within six mnths, the chlrine (氯气) in the water will be enugh t kill any bacteria and keep it safe t
drink.
Hwever, there are als sme exceptins. If yu accidentally put yur fingers int water r stre water in
unclean cntainers day after day, micrrganism (微 生 物 ) will enter the water. With the help f surrunding
temperature, and sunlight streaming thrugh windws, these micrrganisms multiply quickly. Sner r later, the
water will be full f the unfriendly bacteria. And if yu drink the water t ften, then yu’re mre likely t be ill.
And what abut water in plastic bttles? Heat and plastic are a bad cmbinatin, US researcher Kellgg
Schwab stresses. When plastic bttles are used at high temperatures, they prduce a chemical called BPA. BPA is
smething that affects hrmnes (荷 尔 蒙 ) and research has tentatively linked it t “several health damage,
including heart disease and cancer”, Time reprted.
Schwab suggests replacing dispsable (一次性的) plastic bttles with the refillable cntainers made f metal
r glass t deal with BPA.
12. The purpse f the first paragraph is t ________.
A. intrduce a tpic B. draw a cnclusin
C. shw an example D. analyze a phenmenn
13. Which f the fllwing may Truls Krgh agree?
A. Cvered water can last fr a thusand years.
B. If the water tastes different, we shuldn’t drink it.
C. Althugh kept fresh, water may still have much rganic matter.
D. The water held in a clean cntainer is likely safe t drink.
14. Why d water micrrganisms increase in number?
A. Because the water is stred in clean cntainers.
B. Because f the surrunding temperature and sunlight.
C. Because the water cntains a lt f rganic matter.
D. Because chlrine in the water fails t kill bacteria.
15. What can be the best title f the passage?
A. Why Water Is Tasteless B. Hw t Get Clean Water
C. Des Water Really G Bad? D. Learn t Prtect Water
