In 2013, at 79, Jane Gdall helped return a chimpanzee(黑猩猩) named Wunda t the wild. As Wunda stepped nervusly ut f her cage, she suddenly leapt int Gdall’s arms, hugging and kissing her — a mment f pure grace that Gdall wuld carry frever. It felt like a thank yu frm all chimpanzees.
Fr decades, Gdall had lived amng chimpanzees in Gmbe. She had watched them swing and feast in the trees, delighted when they n lnger ran away frm her, and cherished the day when David, a gray-bearded chimpanzee, gently reached ut t hld her hand. But what amazed Gdall mst was when she saw David prepare a grass stem t fish — he was making tls. That single bservatin erased the line between humans and animals, shaking anthrplgy t its cre. She had n scientific training. Drawn t Africa since childhd by Tarzan’s tales, she arrived in 1957 and, urged by Luis Leakey, immersed herself in the wild. Over 25 years, her careful recrds made her the wrld’s fremst authrity n chimpanzees.
Her naming f them unsettled sme f the scientists wh preferred cld numbers. But Gdall culd nt reduce them t digits. They were individuals — Gliath, the fallen king; William, scarred and gentle, whm she nursed thrugh fever; Figan, bright and brave. She nted every gesture, every call, every curius lk directed at her, a pale stranger ddly blessed with endless bananas.
In 1990, she returned, nly t find that Gmbe’s brders were ruined — trees felled, earth barren, villagers desperate. Humans, gifted with language and fresight, shuld have been nature’s guardians. They were nt. In 2002, she became a UN Messenger f Peace, thugh she preferred “messenger f hpe”. Frm her yuth, she had sensed a purpse. In Gmbe, she fund it. Amng the shuts and screams, she wuld stp t watch sunlight pass thrugh the treetps — mments that carried her beynd time, int life’s deep mystery. Hpeful and fearless, she knew her next great adventure awaited: dying.
      24. What des Wunda’s hug f Gdall indicate?
      A. It was a carefully trained behavir.
      B. It was nt their very first encunter.
      C. It represented gratitude frm the chimpanzee.

      B. Chimpanzees are mre active than expected.
      C. Chimpanzees master varius hunting techniques.
      D. Chimpanzees naturally prefer t stay with humans.
      26. What d the three chimpanzees mentined in paragraph 3 suggest?
      A. Chimpanzees share similarities with humans.
      B. Gdall had genuine affectin and respect fr them.
      C. Gdall faced many challenges in her research wrk.
      D. Naming chimpanzees cntributes t scientific research.
      27. Which wrds can best describe Gdall?
      A. Hpeful and cperative. B. Prfessinal and humble.
      C. Sensitive and cnventinal.D. Determined and curageus.
      C
When danger appraches, many creatures seem t fllw the ancient prverb that “the enemy f my enemy is my friend”. Researchers have recently been finding surprising ways that animals cmmunicate with ther species in this kind f cperative defense agreement.
Fr example, a recent study in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin dcumented mre than 20 bird species n fur cntinents that make virtually identical “whining” calls when they spt brd parasites (巢寄生鸟类) such as cucks. “That call is essentially the wrd fr ‘cuck’ — gathering individuals t cme tgether against this cmmn enemy,” says study c-lead authr James Kennerley.
Brd parasites lay eggs in ther birds’ nests, tricking the hst parents int raising their chicks fr them. At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals frm a dzen r mre species attack a cuck in respnse t a chrus f whining calls, which can be s fercius that Kennerley and his clleagues need t cage the mdel cuck used in their experiments t prtect it. Otherwise the attacking birds wuld have “just cmpletely trn it int pieces”, Kennerley says.
Many birds als share a cmmn vcabulary fr enemies. Wildlife eclgist Erick Greene and thers find sngbirds and red squirrels use high-pitched “seet” calls t warn f flying hunters — t high fr the hunters t hear. If the hunter lands, they switch t “attack” calls that, as Greene puts it,“draw in the grup t drive that hunter ut.”
Mnkeys, lemurs, and chipmunks recgnize ther species’ alarm calls. In cral reefs, unrelated fish exchange visual and chemical signs t avid predatrs (捕食者). But cperative defense is nt the nly reasn fr crss-species cmmunicatin. It may help birds migrate and enhance fd intake amng mixed-species mnkey grups and dlphin grups.
“Hwever, unlike with alarm calls, researchers aren’t sure if they give warnings n purpse r just randmly fllw ther birds. But clearly, very cmplex multi-species cmmunicatin netwrks are cmmn,” Greene says. “It develps a sense f cnnectin amng animals, encuraging them t keep an eye n ne anther in their shared surrundings.”
