I was desperately nervus abut becming car - free. But eight mnths ag ur car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destryed. N prblem, I thught: we'll buy anther. But the insurance payut didn't even begin t cver the csts f buying a new car—I wrked that ut, with the lan we'd need plus petrl, insurance, parking permits and tax, we wuld make a payment as much as £600 a mnth.
And that's when I had my fancy idea. Why nt just give up having a car at all? I live in Lndn. We have a railway statin behind ur huse, a tube statin 10 minutes' walk away, and a bus stp at the end f the street. A new car club had just pened in ur area, and ne f its shiny little red Peugets was parked nearby. If any family in Britain culd live withut a car, I reasned, then surely we were that family.
But my new car - free idea, sadly, wasn't shared by my family. My teenage daughters were hrrified. What wuld their friends think abut ur family being "t pr t affrd a car"? (I wasn't that bthered what they thught, and I suggested the girls shuld take the same apprach.)
My friends, t, were astnished at ur plan. What wuld happen if smene gt seriusly ill vernight and needed t g t hspital? (an ambulance) Hw wuld the children get t and frm their many events? (buses and trains) Peple smiled as thugh this was anther f my mad ideas, befre saying they were sure I'd sn realize that a car was a necessity.
Eight mnths n, I wnder whether we'll ever wn a car again. The idea that yu "have t" wn a car, especially if yu live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many ther citizens d—in a place that has never been better served by public transprt, and yet car wnership has never been higher. We wrry abut rising car csts, but we'd be better ff asking smething much mre basic: d I really need a car? Certainly nt, and I'm a lt richer because I dared t ask the questin.
29. The authr decided t live a car - free life partly because ______.
A. mst families chse t g car - free
B. the cst f a new car was t much
C. he was hurt in a terrible car accident

31. What did the authr suggest his daughters d abut their friends' pinin?
A. Leave it alne.B. Take their advice.C. Think it ver.D. Argue against it.
32. What cnclusin did the authr draw after the eight - mnth car - free life?
A. Life withut a car is a bit hard.
B. It is strange t live withut a car.
C. His life gets better withut a car.

Cheerleading Is a Sprt
A sprt, accrding t the Assciatin f Cheerleading Caches and Advisrs, is a "physical activity against anther team, gverned by rules under which a winner is declared, and the primary purpse f the cmpetitin is a cmparisn f the relative skills f the participants." Because cheerleading fllws these guidelines, it is a sprt.
Cheerleading includes lts f physical activity. Like gymnasts, cheerleaders must learn t d a lt f mvements, such as jumping, twisting and s n. It is nt rare t see cheerleaders "flying" high up int the sky and falling t be caught by the "bases" in different psitins that require strength and cperatin.
Just as basketball and ftball have rules fr cmpetitive play, s des cheerleading. The perfrmance has t be cmpleted in less than three minutes and 15 secnds and the cheerleaders are required t stay within a certain area.
A cheerleader's gal is t be the best. Just like gymnasts, they are awarded pints fr difficulty, technique, and creativity. Cheerleading is a team sprt, s the perfrmance is als awarded accrding t the cperatin and synchrnizatin. That is t say, the girls need t act like ne persn. Otherwise, first place is ut f reach.
Accrding t the Natinal Center fr Catastrphic Sprt Injury Research, cheerleading is the number ne cause f serius sprts injuries t wmen, which is partly because they d nt wear prtective equipment. Hwever, the main reasn is that cheerleading is nt yet recgnized as a sprt by many schls, the prper equipment is nt prvided t ensure safety. Instead, the girls use whatever space is available. Mre recgnitin f cheerleading as a sprt wuld decrease the number f injuries.
S why d many Americans think cheerleading is nt a sprt? It cannt be because cheerleaders d nt use balls r ther bjects. Wrestling, swimming, track, skating and bxing are recgnized sprts that d nt use balls.
Hpefully, cheerleading will becme as well - knwn a sprt as ftball and basketball, and even appear in the Olympics since cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as thse invlved in the mre accepted sprts.
33. What is NOT the standard fr sprt accrding t the Assciatin f Cheerleading Caches and Advisrs?
A. Physical mvement is required.
B. The number f participants is limited.
C. The aim f a sprt is t beat anther team.
D. A winner is finally decided after the cmpetitin.
34. The underlined wrd “synchrnizatin” in Paragraph 5 prbably means ______.
A. being creative in designing the mvementsB. presenting a challenging perfrmance
C. ding the mvement at the same timeD. setting a practical cmpetitive gal
35. Which is the main reasn fr mre injuries t wmen in cheerleading accrding t the authr?
A. Physical activities.B. Strng cmpetitin.C. Carelessness.D. Less recgnitin.
36. What is the purpse f the authr t write the passage?
A. T intrduce the sprt f cheerleading.
B. T discuss the standards f cheerleading.
C. T invite peple t take part in cheerleading.
D. T suggest imprving cheerleading equipment.

