Naturalist Enz Suma, wh is nw 40, lives in Puglia, a regin in suthern Italy whse lng castline faces the Adriatic Sea. Flating waste accumulates in this relatively enclsed part f the Mediterranean, unlike the pen cean, where the waste tends t be spread ver a vast area. Feeling cncerned abut that, Suma makes it a habit t pick up the washed-up waste alng the shre, especially after big winter strms.
One day, Suma was walking alng the beach near his hme when he discvered a bttle f Cke. Suma nticed n the bttle that the price, clearly printed n the bttm, was in lire, a currency that hadn’t been used in Italy since it was replaced by the eur in 2002. Culd a plastic cntainer have well survived in the Mediterranean, he wndered, fr abut tw decades?
That led t him funding the Archeplastica museum. It has a cllectin f abut 500 unique pieces recvered frm Italian shres and the Cke bttle is the first ne f them. All cllectin demnstrates the unsettling life frce f plastic waste in the envirnment. “Seeing that a prduct peple may have used 30, 40, r 50 years ag remains still unchanged, yu’ll feel different. It’s a great shck,” Suma said t a reprter. S Suma ften exhibits selected pieces frm the Archeplastica cllectin at lcal schls arund his hmetwn f Ostuni.
“The playful side f the wrk allws yu t arrive at the less beautiful side f things,”
Suma acknwledged. “Plastic is a kind f useful substance. But it’s unthinkable that a water bttle, made frm a material designed t last s lng, can be used fr just a few days—r even minutes—befre becming garbage. Clean the beaches. Clean the ceans. Recycle. But if we are still thrwing ut plastics, nne f thse are ging t be lng-term slutins.”

In tday’s mtivatinal literature, failure is ften viewed as smething t be celebrated. Inspiratinal speakers are fnd f quting the wrds f the nvelist Samuel Beckett-“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappintments are an essential stepping stne t success, a turning pint in ur life stry that will ultimately end in victry.
Hwever, psychlgical researches find mst f us struggle t handle failure cnstructively. In ther wrds, we fail t “fail frward”. We find ways t devalue the task at which we failed, and becme less mtivated t persevere and reach ur gals. This phenmenn is knwn as the “sur-grape effect”, which was discvered by Prfessr Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sur-grape effect” is a self-prtective mechanism. “Mst f us picture urselves as cmpetent peple, s when external feedback suggests therwise, it pses a serius threat t that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way ut is t deny r explain away the external signal, s we can reduce the incnsistency and preserve a psitive sense f self. We d this even withut nticing.”
If yu have ne bad interview fr yur dream jb, yu might cnvince yurself that yu dn’t really want it at all, and stp applying fr similar psitins. The same ges if yu fail t impress at a sprts trial, r if a publisher rejects the first submissin f yur manuscript. “We tend t explain away ur shrtcmings and cnvince urselves ur ‘Plan C’ is actually ur ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It desn’t mean we shuld persevere in gals all the time. It can be healthy t change ambitins if the prcess is n lnger making us happy. But the “sur-grape effect may lead us t cme t this decisin prematurely, rather than hanging n a little and seeing whether we might learn and imprve.
Failures are unavidable. By learning t face the disappintment instead f devaluing its imprtance and pretending nthing happened, yu may find it easier t achieve yur gals.

A study led by Markus Paulus, prfessr at Lyla Marymunt University, shws that the ability has its rts in earliest childhd. “It’s generally assumed that children’s ability t imitate is inbrn, but accrding t ur bservatin, children imitate because they themselves are imitated by caregivers. This interactin enables a cultural transfer f knwledge, which, thrugh generatins’ effrts, cnsequently leads t the develpment f human beings,” says Markus Paulus.
In this research, Paulus recrded the interactin between mther and child ver several mnths. The babies came int the lab fr the first time at the age f 6 mnths, while their final visit was when they were 18 mnths ld. As they engaged in varius play situatins, the interactins and imitatins f mther and child were analyzed. The lngterm study shwed that the mre sensitive a mther was in her interactins with her sixmnthld child and the mre ften she imitated the baby, the greater the child's verall ability was at the age f 18 mnths.
Paulus’ research shws that mutual imitatin is the keystne f knwledge transfer, thrugh which children successfully learn varius skills, such as hw t use bjects, waving and acquisitin f language. “This interactin is the nucleus f learning and, finally, gives rise t evlutinary success f human,” says Paulus.
“Cultural learning is an essential part f human evlutin, and it is rted in the imitatin f thers, particularly ur caregivers during ur earliest childhd,” says Paulus. “Thrugh this, we learn frm each ther and pass n knwledge t the next generatin, s certain actins r techniques d nt have t be cnstantly invented again.”
32. Why des the authr mentin the example f wheels?
A. T praise the inventin f car wheels.
B. T describe the prcess f trial and errr.
C. T emphasize the necessity f new tls.
D. T shw the imprtance f prir knwledge.
33. What can we learn abut Paulus’ research?
A. Children’s imitatin was recrded by mthers.
B. Sensitive mthers encuraged children’s imitatin.
C. Children’s ability was analyzed thrugh interactin.
D. Effective interactin prmted children’s develpment.
34. What des the underlined wrd “nucleus” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Cre. B. Result. C. Aim. D. Cntent.
35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