      28. Why des the authr mentin the prverb in paragraph 1?
      A. T shw that animals are similar t humans.
      B. T explain hw animals identify their friends.
      C. T intrduce the tpic f crss-species cperatin.
      D. T prve the changeability f crss-species relatinships.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “fercius” in paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
      A. Organized. B. Intense.C. Brief. D. Cautius.
      30. What can be learned abut the cperative defense?
      A. It mainly happens amng bird species.
      B. It relies n researchers’ interventin t be effective.
      C. It invlves different species respnding t a shared threat.
      D. It requires animals t use the same type f sund t send warnings.
      31. Which f the fllwing may Greene agree with?
      A. Animals may nt signal intentinally.
      B. It’s urgent t prtect certain species’ habitats.
      C. Sngbirds tend t use lud calls t frighten away hunters.
      D. The multi-species cmmunicatin is t cmplex t track.
      D
The placeb effect, where a patient’s belief influences treatment effectiveness, was nce dismissed as unscientific but is nw recgnized as a genuine therapeutic tl. In a new study published in Nature Medicine, researchers have begun t uncver its inner wrkings by revealing that psitive expectatins can bst the immune (免疫的) system’s respnse t vaccinatin (疫苗接种).
T explre the brain’s rle in immunity, researchers frm Tel Aviv University fcused n the meslimbic netwrk, a brain regin assciated with reward-related behavir and als knwn as an area linked t immune functin in mice. They gathered 85 vlunteers fr brain training that allwed them t influence nervus prcesses nrmally utside cnscius cntrl.
The vlunteers were divided int three grups; ne trained t activate the brain’s reward system, anther trained t activate an unrelated netwrk, and a third that received n training. Each grup cmpleted fur sessins, in which thse in training grups develped and imprved their individual strategies t shift activity t the assigned regin. Immediately after the final sessin, everyne received a hepatitis B vaccinatin.
Bld tests shwed a strng cnnectin between brain activity and the immune system. Higher activity in a brain regin linked t pleasure and reward was assciated with higher antibdy levels. The researchers suggest this is the first direct evidence f a brain-immune regulatry (调节) system in humans.
The researchers fund that sustained activity in the ventral tegmental area f the brain was specifically linked t psitive expectatins — hpeful thughts abut the future — and that this cnnectin strengthened with training. In cntrast, general psitive emtins, such as pleasure r lve, did nt display such a relatinship. The team’s research prvides cnvincing evidence fr the brain’s influence n physilgy (生理学), and als helps t understand the bilgical mechanism f the placeb effect itself. Psitive expectatins have lng been linked t placeb respnses, but researchers have nw bserved their specific rle. While mre trials are needed, this brain-bdy link gives a ptentially underused clinical tl a firmer scientific basis.
      32. What des the study published in Nature Medicine mainly find?
      A. The placeb effect is unscientific t sme extent.
      B. Psitive thinking can imprve the bdy’s defense.
      C. The meslimbic netwrk is directly linked t immune functin.
      D. Brain training is an effective way t influence nervus prcesses.
      33. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A. The prcess f the experiment.
      B. The standard fr participant selectin.
      C. The wide variety f vlunteers’ strategies.
      D. The difficulty in cntrlling brain activity.
      34. What is the significance f the research?
      A. It supprts the clinical use f the placeb effect.
      B. It shws training strengthens general psitive emtins.
      C. It explains hw pleasure directly influences physilgy.
      D. It identifies the brain activity linked t psitive expectatins.
      35. Which wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Hepatitis B: Vaccinatin Saves Lives
      B. Brain Training: Thughts Affect Health
      C. The Placeb Effect: Mind Influences Bdy
      D. The Placeb Effect: Immunity Prmtes Happiness

“We’re ging in!” David said.“Wanna cme?” He didn’t have t ask me twice, because I immediately kicked ff my shes and grabbed my sunglasses. Tgether, we ran ahead and splashed int the cean. Sn we were all in water up t ur thighs.
The bys rde the waves rlling int the shre, which is certainly nt a game fr a grandfather like me. S I std there still, happy t watch them belly surf and tumble (翻滚) arund. Each wave gently lifted me befre setting me back dwn.
The bys swam back ut fr the next wave. It passed me first, lifting me up. A big ne. I lengthened my ft, my tes ready t tuch the cean flr as I came dwn. I stretched in search f the bttm but nthing appeared. By that mment, I hadn’t realized the cean had been pulling me slwly away frm the beach. A rip current. Nt gd.
I tried my best t swim twards the bys, wh were clser t the shre. In a few strkes (划水), I’d surely be able t stand again. But n matter hw hard I tried, I didn’t seem t be getting clser t the beach.