Teens wh have gd, supprtive relatinships with their teachers enjy better health as adults, accrding t a research.
"This research suggests that imprving students' relatinships with teachers culd have imprtant, psitive and lng - lasting effects beynd just academic success," said Jinh Kim, the authr f the study. "It culd als bring abut imprtant health benefits in the lng run."
Previus research has suggested that teens' scial relatinships might be linked t health utcmes in adulthd — perhaps because pr relatinships can lead t chrnic stress which can raise a persn's risk f health prblems ver the lifespan, accrding t Kim. Hwever, it is nt clear whether the link between teen relatinships and lifetime health is certainly cause and effect — it culd be that ther factrs, such as different family backgrunds, might cntribute t bth relatinship prblems in adlescence and pr health in adulthd. Als, mst research has fcused n teens relatinships with their peers, rather than n their relatinships with teachers.
T explre thse questins further, Kim analyzed data n nearly 20,000 participants frm the Add Health study, a natinal study that fllwed participants fr 13 years, frm seventh grade int early adulthd. The participants included mre than 3,400 pairs f brthers and sisters. As teens, participants answered questins, like "Hw ften have yu had truble getting alng with ther students?" "Hw much d yu agree that friends care abut yu?" "Hw ften have yu had truble getting alng with yur teachers?" and "Hw much d yu agree that teachers care abut yu?" As adults, participants were asked abut their physical and mental health. Researchers als tk measures f physical health, such as bld pressure and BMI.
Kim fund that, as expected, participants wh had reprted better relatinships with bth their peers and teachers in middle schl and high schl als reprted better physical and mental health in their mid-20s. Hwever, when he cntrlled fr family backgrund by lking at pairs f brthers and sisters, nly the link between gd teacher relatinships and adult health remained significant.
The results suggest that teacher relatinships are even mre imprtant than previusly realized and that schls shuld invest in training teachers n hw t build warm and supprtive relatinships with their students, accrding t Kim.
37. Accrding t paragraph 3, we can knw that ______.
A. teen relatinships with teachers were nt studied befre
B. family backgrund is the main factr in imprving mental health
C. teen relatinship is nt the nly factr that affects the lifetime health
D. relatinship prblems in adlescence can cause pr health in adulthd
38. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. Hw the research was dne.B. What questins were explred.
C. Hw physical health was measured.D. What kind f participants were studied.
39. Which des Kim's research shw?
A. Gd adult health depends n teens' gd teachers.
B. Gd family backgrund prmises lng - term adult health.
C. Healthy peer relatinships leads t students' academic success.
D. Psitive student - teacher relatinship helps students' adult success
40. Where des this text prbably cme frm?
A. A family survey.B. A persnal blg.C. A term paper.D. A health magazine.

Much f the wrk in tday's wrld is accmplished in teams. Mst peple
believe the best way t build a great team is t gather a grup f the mst talented
individuals. 41 Cmpanies spend millins hiring tp business peple. Is
their mney well spent?
42 They fcused n ftball, basketball and baseball. The results are
mixed. Fr ftball and basketball, adding talented players t a team prves a gd
methd, but nly up t the pint where 70% f the players are tp talent; abve that
level, the team's perfrmance begins t decline. Interestingly, this trend isn't evident
in baseball, where additinal individual talent keeps imprving the team's
perfrmance.
T explain this phenmenn, the researchers explred the degree t which a
gd perfrmance by a team requires its members t crdinate their actins.
43 In baseball, the perfrmance f individual players is less dependent n
teammates. They cnclude that when task interdependence is high, team
perfrmance will suffer when there is t much talent, while individual talent will
have psitive effects n team perfrmance when task interdependence is lwer. If a
basketball star is, fr example, trying t gain a high persnal pint ttal, he may take
a sht himself when it wuld be better t pass the ball t a teammate, affecting the
team's perfrmance. Yung children learning t play team sprts are ften tld,
"There is n I in TEAM." ______.
Anther pssibility is that when there is a lt f talent n a team, sme players may make less effrt. Just as in a game f tug - f - war (拔河比赛), whenever a persn is added, everyne else pulls the rpe with less frce.
____45____ An A - team may require a balance—nt just A players, but a few generus B players as well.
A. It's nt a simple matter t determine the nature f talent.
B. Sprts team wners spend millins f dllars attracting tp talent.
C. The grup interactin and its effect drew the researchers' attentin.
D. Stars apparently d nt fllw this basic principle f sprtsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the rle f talent in the sprts wrld.
F. Building up a dream team is mre cmplex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball frm ftball and basketball.
