In Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady River, there is a grup f Irrawaddy dlphins that are
best-knwn fr giving a special signal — a wave f their tail — right befre the fishers shuld cast nets. They even passed this skill n t their babies.
“This is a pretty rare phenmenn in terms f human and wildlife cperatin. S, we’re nt nly cnserving n a species level, but als n a cultural level,” says Brian Smith, a river
dlphin expert. “It’s a lessn t humanity abut ur relatinship with wildlife.”
The Irrawaddy dlphins have anther less-knwn trick: They spit water. It’s nt just fr fun, thugh. They use it t drive fish int tight grups s they’re easier t catch. Sme scientists even think they might d it t impress a ptential mate.
The Irrawaddy dlphins are ne f the nly six species that can live in freshwater. But they can als inhabit castal waters — a quality shared by even fewer species. Their range includes
parts f castal waters f Suth and Sutheast Asia, as well as three specific rivers: the Mekng in
Cambdia, the Mahakam in Indnesia, and the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar. While the species as a whle is listed as endangered by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature (IUCN), the ppulatins in these three rivers are cnsidered critically endangered, with fewer than 100
individuals estimated in each.
These rivers and castal areas are ften clse t intense human activity, s they face serius threats frm pllutin, habitat lss, cal-carrying ships, and illegal electr-fishing — a practice in which fishers send electric currents thrugh the water t kill fish. Electr-fishing nt nly
dramatically reduces the fish ppulatins that dlphins rely n, but it can als injure r kill the dlphins.
“Withut urgent actin, these cperative, curius creatures culd disappear frever, much like the Yangtze dlphins, which disappeared frm China’s waters in 2006, despite cnservatin effrts, as well as Mexic’s Vaquita dlphins, dwn t arund 10 individuals,” warns Smith.

30 .What des the authr intend t d by mentining the electr-fishing?

Kids wh are stars seldm grw up t be tp achievers, a new study reprted in a paper published Thursday in the jurnal Science.
The researchers examined data frm nearly 35,000 adults in tw dzens f previusly
published studies and fund there was just a 10% verlap (重叠) between child prdigies and high - perfrming adults, such as Olympic champins, renwned cmpsers, and Nbel prize winners.
“There are thse yung tp perfrmers wh later becme wrld-class perfrmers at peak perfrmance age,” said Arne Güllich, c - authr f the paper. “But these are the exceptin, nt the rule.”
The researchers defined peak years as being between ages 20 and 30 fr sprts and chess, and between ages 40 and 50 fr science and music. The findings were cnsistent acrss varius fields.
The new analysis als challenged ideas that excellence cmes frm hurs f specialized
early training, r the “10,000-hur rule” ppularized by Malclm Gladwell. The rule suggests that a persn needs abut 10,000 hurs f practice t achieve mastery.
“Many peple make decisins fr themselves r their children based n these ideas, such as
starting their child early in a sprt r a musical instrument with the gal f prducing the next Tiger Wds r Y-Y Ma,” said Arne Güllich. “Hwever, ur study indicates that adult
wrld-class perfrmers d a range f activities when they were yung — with fewer practice hurs in their specific discipline but mre time in ther activities.”
Fred Oswald, a psychlgist at Rice University wh wasn’t invlved in the wrk, said the findings were infrmative, but the implicatins fr advising individuals are unclear. “Hwever, there’s a key takeaway: Encurage kids t pursue a variety f interests rather than specializing
early,” he said. “Evidence suggests that engaging in tw additinal areas t the main discipline is the sweet spt. S it’s unwise t try as many as pssible, like sampling all the instruments in
music.”
32 .Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “prdigies” in paragraph 2?
A .Geniuses. B .Caregivers.
C .Musicians. D .Trainees.
33 .Accrding t Malclm Gladwell, what is the key t mastering a skill?
A .Talent. B .Curisity.
C .Age. D .Exercise.
34 .What is a feature f the tp-perfrming adults accrding t the new study?
A .They usually stand ut in childhd.
B .They ften have a variety f interests.
C .They enjy early specialized training.
D .They set ambitius gals at an early age.
35 .What might Fred Oswald suggest parents d?
A .Allw their kids t start specialized training early.
B .Put tp pririty n a cuple f music instruments.
C .Encurage their kids t select a cuple f interests.
D .Sign up their kids fr as many activities as pssible.

step-tracking devices fr ne week t bjectively measure their activity levels. ___37___ Mst f the participants had their brain imaged t reveal their baseline levels f misflded prteins called tau (tau 蛋白) and beta-amylid, gathering f which is thught t cause Alzheimer’s. The
participants als cmpleted annual cgnitive tests that assessed things like their memry and hw quickly they prcessed infrmatin. ___38___ They fund that, amng the participants with
abve-average levels f misflded beta-amylid in their brain at the start, taking between 3,000
and 5,000 steps per day seemed t greatly slw the build-up f misflded tau, but nt beta-amylid.
“ ___39___ This activity level shwed 54% slwer cgnitive decline than inactivity,” says Yau.
The researchers didn’t explre exactly hw regular exercise may have these effects, but it culd be due t physical activity reducing inflammatin. ___40___
A .What was the result?
B .A simple walk can fight diseases.
C .The tests were nt easy t cmplete.
D .These peple were aged between 50 and 90.
