We first met Jemar in mid-Octber at San Juan Airprt. His father, Guillerm Class, had sld his car t buy plane tickets t cllect his kids and fly them up frm Puert Ric. The island was almst destryed by the deadly strm — Hurricane Maria.
They are settling int their new hme in Hartfrd’s Suth End. A week later, using his wife’s car, Guillerm drve 16-year-ld Jemar t his first day at Bulkeley High Schl. After a shrt ride, he gt ut in frnt f his new schl. Inside, he met Gretchen Levitz — the schl’s prgram directr.
“I see yu have a new unifrm,” Levitz said. “Yu lk great. Are yu ready fr a gd first day?”
Then he met a cuple f teachers.
“Hell,” they each said in Spanish. They asked where he was frm, and tld him they were happy t see him. Then Levitz tk him n a quick tur f the schl befre classes began — t her ffice, the schl stre, the library, and the dining hall.

Officials in the U. S. have been mving quickly t better prtect peple frm the harmful effects f wildfire smke. Hwever, they find it mre difficult t cmmunicate these dangers t peple wh live thusands f kilmeters frm the fires. Jeff Pierce is an atmspheric scientist. He said smke lses its dr (气味), but remains harmful even when it travels lng distances. A recent study fund that peple wh live clse t fires are mre likely t be prepared.
