A grup f blue-faced birds step thrugh the grass shulder t shulder, red eyes lking arund. They lk like middle schlers seeking a cafeteria table at lunchtime. Perhaps they're nt s different.
A new study, led by Damien Farine, an rnithlgist wh studies cllective behaviur, shws that the vulturine guineafwl f eastern Africa, like humans, have multilevel scieties. In the past, scientists assumed such scial structures required a lt f brainpwer. But the pea-brained guineafwl are revealing the faults in that assumptin.
These large birds wander acrss the landscape in packs, ften walking s clsely that their bdies tuch. They may fight each ther t maintain their strict hierarchies (等级制度), but at ther times they engage in friendly behaviurs like sharing fd.
Suspecting the guineafwl might have a scial structure, Dr. Farine and his clleagues began a thrugh study f their sciety. Fr a whle year, they made daily bservatins f 441 birds. Clured leg bands in unique cmbinatins let researchers tell the black-and-blue birds apart. They als attached GPS devices t the backs f 58 birds, which let them see exactly where every grup went, 24 hurs a day.
The findings f the research suggest that the vulturine guineafwl have a multilevel sciety. There are grups within grups within the ppulatin as a whle. There even seem t be grups f friends within the small grups. This is the first time anyne has bserved such a sciety in a bird.
And Dr. Farine emphasizes this particular bird's tiny brain size: "They dn't nly have small brains relative t mammals (哺乳动物), they als have quite small brains relative t ther birds," he said.
Accrding t him, living in this kind f sciety might actually make it easier t keep track f the scial rder. Fr example, if grups are stable and a bird can identify just ne r tw individuals within a grup, it knws which grup it's lking at—n need fr a brain that can recgnize every single animal. Multilevel scieties als let animals adjust their grup sizes based n whatever challenges they're facing. Depending n what enemies r resurces are arund, it might make sense t travel in a cmbined grup rather than a smaller ne.
"Having a multilevel structure may nt require having a large brain," Dr. Farine said. There may be mre birds and ther animals ut there that, althugh small-brained, have scieties as many-leveled as ur wn.
5.Accrding t the passage, what inspired Dr. Farine t carry ut the study?
      A. The guineafwl's scial behaviur.
      B. Previus assumptins abut birds.
      C. His interest in animal brainpwer.
      D. The faults in earlier research.
6.What is Paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. The research subjects.B. The research methds.
      C. The research findings.D. The research equipment.
7.What can be learned frm the passage?
      A. Cmplex scial systems can be a disadvantage t the guineafwl.
      B. The guineafwl are gd at recgnizing individuals in a grup.
      C. Birds maintain scial rder by travelling in cmbined grups.
      D. Small-brained animals can frm multilevel scieties.
8.What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T present the findings f a study f the guineafwl.
      B. T explain the interactin patterns in multilevel scieties.
      C. T intrduce a new apprach t bserving the guineafwl.
      D. T uncver clues abut hw cmplex scieties are frmed.

Fr several decades, there has been an extensive and rganized campaign intended t generate distrust in science, funded by thse whse interests and idelgies are threatened by the findings f mdern science. In respnse, scientists have tended t stress the success f science. After all, scientists have been right abut mst things.
Stressing successes isn't wrng, but fr many peple it's nt persuasive. An alternative answer t the questin "Why trust science?" is that scientists use the s-called scientific methd. If yu've gt a high schl science textbk lying arund, yu'll prbably find that answer in it. But what is typically thught t be the scientific methd—develp a hypthesis (假设), then design an experiment t test it—isn't what scientists actually d. Science is dynamic: new methds get invented; ld nes get abandned; and smetimes, scientists can be fund ding many different things.
If there is n identifiable scientific methd, then what is the reasn fr trust in science? The answer is hw thse claims are evaluated. The cmmn element in mdern science, regardless f the specific field r the particular methds being used, is the strict scrutiny (审查) f claims. It's this tugh, sustained prcess that wrks t make sure faulty claims are rejected. A scientific claim is never accepted as true until it has gne thrugh a lengthy "peer review" because the reviewers are experts in the same field wh have bth the right and the bligatin (责任) t find faults.
A key aspect f scientific judgment is that it is dne cllectively. N claim gets accepted until it has been vetted by dzens, if nt hundreds, f heads. In areas that have been cntested, like climate science and vaccine safety, it's thusands. This is why we are generally justified in nt wrrying t much if a single scientist, even a very famus ne, disagrees with the claim. And this is why diversity in science—the mre peple lking at a claim frm different angles—is imprtant.
Des this prcess ever g wrng? Of curse. Scientists are humans. There is always the pssibility f revising a claim n the basis f new evidence. Sme peple argue that we shuld nt trust science because scientists are "always changing their minds." While examples f truly settled science being verturned are far fewer than is smetimes claimed, they d exist. But the beauty f this scientific prcess is that it explains what might therwise appear paradxical (矛盾的): that science prduces bth nvelty and stability. Scientists d change their minds in the face f new evidence, but this is a strength f science, nt a weakness.
9.Hw des the authr think f the scientific methd?
      A. Stable.B. Persuasive.C. Unreliable.D. Unrealistic.
10.What des the underlined wrd "vetted" in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Explained.B. Examined.C. Repeated.D. Released.
11.Accrding t the passage, the authr may agree that___________.
      A. it is nt persuasive t reject thse faulty claims
      B. settled science tends t be cllectively verturned
      C. a leading expert cannt play a decisive rle in a scrutiny
      D. diversity in knwledge is the cmmn element in science
12.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Put Yur Faith in ScienceB. Defend the Truth in Science
      C. Apply Yur Mind t ScienceD. Explre A Dynamic Way t Science

