They nw call it “Batesian mimicry” — the amazing skill fr survival I first saw in the whispering green f the Amazn. I am Henry Walter Bates. My stry began nt with butterflies, but as the eldest sn f a stcking (长袜) maker in Leicester. Yet, a
by’s passin fr cllecting insects and an imprtant meeting with Alfred Russel
Wallace, Darwin’s future c-therist, sent me tward what he called “the great engine f change” in the trpics.
Fr eleven years, the Amazn was my hme, my schl, and my prving
grund. I faced cnstant dangers, frm disease-carrying msquites and snakes t
flding rains. I was struck dwn by bth yellw fever and malaria. My rutine was strict: mrnings cllecting, afternns reading and preparing my finds. I was usually in bed by nine. My field jurnals, filled with detailed drawings and ntes in dark ink, were my defense against the dampness and insects. I learned the lcal languages and custms, fr withut the crucial guidance f its peple, I wuld have been cmpletely
lst in that vast wilderness.
It was a time f extrardinary variety. I brught back ver 14,000 kinds f
insects — 8,000 new t science. But the real wnder was nt the cunt, but a pattern I nticed. It started with a puzzle: why culd slw-flying butterflies like the Helicnius escape birds? Later I discvered they were pisnus and bitter-tasting. Then the
deeper truth emerged: harmless Dismrphia had evlved t cpy the bright warning clurs f the Helicnius. These mimics, avided by their natural enemies, survived t pass n their clurs. Here was evlutin by natural selectin, written plainly n butterfly wings.
I published my paper in 1862, three years after Darwin’s On the Origin f
Species. That this “mimicry”, discvered in remte jungles, culd ffer timely field supprt fr his great thery remains my prudest achievement. They say I “wrte the bk” n field study. I simply fllwed my fascinatin, ne find at a time, frm my father’s Leicester wrkshp int the heart f nature’s grandest design.

The centuries-ld practice f spreading crushed limestne (石灰石) n farmland can imprve crp yields (产量) by making sil less acidic. This custm is typically
cnsidered a surce f greenhuse gas emissins, but new findings suggest “liming” may actually help remve large amunts f CO2 frm the atmsphere.
“Liming can be a carbn surce r sink. Practical tests suggest this is a pretty
efficient carbn sink,” says Nah Planavsky at Yale University. This culd ffer new mtivatin t spread mre limestne n the wrld’s farms — but liming wn’t have this effect everywhere.
Currently, mst crushed limestne spread n fields is cunted as an emissin surce because its carbn is released as CO2 when it disslves (溶解) in acidic sil. Hwever, Tim Jesper Suhrhff, als at Yale, argues this accunting is incmplete.
Sils are very acidic due t fertiliser use and fssil-fuel pllutin, and ther alkaline (碱性的) minerals in sil will release carbn even withut limestne. He says added acidity, nt liming, is t blame fr emissins.
T accurately assess liming’s emissins, researchers shuld cmpare CO2
release and uptake with and withut liming. Suhrhff, Planavsky and clleagues
studied the Mississippi river basin, calculating the net carbn effect f liming between 1900 and 2015. They used gechemical mdels and data n sil-acidity changes frm fertiliser and liming, and cmpared results with Mississippi alkalinity measurements. Their new apprach shwed liming in this regin remved abut 300 t 400 millin
tnnes f CO2 instead f generating emissins.
Planavsky says liming culd be paired with spreading crushed vlcanic rcks n farms t remve mre CO2. Wlfram Buss at the Australian Natinal University
warns that what wrked in the Mississippi may nt wrk everywhere, as liming can be a net CO2 surce in sme systems.
The next step is t identify regins needing liming mst. Planavsky says, “It culd prmte practices aiding crp yields and remving billins f tnnes f CO2, helping lw-incme farmers wh can’t affrd ptimal liming.”
8 .What des the underlined wrd “sink” in paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
A .A place t wash hands. B .A tl fr farming.
C .A thing t absrb substances. D .A type f gelgical rck.
9.Accrding t Tim Jesper Suhrhff, what is the real cause f CO2 emissins in sil? A .Natural alkaline substances.
B .Crushed limestne disslving.
C .Fssil-fuel pllutin and fertilizer use.
D .Crushed vlcanic rck spreading.
10 .What is the next step fr liming research?
A .Stpping liming in acidic sil. B .Finding areas mst in need f liming.
C .Reducing csts fr all farmers. D .Expanding vlcanic rck use glbally.
11 .What is the main idea f the passage?
A .Liming has been increasing greenhuse gases.
B .Reducing sil acidity benefits crp prductin.
C .Glbal agriculture shuld universally adpt liming.
D .New studies indicate liming’s ptential CO2 absrptin

Each year, mre than 1.2 billin new smartphnes are prduced wrldwide.
This prcess cnsumes vast amunts f energy and natural resurces, while als
generating huge quantities f electrnic waste, as peple ften replace perfectly
functinal devices every few years. T address this challenge, researchers have
prpsed a new apprach — repurpsing ld phnes int small-scale data centers fr practical use.
“Innvatin ften begins nt with smething new, but with a new way f
thinking abut the ld,” said Huber, an assciate prfessr at MIT. The research team shwed that utdated smartphnes can be effectively transfrmed int tiny data
centers capable f prcessing and string data fr real-wrld applicatins. They als discvered that building such a system is surprisingly inexpensive — abut 8 eurs per device — making it a highly affrdable slutin.
In their experiment, the scientists carefully remved the batteries t avid
chemical leakage and cnnected fur ld phnes using 3D- printed cases. The system was pwered externally and tested in practical envirnments. One successful trial
invlved underwater sea life mnitring, where the device autmatically recrded and analyzed marine species — a task that usually requires divers. With this new device, the entire prcess culd be dne autmatically underwater.
These repurpsed devices hld prmise fr a wide range f smart city
applicatins. Fr instance, they culd be installed (安装) at bus stps t mnitr
passenger flw and help urban planners ptimize transprtatin schedules and rutes, making public transprt run mre smthly and reducing waiting time fr passengers. This methd nt nly reduces e-waste but als supprts sustainable digital slutins fr mdern cmmunities.
“This is a smart, green rethink f ur thrwaway tech culture. Sustainability is nt nly abut prtecting the future — it is abut reimagining the present, where
yesterday’s devices becme tmrrw’s pprtunities,” added Ulrich, an Assciate Prfessr f Sftware Engineering. With mdest investment and creative thinking,
utdated technlgy can serve new purpses, cntributing t a greener digital sciety while helping t slve the grwing prblem f electrnic waste.

When I pened my hand, the bird did nt fly away; she sat lking at me with her bright eyes. I remved the sticky spider-webs that cvered her head and wings.
Still, she made n attempt t fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the windw t lng and was t tired? Or t thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path tward my car where I kept a water bttle, she began t mve. I stpped, and she sn tk wing but did nt immediately fly away.
Hvering (悬停), she apprached within six inches f my face. Fr a very lng mment, this tiny creature lked int my eyes, turning her head frm side t side.
Then she flew quickly ut f sight.
During the ckut, I tld my hsts abut the hummingbird incident. They
