At fifteen, I was sent, against my will, t a muntain-climbing camp in the Rckies. My fear f heights left me rted t the grund, but my parents insisted the experience wuld “build character.” On the first mrning, ur instructr, Sarah, gathered us, at the base f the muntain. “This climb isn’t abut speed r strength,” she tld us. “It’s abut listening t yur bdy, the
muntain, and yur teammates.” I rlled my eyes, believing that reaching the tp was the nly measure that mattered.
My teammate Jake, a cnfident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at my careful and slw
pace. “Yu’re wasting time!” he yelled. By midday, hwever, his cnfidence began t break. Jake slipped n a narrw ledge (岩脊), shaking frm thirst and muscle pain. Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, drank water every 15 minutes, and studied the rck frmatins. When strm cluds
darkened the sky, fear struck me. Sarah’s vice eched in my mind: “Cntrl what yu can. Let g f what yu can’t.”
The final part f the rute challenged everyne. Jake fell behind, n lnger speaking,
clearly discuraged. I fcused n three steps: plant, pull, and breathe. When I finally reached the tp, strng wind hit my face as I lked dwn at the valley belw. Jake stepped clser, his vice unsteady. “I wanted t prve I was the best,” he admitted: “But I frgt t respect the muntain and didn’t get fully prepared.” That mment reshaped my understanding f grwth — it wasn’t abut reaching the tp, but abut being humble (谦卑的) and patient alng the way.
Years later, as a guide, I teach philsphy at a high schl. One student recently asked,
“What if I fail?” I smiled. “Failure isn’t falling; it’s refusing t learn why yu fell.” Muntains mirrr life’s struggles: unpredictable, demanding, yet transfrmative Every
struggle and setback makes us strnger. The real tp isn’t a place; it’s the wisdm we carry back t the wrld belw.
4 .What was the authr’s attitude twards Sarah’s wrds n the first mrning?
      A .Jyful. B .Dubtful. C .Supprtive. D .Puzzled.

Thrughut histry, trees have played a crucial rle in maintaining eclgical balance.
They absrb CO2 and transfrm it int xygen. But ne f the challenges with this traditinal
carbn absrptin is that the CO2 trees stre can be released back int the atmsphere when they die.
Hwever, the discvery f certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimensin t this natural
prcess. These trees, als fund in several ther cuntries, have been bserved t transfrm CO2 int calcium xalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and surrunding sil transfrm it further int calcium carbnate (碳酸钙), a primary cmpnent f limestne and chalk. The unique
prcess ensures that the CO2 is kept in slid frm fr much lnger, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rwley frm the University f Zurich at the Gldschmidt Cnference.
While the scientific cmmunity is ptimistic abut these findings, several challenges
remain. The primary cncern is determining the exact amunt f CO2 that these trees can
transfrm thrughut their lifetime. Withut this accurate data, it is challenging t assess the full impact f this methd glbally. Understanding the eclgical balance and ensuring the
preservatin f bidiversity are crucial befre wrldwide planting f these trees. Cperative research effrts are needed t explre these aspects and develp a cmprehensive strategy fr using these trees as a natural slutin t climate change.
This discvery in Kenya invites us t recnsider the ptential f natural prcesses in
addressing envirnmental challenges. While technlgical slutins t climate change are vital, integrating natural methds ffers an alternative apprach. The unique ability f these trees
presents a prmising methd fr explratin.
The jurney t fighting climate change is cmplex. As we dig deeper int understanding natural phenmena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask urselves: Hw can we make the best f the pwer f nature t create a sustainable future fr generatins t cme?
8 .What is special abut the trees fund in Kenya?
A .They help turn CO2 int slids. B .They can absrb mre CO2.
C .They can release xygen quickly. D .They live in harmny with bacteria.
9 .Why is the accurate data n CO2 transfrmatin f the trees imprtant?
A .T grw mre trees in Kenya quickly.
B .T carry ut mre cperative researches.
C .T keep the eclgical balance and increase bidiversity.
D .T evaluate the glbal impact f the CO2 transfrmatin.
10 .What des the authr try t explre in the last tw paragraphs?
A .The methd f green develpment. B .The rle f nature in climate slutins.
C .The prspect f scientific appraches. D .The seriusness f glbal climate change.
11 .What des the passage tell us?
A .Kenyan trees are a natural carbn lck.
B .A defensive strategy in nature is fund.
C .Tree planting is a key t eclgical balance.
D .A recent advance in CO2 research is achieved.