The Changing Landscape f the Music Business
The music industry is in the prcess f a great change. In the past decades, artists made mney thrugh physical sales f recrds, CDs, and cassettes. While in recent years, dwnlading sngs frm services such as Amazn r iTunes has becme the mst cmmn way fr peple t purchase music, and the whle idea f buying music t wn may be falling. T take its place are Internet apps that stream music directly t listeners n their smartphnes, tablets, r cmputers. (13) While this is great fr fans, wh nw have access t millins f sngs at the flick f a tuchscreen, it has shattered the traditinal mdel f hw an artist manages his r her career.
With music lvers increasingly mving away frm making ne-time purchases twards an all-yu-can-listen-t service, what is a hard-wrking artist t d? The main prblem facing many musicians is that payments-per-stream f a sng are much lwer than what an artist wuld receive frm a dwnlad. (14) In Nvember f 2014, award-winning musician Taylr Swift pulled her entire music catalg frm Sptify, a ppular streaming app, claiming that their business mdel suggests that music des nt hld much wrth.
      (15) They claim that it ffers smaller artists a chance fr their music t get heard by a wider audience. Brian Message, manager f the band Radihead, has cme ut in supprt f streaming services. He sees them as a way fr musicians and fans t interact.
Regardless f what artists may think abut this change in the music industry, there’s n arguing that they need t adapt in rder t make mney. (16)
Crprate spnsrship can be a risky ptin fr musicians. A band can make much mney by agreeing t prmte a prduct r license its music fr use in advertisements, but there are many ways that this can backfire. When bands wrk with businesses, they may lse the image they have wrked t create. (17) Artists must develp an image that appeals t their fans in rder t remain unique and authentic, r they risk striking .the wrng chrd, which culd leave them struggling t sustain careers in this new business landscape.
A.Others have welcmed the idea f streaming music.
B.Hwever, thse frms f media are quickly fading away.
C.Sme big-name artists have called attentin t the issue.
D.The rules culd be different fr smaller bands just starting ut.
E.Maintaining a fine image while wrking n a career is certainly tricky.
F.One majr shift is the grwth in partnership between artists and businesses.

      Digital Inclusin fr Older Adults
As a researcher in the behavir f lder adults, I regularly hear cmplaints frm them like, “I’m just nt part f this wrld anymre. In certain parts f sciety, I just can’t jin... Sme things just are nt pssible if yu are nt in the flw f the Internet.” r “We feel like we’re standing utside a building that we have nt access t.”
Tday, mastering digital technlgy has becme a key cmpnent f what it means t fully participate in sciety. But ne area in particular threatens t prevent sme lder adults frm making cnnectins: the digital divide.
As a recent study shws, ne-third f adults aged 65 and lder say they’ve never used the Internet, and half dn’t have Internet access at hme. Of thse wh d use the Internet, nearly half say they need smene else’s help t set up r use a new digital device.
In cntrast t cncerns abut technlgy use increasing islatin (孤立;隔离) amng yunger ppulatins, the cmmunicatin and cnnectin pssible nline can be especially valuable fr lder adults wh are hmebund, live far away frm family, r have lst the lved nes. Older adults can use nline tls t cnnect with friends and family via messaging platfrms, vide chat, and scial media even if they can n lnger physically visit them. And they can engage with the utside wrld thrugh news, blgs, streaming platfrms, and email, even if they are n lnger able t mve abut as easily as they nce culd.
Fr lder adults in particular, the risks assciated with scial islatin are prfund. Lneliness amng lder adults has been assciated with depressin, functinal decline, and death. Technlgy can serve as an imprtant tl t help reduce these risks, but nly if we prvide lder adults with the skills they need, t make inclusin in the digital wrld accessible t them.
The imprtance f digital inclusin is nt ging t disappear with the generatinal changes f the cming decades. Technlgy is cntinuusly develping, and with each new digital innvatin cme challenges fr even yunger adults t adapt.
