The cmmnly held belief that happiness fllws a U-shaped curve — with peaks at the beginning and end f life — might be incrrect accrding t a recent study dne by Fabian Kratz and Jsef Brüderl at the Ludwig Maximilian University f Munich in Germany.
Kratz says he was mtivated t revisit the claim “because the U-curve did nt reflect my persnal experiences with lder peple”. S the pair lked at self-reprted happiness statistics f 70,922 adults wh tk part in an annual survey in Germany between 1984 and 2017. They then mdelled hw happiness changed within each persn’s life.
Rather than frming a U-shaped curve, they fund that happiness generally declines slwly thrughut adulthd until peple’s late 50s, when it begins t rise upwards until 64, then drps dramatically.
One f the reasns Kratz believes previus studies have cme t incrrect cnclusins is that they versimplify the trajectry (轨迹) f happiness, partly by ignring deaths brught abut by ill health. “Yu get the impressin that after a certain age, happiness wuld increase nly because the unhappy peple are already dead,” says Kratz.
Others say the results raise new questins. “This study is remarkable in that it reveals what we’re really trying t knw in research,” says Philip Chen, a prfessr f scial ecnmics at the University f Maryland, “but further study shuld be dne t learn why happiness changes thrughut life and if the dramatic drp can be avided.”
What shuld be nted is that the pair didn’t cntrl fr factrs such as marriage and incme, which may influence happiness, and the study nly lked at ne cuntry. Despite all these, the findings culd have effects n plicy. “Previus schlars argued that we need psitive actin plicies t help individuals deal with their midlife crisis,” says Kratz. “but ur results suggest that the mst urgent issue is t address happiness decline in ld age.”
8. Hw did Kratz and Brüderl carry ut the study?
A. By ding bservatin.B. By analyzing data.
C. By cnducting surveys.D. By applying theries.

C. In his early 60s.D. In his late 70s.
10. What is Philip Chen’s attitude twards the new study?
A. Highly critical.B. Firmly ppsed.
C. Deeply dubtful.D. Cautiusly favrable.
11. What can be inferred abut the study frm the last paragraph?
A. It cntrlled fr factrs prperly.B. It fcuses n slving midlife crisis.

Mre than 60 years ag, Rsie the Rbt made her TV debut (首次亮相) in The Jetsns, buzzing frm rm t rm cmpleting husewrk. Nw, as scientists wrk t develp mdern-day Rsies, ne rdinary task is prving t be a big prblem: flding laundry.
While it seems rdinary t pick up a T-shirt and fld it int a neat square, it requires a surprisingly cmplex understanding f hw bjects mve in three dimensins. With a learned understanding f hw different fabrics (布料) will respnd when flded, humans can accmplish such tasks with ease. But fr rbts, if new situatins differ frm their training, they will have difficulty applying what they learn. As a result, current rbts are slw and ften perfrm prly n even the simplest f flding tasks.
Many rbtic systems use a flding strategy called “pick and place”. The rbt uses cmputer visin technlgy t identify a specific pint n a shirt (like the left sleeve), then pick up that pint and place it dwn at a different pint (perhaps the right sleeve). The rigin, destinatin and trajectry f the mvement is pre-determined. Any unexpected change will result in an incrrect fld. Measured by a metric (度规) called IU (1 is perfect), this strategy nly scred 0. 41 in a 2024 study.
New technlgies aim t make rbts better at reacting t real-time changes during a flding task. One f these appraches is called AdaFld. Unlike pick and place, AdaFld can change its plan in the middle f a fld. When flding, the mdel repeatedly mnitrs the fabric t measure prgress, s that it can adapt t changes and adjust when necessary t ensure the mst verlap (重叠). In the same 2024 study, AdaFld scred an IU f 0. 83.
AdaFld shws dynamic, adaptable respnse. It culd help researchers design smarter rbts that respnd flexibly t the ever-changing human wrld. Hpefully in the near future, rbts will free us frm husewrk like flding laundry.
12. Why des the authr mentin Rsie the Rbt at the beginning?
A. T explain a cncept.B. T lead in the tpic.
C. T intrduce a prduct.D. T prmte the TV series.
13. What writing technique is mainly used in Paragraph 2?
A. Giving examples.B. Raising a questin.
C. Using repetitin.D. Making a cntrast.
14. Hw des AdaFld differ frm “pick and place” in flding clthes?
A. It plans all steps befre mving.B. It wrks faster n heavy fabrics.
C. It uses simpler visin technlgy.D. It adjusts its actins during flding.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Rsie the Rbt: a target fr criticism.
B. Hme rbts: an assistant fr research.
C. Flding laundry: a challenge fr rbts.
D. AdaFld: an apprach t training rbts.

“Can we hst a family reunin dinner n New Year’s Eve?” my eleven-year-ld daughter asked eagerly. I wanted t respnd, “N.” I really hated cking, cleaning, and anything related t hsting a dinner fr twenty peple. In my pinin, ging ver t my sister’s huse sunded much mre appealing.

Over the next week, I made a lng list f all the reasns why ging t Auntie’s huse fr Spring Festival wuld be far superir t hsting at ur wn huse.
Returning hme ne evening, I fund a carefully designed task list f “New Year’s Eve Prject” psted n the refrigeratr. In the kitchen, my daughter was srting thrugh New Year decratins she had rdered nline.

It is this very act f “building tgether” that gives “hme” its unique sense f clseness during these special times.