Walking arund my neighbrhd, I was hit by the smells f summer, which brught ut treasured memries frm my yuth. As a scial psychlgist, I shuldn’t feel surprised t
experience this warm feeling. My research fcuses n nstalgia (怀旧) and hw it is clsely cnnected t ur well-being.
In 1922, the French nvelist Marcel Prust wrte abut the strength f smells and fds t bring ut nstalgia. He described hw the experience f smelling and eating a cake mentally
transprted him back t childhd experiences with his aunt in her hme. This srt f experience is nw ften referred t as the Prust effect
Science has cnfirmed what Prust described. The sensry system respnsible fr ur sense f smell is clsely cnnected t brain structures that deal with emtins and persnal life memry. Fds als tend t be central t scial gatherings, making them easily cnnected with these
memries. Fr instance, a hmemade pumpkin pie may be an imprtant dessert at many Thanksgiving tables.
My research team and I wanted t knw hw peple benefit frm feeling nstalgic when they encunter the smells and fds f their past. We began in 2011 by presenting study
participants with 33 smells and chse 12 f them fr ur study. Participants rated sme smells,
such as pumpkin pie spice (香料), as highly likely t cause nstalgia, while rating thers — such as mney and cffee — as less likely. Thse wh experienced mre nstalgia when smelling the smells experienced greater psitive emtins and greater feelings f cnnectin t their past
      selves.
We came t similar cnclusins when we studied nstalgia fr fds. Fds seemed t be mre strngly tied t nstalgia than smells when we cmpared the amunt f nstalgia ur
participants experienced fr fds with what previus research participants experienced fr smells.
Althugh nstalgia can be cnnected with fds that shuld be eaten nly in limited
amunts — such as burgers and ckies — there are ther ways t channel ur nstalgia thrugh fds. We fund that participants experienced the benefits f fd-related nstalgia just frm
imagining and writing abut the fds — n cnsumptin necessary. Other researchers have fund that even drawing cmfrting fds can imprve well-being.
12 .What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A .The influence f nstalgia. B .The scial functin f fds.
C .The rigin f the Prust effect. D .The scientific analysis f the Prust effect.
13 .What des the authr’s research find?
A .Fds play a key rle in survival. B .Nstalgia increases psitive emtins.
C .Nstalgia is a universal experience. D .Peple have different smell preferences.
14 .What des the authr d in the last paragraph?
A .Issue a warning. B .Give practical suggestins.
C .Add a further explanatin. D .Change the tpic f discussin.
15 .Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A .The Prust Effect Imprves Cnnectins B .Imagining and Writing Lead t Nstalgia
C.Nstalgia Prvides Many Benefits t Peple D.Nstalgic Fds and Smells Bring Well-Being

I was always cautius arund Ted. He was the quietest kid in ur class, barely speaking t anyne. When he did say smething, his wrds came ut blunt and were easily misinterpreted by thers. Rumrs (谣言) abut him spread like wildfire — sme claimed he fught after schl,

Then, ne Friday mrning, Ted didn’t shw up fr class. Rumrs abut why he wasn’t there flew instantly. “He gt suspended (停课),” murmured a girl next t me. “Wrd is that he punched smene utside the library.” I wasn’t surprised at all and just ndded in quiet agreement.
Later that day, I went t enjy the first warm day f spring at the park where I saw Ted
sitting alne n the swings. His usual defensive expressin was gne, and replaced by smething I hadn’t expected: sadness. I walked ver with curisity, nticing a wrinkled piece f paper in his

根据第一段中“On the first mrning, ur instructr, Sarah, gathered us, at the base f the muntain. “This climb isn’t abut speed r strength,” she tld us. “It’s abut listening t yur bdy, the muntain, and yur teammates.” I rlled my eyes, believing that reaching the tp was the nly measure that mattered.
My teammate Jake, a cnfident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at
      “ ’ ”
my careful and slw pace. Yu re wasting time! he yelled.
和第三段中 Jake 所说的话“But I frgt t respect the muntain and didn’t get fully prepared.
Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, drank water every 15
      minutes, and studied the rck frmatins. 36.
故填 was brught。

      t guess。
故填 The。

根据第一段“I didn’t knw what was true, but I stayed away, just like the rest.(我不知道哪些是真的,但我和其他人一样,都疏远他。)”
根据第二段“Then, ne Friday mrning, Ted didn’t shw up fr class. Rumrs abut why he wasn’t there flew instantly.(后来,一个周五的早上,泰德没来上课。
      absent。
根据第二段“I wasn’t surprised at all and just ndded in quiet agreement.(我一点也不惊讶,只是默默点头表示认同。)”
根据第三段“Later that day, I went t enjy the first warm day f spring at the park where I saw Ted sitting alne n the swings. His usual defensive expressin was gne, and replaced by
根据第三段“I walked ver with curisity, nticing a wrinkled piece f paper in his hand.(我好奇地走了过去,注意到他手里拿着一张皱巴巴的纸。)”
根据第五段““She’s been sick fr mnths,” Ted explained, his vice barely heard.(“她已经病了好几个月了。”
It ccurred t me then hw wrng we had all been abut Ted. The tugh utward
appearance, the distance — he wasn’t trying t push peple away.(就在那时,我才意识到我们所有人都完全误解了泰德。
It ccurred t me then hw wrng we had all been abut Ted. The tugh utward appearance, the distance — he wasn’t trying t push peple
determine 是动词,表示“决定”,be determined t d sth.

after her all night.”(“她已经病了好几个月了,” 泰德解释道,声音轻得几乎听不见。 Because his mther had
t wrk, he had t lk after his sick sister all night。
Ted returned t schl n Mnday, but rumrs
及“I culd n lnger bear the
I wuld tell my classmates the truth abut Ted and his sick sister t stp the rumrs, and help them understand Ted better。
It ccurred t me then hw wrng we had all been abut Ted. The tugh utward appearance, the distance — he wasn’t trying t push peple away. He was
      carrying a weight nne f us understd.(就在那时,我才意识到我们所有人都错看了泰德。 I wuld reflect n my way f judging thers. I wuld learn that I shuldn’t judge
