A new study suggests that the prspect f a difficult mental task can be as unattractive as physical pain, such as having a ht bject held n yur skin. As each letter appears, they are asked t cnfirm whether the n - screen letter matches ne that appeared earlier in the sequence; fr example, in a “tw - back” task, the participants are required t recall the letter that appeared tw psitins earlier. The farther back they’re asked t remember, the mre challenging the task becmes.

The result shwed nly ne ut f 39 participants in the study chse t perfrm the memry task every time, and fr all the thers, pain was the mre appealing ptin.
“In additin t ding the hard wrk during a task, yu’re experiencing the expectatin that yu might make a mistake,” Vgel said. “When we avid mental effrt, there’s a questin as t hw much f that avidance can be blamed n the anxiety ver getting smething wrng.” This was what they wuld further figure ut.
32. Hw des the authr present the tpic in paragraph 1?
A. By analyzing a cmmn belief.
B. By intrducing a surprising fact.
C. By illustrating a painful experience.
D. By describing the prcess f a study.

A. The number f letters n the screen.
B. The time allwed t recall the sequence.
C. The psitinal gap between matching letters.D. The speed at which letters pp up.
34. Why were different pairings f pain and effrt prvided?
A. T cnfirm the chice in extreme cases.
B. T check the pain threshlds.
C. T identify the participants' limits.
D. T cmpare chices at similar levels.
