It’s unusual t read nvels abut wmen taking an active rle in the resistance during Wrld War II, especially thse f Dutch wmen, wh were expected t keep the hme fires burning and let the men get n with the fighting. S, I was fascinated when discvering many Dutch female fighters wh risked their lives fr their cuntry in wartime.
My bk, The Girl with the Red Hair, is based n the true stry f Hannie Schaft, the mst famus f thse brave wmen. T the Dutch, Hannie was an icn f resistance during Wrld War II, and arund the cuntry there are schls and streets named after her.
At the start f the war, Hannie was a law student at the University f Amsterdam, but her studies were disrupted by the German ccupatin f the Netherlands. On May 14th, 1940, a German bmbing raid almst destryed Rtterdam, frcing thusands t flee the burning city. As the Nazis began targeting Jews, Hannie decided t act. Whether it was sheltering Jews r transprting tp-secret infrmatin in her saddlebags, setting fire t military facilities r shting Nazi fficers, the breathtaking curage she demnstrated was unmatched. Hannie was prepared t take n any assignment in her quest fr justice.
Hannie’s stry ends tragically. It was Hannie’s great misfrtune t be arrested nly weeks befre the end f the war. Thugh this black-haired girl refused t talk under questining, her red hair rts gave her identity away. One cld spring mrning, Hannie was taken frm her cell and marched t a pint, where ne f the Nazi sldiers tk aim. But his first sht nly grazed her ear. She said, “Idit! I sht better than yu.” The secnd bullet tk her life.
It has been a humbling experience writing this bk abut Hannie Schaft. Althugh my bk is a wrk f fictin, I hpe I’ve dne justice t this incredible and inspiring wman. Cme and discver mre abut my new nvel, the secnd in The Dutch Girl series, called The Girl with the Red Hair.
      24. What d we knw abut the Dutch wmen frm the first paragraph?

      C. Hannie’s curageus resistance activities.
      D. Destructin caused by the German bmbing.
      26. What d the underlined wrds “nly grazed” in paragraph 4 mean?

Dutch scientists have managed t engineer an air-pwered sft-bdied rbt. The key t unlcking the rbt's self-sustaining mvement, despite the absence f a cmputerized cntrl unit, lies in the strategic integratin f aerdynamic principles, whse rle is t regulate the airflw dynamics essential fr its walking and swimming actins.
Hw this rbt wrks bears a striking similarity t that f "tube dancers", thse tall thin fabric tubes that have air pumped int them. When air fills the tube t the maximum, it makes it stand upright. Hwever, nce the tube reaches an upright psitin, the internal air pressure gradually decreases, causing the tube t bend dwnward. This bending then makes the pressure rise again, pushing the bent sectin frward. This prcess repeats cntinuusly, frming a cyclic mtin that gives the rbt its mving frce.
This pressure-driven cntinuus bending alng tubes precisely fuels the rbt. Linked t a single air surce, its multiple tubes initially mve chatically in different directins but sn adjust their mtin, eventually mving in a cnsistent and harmnized way just like "legs", with speed regulated by air pressure.
One particularly ntable characteristic f the rbt is its remarkable speed. It can cver a distance 30 times its wn bdy length within a single secnd, which is just like Usain Blt, the wrld's fastest runner, achieving his speed by finishing 100m in merely 1.71 secnds. Anther utstanding feature is that it adjusts autmatically t its cnditins. It can easily crss uneven grund and when it accidentally kncks int a wall, it turns. If the rbt sinks int water, it will immediately adjust its mvement pattern and start swimming.
Withut a cntrl cre, the new inventin is mre like a simple machine than an advanced rbt needing difficult prgramming. Nevertheless, it can d many cmplex tasks independently. It is widely anticipated that the technlgy culd ne day be used in applicatins such as micr-rbts that deliver medicine within the bdy, r machinery designed fr use in harsh envirnments where electrnics may fail, such as uter space.
28.What happens t "the tube dancer" when its internal air pressure peaks?
A.It leaks. B. It bends dwnward.
      C. It straightens. D. It mves back and frth.
29.What aspect d Paragraph 2 and 3 fcus n abut the new rbt?
      A.Its pwer surce. B. Its multi-functins.
      C. Its structural features. D. Its peratinal mechanism.
30.Why des the authr mentin Usain Blt in Paragraph 4?
      A.T shwcase his running speed.
      B. T test the rbt's perfrmance.
      C. T stress humans can't utpace the rbt.
      D. T help readers grasp the rbt's speed.
      31. What can we infer abut the new inventin frm the last paragraph?
A.It has a bright prspect. B. It relies heavily n prgramming.
C.It'll lwer disease ccurrences.D. It has been put int mass prductin.
      D
The specific cultural values f a cuntry may determine whether cncern abut envirnmental issues actually leads individuals t engage in envirnmentally friendly behavirs, accrding t the new research published in Psychlgical Science.
Kimin Em, a psychlgical scientist at the University f Califrnia, was inspired t investigate the links between culture, envirnmental cncern, and envirnmental actin after nticing that bth public discussin and prir academic research n envirnmental behavir typically fcused n peple frm western cuntries. This is ntewrthy because western scieties tend t have cultural values that priritize individuals’ wn attitudes and beliefs and encurage expressin f them.
“The thery seemed t be that nce individuals are led t believe in the urgency f envirnmental issues and have strnger cncerns abut sustainability, they will change and act t address the issues,” explains Em. But this relatinship might nt hld fr individuals living in mre cllectivistic scieties, which place mre emphasis n scial harmny and unifrmity than n self-expressin.
T examine what drives envirnmental actin in bth cultures, Em’s team cnducted a study with participants frm the United States (an individualistic culture) and Thailand (a cllectivistic culture). They fund envirnmental cncern was crrelated with envirnmental behavir — in this case, chsing envirnmentally friendly prducts — but nly amng American participants. On the ther hand, believing that a large percentage f peple engage in envirnmentally friendly behavirs was assciated with making ec-friendly chices amng Thai participants, but nt American participants.
The findings reveal that persnal cncerns are mre likely t mtivate peple t take envirnmental actin if they live in individualistic cuntries, whereas scial criteria are mre likely t drive peple t engage in envirnmentally friendly behavir if they live in cllectivistic cuntries.
“Getting citizens actively engaged is critical t addressing urgent scial issues, such as climate change,” says Em. “Our research suggests that scientists, plicymakers, and activists need t understand hw culture shapes the psychlgical factrs f actin t develp plicies, campaigns, and interventins that address imprtant scial issues.”
      32. Hw des Em view previus research n envirnmental behavir?
      A. It priritizes diverse cultural values. B. It relies n theretical assumptins.
      C. It targets a narrw grup f subjects. D. It underestimates persnal views.
      33. A Thai man is mst likely t act in ec-friendly ways if ______.
      A. he witnesses many thers d s B. he investigates cllectivistic values
      C. he feels a strng persnal urgency D. he mves t an individualistic cuntry
      34. What is the last paragraph mainly abut cncerning Em’s research?
      A. Its challenges. B. Its backgrund.
      C. Its researchers. D. Its significance.
      35. Which statement is best supprted by the new research?
      A. Envirnmental issues are culture-rted.
      B. Scial standards help cntrl pllutin.
      C. Cultural values guide green behavirs.
      D. Mre cncerns lead t mre actin.
