As a child I read bks with great interest until I went t sleep. When my GCSEs came arund, I revised fr hurs withut pause (暂停). But in recent years, I’ve fund that I prefer scrlling (滑动) n my phne t reading fr pleasure.
S, abut a year ag, I made a prmise: every time I came acrss a wrd I didn’t knw — in a nvel, an article r a cnversatin — I wuld lk it up and write it dwn. I wuldn’t use any pen r ntebk, just t keep a running list n my phne. Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back t try t keep the wrds in mind.
The list nw expands almst 20 pages. Each time I lk up and recrd a wrd, I feel a slight change, as thugh sme neglected (忽视的) part f my brain is wrking again. There is als an imprtant element t it — it functins as smething f a diary, a recrd f what I’ve been reading and thinking abut, and wh I’ve been listening t.
It’s nt an easy habit t keep up. If I’m reading n the undergrund, I have t stp mid-paragraph, pull ut my phne and type the new wrd I cme acrss int my digital dc. And then there’s the revising which I ften frget t d, dutifully scrlling thrugh my grwing wrds list, as if I were preparing fr a vcabulary test.
Still, it’s made my mind much sharper. I find myself reaching less ften fr the same tiring handful f adjectives, and mre ften fr smething clear and exact. Few things are mre satisfying than finding the exact wrd yu were searching fr. This small habit renewed my lve f reading. In an era when ur devices attract ur attentin, it is imprtant t use my brain as a tl fr slw thinking. And it has given me back smething I feared I’d lst — the pleasure f exercising a mind that, after years f scrlling n my phne, is finally waking up again.

Many peple in America believe that “mre is better”. Cllege students ften share this idea when they use laptps in class. Laptps d allw students t d mre, such as getting engaged in nline activities, and accessing infrmatin frm the Internet. In fact, students wh use laptps ften take many mre ntes than thse wh write by hand. Mrever, when students take ntes using laptps, they tend t take ntes verbatim, writing dwn every wrd the teacher says. Obviusly, they believe that it is advantageus t take mre cmplete ntes that are useful fr later review.
Hwever, research by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer shws a surprising result. Acrss the experiments, Mueller and Oppenheimer had students take ntes in a classrm setting and then tested students n their memry fr factual detail, their cnceptual (概念的) understanding f the material, and their ability t generalize the infrmatin. Half f the students were instructed t take ntes with a laptp, and the ther half were instructed t write the ntes ut by hand. In each study, hwever, thse wh wrte ut their ntes by hand had a strnger cnceptual understanding and were mre successful in applying the material than thse wh tk ntes with their laptps.
What drives this unexpected finding? Writing by hand is slwer and frces students t listen carefully. They must think abut what is imprtant and then summarize the infrmatin in their wn wrds. This prcess makes the brain wrk harder and helps them understand and remember better. On the ther hand, typing n a laptp is s fast that many students write everything dwn withut thinking deeply abut the lecture. This type f nte-taking des nt help them learn well.
The research by Mueller and Oppenheimer serves as a reminder, hwever, that even when technlgy allws us t d mre in less time, it des nt always fster (促进) learning. Even thugh laptps let students recrd a lt f infrmatin quickly, deep learning happens when the brain must wrk t chse and summarize key ideas.
28.What des the underlined wrd “verbatim” in the first paragraph mean?
      A.Exactly as spken.B.Perfectly as tld.
      C.Creatively as expected.D.Regularly as they d.
29.What d Mueller and Oppenheimer find in their research?
A.Students wh take ntes with a laptp learn mre.
B.Mre cmplete ntes are very useful fr later review.
C.Cllege teachers increasingly turn t technlgy in class.
D.Students wh write ut their ntes n paper utperfrm the rest.
30.What is the main purpse f the third paragraph?
      A.T prvide a detailed explanatin.B.T make a predictin.
C.T challenge a cmmn viewpint.D.T summarize the main argument.
31.What shuld students d when it cmes t learning accrding t the text?
A.Use mre brain pwer instead f technlgy.
B.Have a memry test shrtly after each lessn.
C.Summarize key ideas after recrding lectures.
      D.Fcus n memrizing infrmatin thrughly.
      D
Jey and Katie Mims might be the middle-class mdel. They are raising a sn and they fund a hme in the city they lve: Lincln, Nebraska.
Jbs and hmes are tw areas that have recently presented Lincln and ther cities with an unusual prblem. Lincln is at the tp f a list measuring labr market tightness (劳动力市场紧张程度). In cities like Prv, Utah, and Lexingtn, Kentucky, the number f jb penings is mre than duble the number f unemplyed (失业的) persns. In Lincln, it’s nearly fur-t-ne.
“We’re a largely rural (农村的) state, s as peple g t cllege and mve ut f thse cmmunities, they aren’t cming back in. And s, we have a lt f peple mving ut f ur state and we’re trying t find ways t bring peple int ur state,” Jey Mims said.

Lincln, like many mid-sized cities, desn’t have enugh affrdable husing t supprt the middle-class emplyees they’d like t attract. “In ur area, anything that ges up fr sale is either bught by sme cmpanies and turned int a rental r is upgraded and sld fr twice what a family just starting ut can affrd,” Katie said.
Dr. Rger Tutterw, an ecnmics prfessr at Kennesaw State University in Gergia, said times are hard fr a lt f peple right nw. “If yu’re in a tight labr market and a tight husing market, it’s a difficult situatin because yu may lk at a city where there’s a great emplyment chance, but if yu can’t find the husing that’s suitable in terms f affrdability r lcatin (位置), then that may discurage yu frm mving here,” he said.
Jey and Katie had jbs. But in the Lincln market, they culdn’t find a hme befre receiving help frm Neighbr Wrks. “Our stry isn’t unique, but it means s much t us that I want ther peple t have the same experience,” Jey said.
What prblem des the state f Nebraska face?
A fall in the labr market. B. The waste f rural husing.
      C. The lss f educated peple. D. An increase in unemplyment.

      D. Why peple rush t sell their huses in Lincln.
      34. What did Dr. Rger Tutterw mean by his wrds?
      A. Huses and jbs are clsely related.
      B. There are traps in the husing market.
      C. Mre jb pprtunities are created in Gergia.
      D. Peple think a lt abut the lcatin f their huses.
      35. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. The middle class is lucky in Lincln
      B. The middle class takes jbs seriusly
      C. The middle class faces a shrtage f husing
      D. The middle class fights fr the equality t husing
