One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, sme special pictures caught my eye and tuched me deeply. Therefre, I said t my seven-year-ld twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-ld Meghan, “We have s much, but these pr peple nw hardly have anything. Let’s d smething fr them. Well share what we have with them.” Then I tk ut a large bx and filled it with large quantities f fds and als sme clthes that we might nt wear any lnger. While I was ding this, I encuraged the bys t chse their tys and dnate sme f their less favrite things.
Meghan watched quietly as the bys tk ut their ld tys and games and put them tgether. Then she walked away. A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy, the dll she cherished mst, wh kept her cmpany every night when she was sleeping. When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents (口音), mst f them prudly replied. “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind f respnse makes me fail t understand the true meaning f accents.
Usually, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this explanatin f accents is narrw and culd give rise t misunderstanding. Funnily enugh, as far as the language study is cncerned, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that shape ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s meaningless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect (方言), t. In the field f language study, a dialect refers t a language that is characterized by its changes f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr example, “Yu gt eat r nt?” (meaning “Have yu eaten?”) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw explanatin f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne. Language differences like these prvide deep understandings int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is clearly a part f wh he is. Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.

10. Hw des the authr develp his idea in Paragraph 3?

C. Listing figures.D. Explaining causes.

A chicken breast gives abut 60 grams, a can f tuna gives abut 22 grams, a 170-gram tub f Greek ygurt gives abut 17 grams, and tw eggs give abut 12 grams. Chicken ften gives mre than 30 grams f prtein per dllar.

In cmparisn, many prtein bars give nly 6-8 grams per dllar.
Bttm line: d nt rely n clrs and slgans. Read the nutritin (营养) label and chse a variety f fresh, minimally prcessed fds t get enugh prtein and micrnutrients withut verspending.
