I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I culd lcate the nest, I might have been able t put it back, but n luck. My next wrk was t cnstruct a nest and anchr it in a tree.
The hmewner was very helpful. A wire basket was fund. I put sme pine branches int the basket t make this nest safe and cmfrtable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed dwn.
Nw all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the hmewner a recrding f the hunger screams f wl chicks. These advertise the presence f chicks t adults; they might als encurage ur chick t start calling as well. I gave the wner as much infrmatin as pssible and headed hme t see what news the night might bring.
A nervus night t be sure, but smetimes the spirits f nature smile n us all! The hmewner called t say that the parents had respnded t the recrdings. During my summer exchange prgram in Ri de Janeir, Brazil, I experienced a series f embarrassing yet enlightening mments caused by cultural differences in bdy language.
On my first day, my hst family greeted me with verwhelming warmth. When the father, Carls, apprached me with a strng embrace and kissed bth my cheeks, I instinctively stepped back, my bdy stiff with surprise. In my culture, such intimate (亲密的) gestures are reserved fr clse friends r family, nt ffered t strangers upn first meeting. I nticed a flicker f cnfusin n his face, which immediately made me regret my reactin.
The fllwing day, I jined sme lcal students at a café. Everyne was friendly, and the cnversatin flwed. At ne pint, a girl named Ana described her plan fr the weekend and made the “OK” hand gesture, frming a circle with her thumb and index finger. I smiled and returned the same sign, assuming it meant agreement r apprval. T my surprise, she lked startled and quickly lwered her hand. Later, a friend gently explained that in Brazil, that particular gesture is cnsidered rude and ffensive (冒犯的), similar t raising a middle finger in sme ther cultures. I felt my face burn with embarrassment.
Anther incident happened during a grup discussin. I maintained steady eye cntact t shw that I was attentive and sincere. Hwever, I nticed that my Brazilian cunterparts frequently glanced away instead f hlding my gaze. It felt as if they were disinterested r distracted (分心的). Afterwards, my hst sister tld me that in her culture,
prlnged eye cntact, especially in casual cnversatins, can be perceived (理解) as cnfrntatinal r even aggressive. They prefer sfter and shrter eye cntact t shw respect and maintain harmny.
These experiences made me realize hw easily nnverbal signals can be misread acrss cultures. I had assumed that my wn habits were universal, but I was unintentinally causing cnfusin. Since then, I have made an effrt t bserve and learn the lcal custms f any cuntry I visit. Understanding bdy language is just as imprtant as learning the language itself when it cmes t truly cnnecting with peple frm different backgrunds.

29. The underlined wrd "cnfrntatinal" in the furth paragraph mst likely means ______.
A. friendly and warmB. likely t cause argumentC. full f respectD. shy and nervus

A. Because it meant smething negative in Brazil.
B. Because he didn't say thank yu.
C. Because the girl didn't understand him.
D. Because he made the gesture incrrectly.
31. What is the main purpse f this passage?
A. T intrduce Brazilian culture and custms.
B. T explain hw t avid bdy language mistakes.
C. T describe the authr's unfrgettable travel experience.
