The data was jined with light pllutin measurements frm glbal satellites. “BirdWeather made it pssible t study bird behavirs ver a large area and a lng time,” said Dr Brent.
The results shwed that fr birds in light-plluted areas, the waking day was lengthened by 50 minutes n average. Species with large eyes, relative t their bdy size, were mst affected by man-made light. “The American rbin, Nrthern mcking bird and Eurpean gldfinch all lengthened their day by mre than average,” said Brent. “Small-eyed species such as sparrws weren’t affected as much.”
The effect f a lnger waking day fr birds was nt yet clear, the researchers said. “We knw that sleep lss is nt gd fr humans, but birds are different,” said Dr Brent. “They have develped interesting strategies t deal with lss f sleep during migratry (迁徙) perids.” The change messing up hw animals naturally behave was wrrying, Dr Brent added, althugh research shwed, in sme species, that man-made lighting may give them mre time t lk fr fd and find partners and imprve the survival rate f baby birds.
